Help tonight please. Domestic flight ID from Gatwick

Looking for advice from anyone who flies regularly within the UK with Easyjet from Gatwick please.

Do they EVER ask for ID for domestic flights?

Husband and son (14) flew from a UK airport to Gatwick this morning. Never needed ID (as far as any of us recall, we never show ID for any of the domestic flights we take), but realised when he got to London that he'd left his driving licence at home.

He literally went with his phone, his bank card in the phone case and a change of clothes.

The event they were attending was in Nottingham, and they took the train up there from London. They are staying in Nottingham tonight.

Their flight home is from Gatwick tomorrow and he needs to decide whether to risk it, or whether to take the train home north from Nottingham. Journey would be between 7 and 10 hours.

If they did decide to risk it, my son would get on the flight and my husband would have to get the train home all the way from London.

EasyJet terms and conditions state that ID is required, but has anyone ever been asked for it?

I'm going to take photos of his driving licence and passport and send them to him in any case, but not sure whether that would even be accepted.

They are not checking in any bags, if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

Gatwick airport is no where near Nottingham, why on earth are they going so far south to fly to Aberdeen? That's madness and they have tickets for the train now so it would be ridiculous to travel back to Hatwick.

Cheapest way to do it

Ever domestic flight I've ever taken has requested id

generalexpert · 05/03/2023 21:23

I used to fly BA from Heathrow to Aberdeen every week for years. Never got asked for ID. I used to take my passport with me just in case.

I do however think that other airlines have different procedures.

I used to fly between London/Essex and Manchester a lot and other domestic flights at least 4 times a month. Think I showed ID once, maybe twice. Can they refund the train tickets? If not might as well use them, either way you won't get your flight money back

They could probably change the tickets on the same route for a different date, later in the year, and just pay for train tickets down when they do that trip.

Why wouldn't the son be able to fly?

EJ don't allow under 16s solo.

My kids have never been asked on EJ, one of them has no photo ID. I admit we worry about it and are going to get her a passport. We live somewhere that requires sea or air travel to go anywhere, the kids have never been asked, but we have.

Tiredoftiers · 05/03/2023 21:27

You used to get away with the card you used to buy your tickets with flying with ba and had to show id with easyJet, but based on recent experience easyJet weren’t looking for anything.

But they have train tickets. I mean it would be mad to travel roughly 3 hours in the opposite direction n the off chance they might get on the plane.

Just checked with husband. Half the prices to fly and train from London (isn't that ridiculous?) And also quicker.

@SpeedyMackechnie

I'm not judging the choice to fly to Gatwick I am saying under the new circumstances, - he doesn't have ID so no guarantee he will get on the plane and he now has train tickets, it would be silly to travel so far south

Never asked on BA and do it regularly
Never check baggage though

Has he got seat reservations on the LNER leg of the journey by train from Nottingham? I can see they're warning of limited seats left to book tmrw. It is as another poster pointed out only an hour longer to travel by train from Gatwick (once you've got back there from Nottingham, but they were planning to do that anyway). I still think I'd take a chance on the plane.

But if they don't get on the plane they then need to get all the way to Aberdeen and will need more train tickets

Thanks for all your helpful replies. My husband has taken a look at this thread and found it really useful.

Think they're going to wing it Shock

I've flown between Glasgow and Bristolwith EasyJet recently and wasn't asked for ID in either direction.

IrishSee · 05/03/2023 21:44

I fly regularly between Gatwick and the IoM on easyjet, I've only been asked for ID when travelling with checked bags. Can you tweet easyjet to ask them? They're usually pretty helpful when you contact them via twitter.

tribpot · 05/03/2023 21:44

Yep good point @percypercypercy , I was assuming the Nottingham tix could be refunded, otherwise this whole fiasco will turn out to be more expensive surely than just flying into Birmingham would have been!

Aberdeen Birmingham used to be affordable with FlyBe. Costs a fortune now (probably even more than the fiasco)Grin

Think problem would be that they would refer to their Ts & Cs. Which say you need ID

I think they'll be fine. I've never seem them ask for id on a domestic flight, they just scan your boarding pass at the gate.

gogohmm · 05/03/2023 21:52

Look at Aberdeen to Luton EasyJet, it's often really cheap

We tend to search Aberdeen to all London and have actually started taking most of our summer holiday flights out of London (with passports 😁) because it's SO much cheaper than flying from Scotland.

We fly to Scotland every couple of months (EJ, BA, Flybe) from Birmingham and Heathrow - never been asked for ID

Sunbird24 · 05/03/2023 22:04

If for some reason they don’t get on the flight they’ll only need train tickets from Gatwick to Nottingham won’t they?

Bet he won’t make this mistake again any time soon! Good luck Mr MacKechnie!

Probably not because unless they bought expensive 'anytime' tickets they will almost certainly miss the train they booked.
