Am going to visit my son who is at Uni thee. Staying in the city centre. We will have sat afternoon/eve and Sun until lunchtime together. Any recs for nice things to do or good places to eat? I'm coeliac which is a bit of a pain. Are the caves worth a visit?

I’m coeliac and always found it a good city for food. I’m there each month for a course so ie love tried a few places. There are a lot of chains but Browns (on Park Row) is nice and gf friendly.

shoes4life · 15/02/2023 17:57

Oh thanks will pop that on my list 👍🏻

I've been on the caves visit - it's fascinating - they are really extensive and that's only a small part of them. I'd definitely recommend it.

vjg13 · 15/02/2023 18:03

There is a lovely restaurant called "The world Service" I would highly recommend. The Browns suggested has recently been refurbished and is great, brilliant for breakfast.

I found the caves a bit dull. You do an audio tour and the people ahead of us were slow and behind us were too quick.

vjg13 · 15/02/2023 18:05

The contemporary art gallery is near the caves, free and good for a quick pop in.

TimeToFlyNow · 15/02/2023 18:08

We live in Nottingham and went to the national justice museum recently, it was quite interesting and you can also go on a tour of the caves . You can book online

Treecreature · 15/02/2023 18:12

Caves and galleries of justice well worth a visit.

EndofDaze · 15/02/2023 18:31

World Service is nice but £££. Lots of nice places to eat in the Hockley area of the city. Wollaton Hall is near the uni campus and has nice parkland around it as well as the hall itself. Also the boating lake at the uni is nice for an hour or two if the weather is fine.

Bobbybobbins · 15/02/2023 18:35

Contemporary art gallery is lovely. Some quite nice shops in Hockley. The ice centre is great if you like skating?! Wollaton hall grounds are gorgeous and near the uni.

shoes4life · 15/02/2023 18:41

Oh loads of replies - thanks so much! Will def look at the caves (my hotel has a bar down there apparently!) and will check our World service.
Think my son will be hungover when I get there, so might pop out for a run to look around. Any suggestions for where to head?

If he’s at uni of Nottingham the campus is lovely to run around with lots of open space. Again, Wollaton Park is great for a run too, or the embankment is worth a go.

Perfect, yes that's a good idea to go round the campus

Bromley House Library is great, but sorry, you can’t just pop in for a visit. You need to book a tour and these tend to be mid week.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/02/2023 19:03

Bar Iberico - order the beetroot if they still do it!

shoes4life · 16/02/2023 21:57

Thanks all, Bar Iberico sounds great and I love a curry house

You can't book ibeico so go slightly early and they'll give you a pager to let you k is when the table is ready , the angel nearby is a great real ale pub or hockey arts club for cocktails I also within range . Kayal is also in hockley. - amazing south Indian food and very near the broadway art house cinema

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/02/2023 19:26

I’ve spent many happy hours in the Angel. Is it still basically spit and sawdust?

Carriemac · 17/02/2023 21:13

It is . And a really mixed crowd and great beer

Happy days! 🤪

Pop into the Cathedral just op the road from Browns. The original paintwork is being uncovered. Wollaton park is nice for a walk. Can't think of anything worse than a weekend in Nottingham though.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2023 07:33

Are the caves actually still open? The broardmarsh has been demolished..

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2023 07:35

The hand and heart on derby Road and the Trip to Jerusalem have caves to sit in.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/02/2023 07:44

Oh yes to the Hand and Heart. Not been for probably a decade, but the food used to be nice.

Pinkmagic1 · 18/02/2023 07:45

For lunch I would recommend Coco Tang. It is a lovely, quirky cafe bar that does fantastic Vietnamese food and amazing cocktails. If you go upstairs, there is a lovely roof garden.

The National Justice Museum/Galleries of Justice, as others have is very interesting and entertaining, with costumed actors. The caves are good, but the actual part you visit is really quite small. You can buy a joint ticket with the Justice Museum though.
