Help tonight please. Domestic flight ID from Gatwick

Looking for advice from anyone who flies regularly within the UK with Easyjet from Gatwick please.

Do they EVER ask for ID for domestic flights?

Husband and son (14) flew from a UK airport to Gatwick this morning. Never needed ID (as far as any of us recall, we never show ID for any of the domestic flights we take), but realised when he got to London that he'd left his driving licence at home.

He literally went with his phone, his bank card in the phone case and a change of clothes.

The event they were attending was in Nottingham, and they took the train up there from London. They are staying in Nottingham tonight.

Their flight home is from Gatwick tomorrow and he needs to decide whether to risk it, or whether to take the train home north from Nottingham. Journey would be between 7 and 10 hours.

If they did decide to risk it, my son would get on the flight and my husband would have to get the train home all the way from London.

EasyJet terms and conditions state that ID is required, but has anyone ever been asked for it?

I'm going to take photos of his driving licence and passport and send them to him in any case, but not sure whether that would even be accepted.

They are not checking in any bags, if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

If for some reason they don’t get on the flight they’ll only need train tickets from Gatwick to Nottingham won’t they?

Bet he won’t make this mistake again any time soon! Good luck Mr MacKechnie!

HAHAHA. I could tell you of a dozen similar scenarios. None of which have happened when we've been travelling together 😁😁. It'll be an adventure for the pair of them 😁.

I fly between inverness and Gatwick regularly and have never ever been asked for ID. Was told once that they only ask if checking baggage.

KnottyKnitting · 05/03/2023 22:42

We have flown domestic to Glasgow AND Edinburgh quite a few times from Gatwick, Stansted and Luton and have never been asked for ID .

goodsea · 06/03/2023 09:03

What happened in the end. Did they make the flight?

Gatwick to Aberdeen would normally be via the east coast mainline which doesn't go to Nottingham so if they have to go back to Nottingham to use the onward tickets they're adding even more time onto the journey.

tribpot · 06/03/2023 10:06

Yes, you definitely wouldn't go from Gatwick to Aberdeen via Nottingham! Although you could potentially use part of the ticket as Nottingham - Aberdeen gets over to the East Cost mainline fairly quickly (you need to get over to Newark).

I hope they make it back ok OP, but whenever I’ve got to the boarding gate for a domestic flight they’ve asked for my ID. I’m so anxious for them it’s ridiculous!

tribpot · 06/03/2023 12:07

Agreed @Clusterfunk I'm waiting for the text sent from Mr Mackechnie whilst actually seated on the plane - nothing else will do!

SpeedyMackechnie · 06/03/2023 12:40

He was under strict instructions to let me know when they actually got on the plane. Given that the message I sent to him at 12.33 is undelivered, I hope it means they are on the flight, with their phones on flight mode!! Looks like the flight departed at 12.09.

Maybe too much of a stress to have updated me😁

It sounds like they must be on the flight, as they'd be able to update you otherwise. However, now we are on tenterhooks waiting for the text to say they've landed in Aberdeen.

NorthernSpirit · 06/03/2023 12:55

I flew EasyJet from Gatwick to Edinburgh last week (and Edinburgh to Gatwick return) I wasn’t asked to show any ID at either airport.

SpeedyMackechnie · 06/03/2023 13:44

Brief message from my son 'couldn't answer because I was in the plane'.

Right, we can all get on with our lives now 🤣. Thanks for keeping me company on this scintillating journey 😁.

And thanks to all those who gave them the confidence to wing it (pun kind of intended...)

I’ve never been asked to show ID - I just wave the boarding pass on my phone at various machines

tribpot · 06/03/2023 13:57

Hurrah! Glad they made it.

Barold · 06/03/2023 13:57

Too late for the OP but for anyone else who lands here with the same question - I used to fly between City and Glasgow all the time and never got asked for ID.

SpeedyMackechnie · 06/03/2023 14:26

And...

They are IN THE HOUSE!!!

Tiredoftiers · 06/03/2023 14:32

Excellent, didn't think there would be an issue.

Would be good if Easyjet would clarify officially their position/ policy.

percypercypercy · 06/03/2023 14:47

Ah that's brilliant OP

EspeciallyDedicated · 06/03/2023 15:02

I did LGW to Edinburgh and back last month with another adult, neither of us were asked for id at either airport. No checked in bags and no larger cabin bags, just under the seat ones.

EspeciallyDedicated · 06/03/2023 15:02

Ah, missed the update, good news
