Am going to visit my son who is at Uni thee. Staying in the city centre. We will have sat afternoon/eve and Sun until lunchtime together. Any recs for nice things to do or good places to eat? I'm coeliac which is a bit of a pain. Are the caves worth a visit?

Pop into the Cathedral just op the road from Browns. The original paintwork is being uncovered. Wollaton park is nice for a walk. Can't think of anything worse than a weekend in Nottingham though.

Nottingham is a lovely city with a great bar culture and independent shops and restaurants. The countryside around is also great

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2023 08:23

@Carriemac maybe I'm just jaded by living her for too long.

vjg13 · 18/02/2023 08:26

@Carriemac I agree, it's compact too and has a vibrant feel with all the students.

I love Nottingham and my DS is also a student there. Agree that the Justice museum is very interesting, we did a caves tour .. interesting but not sure it's still it open? The castle has been refurbished and may be worth a visit. Wollaton Park lovely for a half day out. Just walking along the canal is one of my favourite things to do and browsing round the city centre. So many nice coffee shops, restaurants and bars. There is a very good tourist information centre in the centre. We live in a very small, quiet town so a day out in a city is ridiculously exciting for me Smile.

Toddler lucky we are all different ... the town I live in is a well known 'tourist attraction' where people do visit for a weekend ... seems like the dullest place on earth to me Grin - give me Nottingham any day !!

I always enjoy a trip back to Nottingham. It can be a bit ‘edgy’ on weekend nights, but that’s just because everything is so compact, I think.

Eden Hall spa just outside Nottingham is nice if @shoes4life ever wants to combine a visit to ds with some pampering. - you could have a morning in the spa whilst he sleeps off his hangover!

If Cartwheel is still there, they make the best coffee ever.

Hockley area of town is great. My new fave for cocktails is Boca Lima - used to be boilermaker. Lovely relaxed atmosphere in there. Mesa, just down the road, is incredible for food. But you are spoiled in Hockley with Bar Iberico, Yamas, Mowgli, Bonsai. Maybe a drink in ye olde trip - the oldest pub in Britain. Not been for many years, but it's a tourist draw built into the caves.

Done the caves tour years ago, are they still open now the broadmarsh has been demolished? Brewhouse yard, museum of the houses built into the caves is right Nextdoor to the Trip, but I think that closed for refurbishment. The castle is definitely closed - it went bankrupt. Not doing very well on the attractions are we?

For running, don't know what your transport situation is, or how far you like to run, but the tram can take you to Nottingham uni campus, where you can reach woolaton park, or you can run out to colwick park on the east, which is a lovely flat run around a lake. Or there's plenty of lovely runs from the city centre along the river Trent. greatruns.com/location/nottingham-uk/.

I’ve spent many happy hours in the Angel. Is it still basically spit and sawdust?

not quite. has the aesthetics but a more polished version. still an alternative feel. food is nice - lots vegan options on menu

different crowd to the early 2000's

Sunshineboo · 18/02/2023 11:24

also annie's burger shack is a good place if burgers are your thing - they do vegan, veggie, chicken and beef versions of everything and make an effort to be inclusive with gf etc

ScreamALullabye · 18/02/2023 12:53

Yamas Greek restaurant is lovely!

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2023 13:24

The castle is closed. The company ruining it went bust. After spending a fortune on refurbishing it. Massive uproar about that!

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2023 13:24

Eden hall is lovely.

Ragwort · 19/02/2023 08:39

I hadn't heard about the Castle ... how disappointing after the huge financial investment Sad.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/02/2023 09:31

It wasn't that good anyway! The best thing about the castle was the grounds. And the view from the terrace. But at £13 a go. People were not going!
