London where to stay between central London and Walthamstow?

Hi

We are a family of 5. 2 adults and 3 kids aged 6 11 and 13.

We will be travelling into London Kings Cross station via train on 11th Feb to attend a family event. After this we are hoping to stay on and explore the touristy bits of London until the 15th. We are also looking to visit a couple of the main museums and my DP wants to have a walk around Harrods.

I need to find a hotel/premier inn/travelodge which will be central so that I can easily get to all the places I want to go to. Preferably somewhere close to an underground station. My maximum budget is £800.

All suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you!

There’s a premier inn right next to Tottenham Hale station which is between Walthamstow and Kings Cross. You’ll be on the Victoria Line so very easy and quick to travel about.

Is the family event in Walthamstow? I'd just stay in central London, somewhere near Kings X would be good but you could also base yourself near Victoria/Westminster for easy access to museums etc. It's only 15 mins on the tube from Kings Cross to Walthamstow so no need to base yourself near there at all unless you absolutely have to, it'll just make the rest of your trip more of a pain.

popcornsong · 04/01/2023 13:35

Absolutely nothing at Tottenham Hale though - no restaurants, shops nothing. The Ibis at Stratford might work, shops, market, cafes, restaurants here if you need them. Or stay near Kings Cross as you are arriving here, there's a Premier Inn on York Way.

orangelotus · 04/01/2023 13:39

or Stratford? so easy to get everywhere from there?
Harrods is a long way from Walthamstow but hotels over that side of london may be costly!
or i saw this yesterday and was thinking what a good spot more or less opposite bond street station

Radisson Blu Edwardian Berkshire Hotel, London

Another who would stay in central London. I’d say around Victoria could be a good bet- straight tube on the victoria line from Kings X and Walthamstow, very central to all the big sites, museums in south ken are 2 stops on the district and circle, walkable to harrods or again very quick tube. Mumsnet bloody loves a premier inn and there is one in Victoria but equally there are loads of swankier hotels if you plan on treating yourselves!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Are there plenty of food options around the kings cross area?

Coal drops yard and granary square are full of good options!

There are a couple of the Premier Inn Hub hotels in Westminster, they have very compact rooms, bit cheaper than the standard PI. We stayed in the one closest to Westminster Abbey, it was great, the DC loved it and very central for tubes and loads of things to do in walking distance.

AuntieMarys · 04/01/2023 14:45

KX premier inn is great, and so close to Cold Drops yard/ Granary Square for breakfast.

Wincher · 04/01/2023 14:48

There is a travelodge right next to/practically on top of Walthamstow Central tube station, and from there it’s only 20 minutes on the victoria line (comes every 90-120 seconds) into central London.

Siezethefish · 04/01/2023 14:48

Old street premier inn - lots of places to eat nearby and towards shoreditch, swimming pool 5 mins away

LauraDLoves · 04/01/2023 14:52

I’d suggest the Premier Inn at Farringdon. Lots of very nice places to eat in that neighbourhood, and v easy to get to Kings X, plus the tube, overground and crossrail (Elizabeth) lines. Short walk to St Paul’s cathedral and over the bridge to Tate Modern.

LauraDLoves · 04/01/2023 14:59

I would definitely NOT recommend staying at Tottenham Hale, especially if you’re unfamiliar with London. Also wouldn’t recommend staying in Walthamstow if you are wanting to visit places that are central, and I think Old Street is a bit grim with kids (unless you’re keen to go to trendy hipster places). Kings Cross is OK itself but the Premier Inn is in a noisy/polluted location (although the Fellow Pub next door is alright). Premier Inn Hub you need to check the room capacity with kids - also some rooms don’t have windows!

LavenderHillMob · 04/01/2023 15:03

There's a Premier Inn at Westfield Stratford

murasaki · 04/01/2023 15:05

I'd go for Kings Cross or Euston Road, easy to both Walthamstow and central London. Piccadilly line to Harrods from King's Cross.

LauraDLoves · 04/01/2023 15:05

It is not surprisingly not that easy to get from Walthamstow to Westfield Stratford by public transport. I’d go with Kings X or Farringdon.

tinytemper66 · 04/01/2023 15:07

St Giles onTottenham Court Rd is reasonably priced and very central.

purser25 · 04/01/2023 15:26

At least two bus routes from Walthamstow to Westfield Stratford. Lovely walk along the river Lea to the Olympic park maybe about 3 to 4 miles. Travel Lodge I think it is next to Walthamstow stadium. Cinema complex near the station with restaurants more in the old village.

knackeredmu · 04/01/2023 15:34

I would look on groupon or secret escapes - they usually have good deals for London hotels - we had a great room
In an annex by St Paul's for the same price as a trace lodge - it was a 4star hotel with a lovely roof terrace

Kings X is great for kids - lots to see and do

Download the Citymapper app for direct routes from a to b - includes buses walking etc and is so useful

As you may need 2 rooms I'd also look at Airbnbs

RatHammock · 04/01/2023 15:51

I think you will struggle to find much within that budget, tbh. You might squeak in with the Travelodge at Walthamstow Central but I think anything in central London will be £1k+.

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 04/01/2023 17:56

There's also a premier inn outside archway station. It's not a tourist spot but it's really handy for tube and not far from kings cross and much cheaper than the kings cross hotel options which are stupidly expensive for crap rooms. Usually kids get free breakfast too.

Asvan · 04/01/2023 22:22

Thank you to everyone. Lots of good suggestions here that I need to look into. I've decided to stay more central now and just go for the event at Walthamstow on the day. Could anyone provide an estimate on how much a taxi from kins cross to Walthamstow would cost? The event will go on until a bit later in the evening and dont fancy catching the tube too late in the night.

Wnikat · 04/01/2023 22:26

Prob about 40 quid if you need a black cab for 5 people. Personally I would get the tube, it’ll be 3 x quicker

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 04/01/2023 22:56

Would a black cab be that much? I would have though more 25-30 price mark. I don't know that area well so I could be wrong. There's an app called gett you can book black cabs. That will give you an estimate
