Where would you go for 1 night?

If you had 32 hours (ish) to go anywhere with DH where would you go?

We rarely have child free time but will have an overnight without any DC next year when DS1 is at respite while DS2&3 are away on a school trip.

What sort of trip would you like and where are you based.
A break in a small city (Bath/York/Chester...) would probably fit the bill.

Butwhichoneistheman · 30/12/2022 20:56

Cambridge, as you can really see everything in that time. Walk to Grantchester the next morning

starlingsintheslipstream · 30/12/2022 21:00

London for me - theatre, cocktails, general wandering around.

Whatnextarghhhhhh · 30/12/2022 21:01

What the budget?

spinningplate · 30/12/2022 21:07

No budget, being childfree is a very rare occurrence and we are going to splash out.

We are willing to consider all types of breaks - city, rural and everything in between. Travelling isn’t a issue so anywhere in the UK.

Where have you been already that you liked?

leftitabitlate22 · 30/12/2022 21:26

Where are you based?

There's no point travelling to the other end of the country for 24 hrs.

JustKeepSlimming · 30/12/2022 21:28

I'd probably go close to home and just relax for a while rather than do lots of travelling and feeling like I have to sight see. A few years ago, DH and I booked ourselves into a hotel that was 10 minutes from our house, and just enjoyed the pool and not having to cook or clean!

Chewbecca · 30/12/2022 21:29

I’d go to a matinee at the theatre and then a Michelin starred dinner. So my first port of call would be finding the show I wanted to see, then find a nearby amazing restaurant, with rooms if outside London.

RitaSueandBobtwo · 30/12/2022 21:35

For 36 hours I wouldn’t want to waste too much of this time travelling. Personally, I would go somewhere max 3 hours away so I could start relaxing, unwinding and enjoying my break right away. What would you enjoy most coastal destination, countryside, city or somewhere in between? What sort of things do you like or would you enjoy doing shopping, meals out, sightseeing, spa, theatre, museums, blustery invigorating walks etc etc.

spinningplate · 30/12/2022 21:49

I like the idea of somewhere in the countryside to relax rather than feeling we have to ‘do’ anything specific. Life is busy and it would be good to be able to relax. DH likes country or costal walks.

We regularly go to the theatre as a family so probably not that, although maybe something we wouldn’t take DS’s to would work.

We have previously enjoyed London, York, Oxford, Cambridge.

Le manoir aux quatres saisons - Oxford countryside, incredible food and total luxury. Not cheap though!

Hambleton hall in Rutland otherwise. A country house hotel on an island overlooking the water - Michelin star food again.

rumbypumby · 30/12/2022 22:00

Edinburgh absolutely

pursudebyablackdog · 30/12/2022 22:31

Burgh island (especially if you are an Agatha Christie fan and money no issue!)
I've never stayed as way above our budget but last time we visited Bigbury we went to the Pilchard Inn. The hotel looks like an amazing place to stay!

MinnieMountain · 31/12/2022 07:48

I’d stay and eat at Morston Hall.

bjjgirl · 31/12/2022 07:51

Lancaster loads of countryside close by and lovey city to stay- there's a French B and B which is amazing and so really good deals called simply french

Or alternatively Harrogate is beautiful and has loads of walks close by

Bala wales beautiful not much to do as in going out out but loads of countryside and lake based activities

Edinburgh is an amazing weekend but not really chill, lots of lovely walks round the city and I highly recommend the ghost tours

PikachusSmarterBrother · 31/12/2022 08:46

Yeah, 36 hours isn't very long, so it depends where you live.

RitaSueandBobtwo · 31/12/2022 09:16

Depending on where you live I might try Northumberland lots of big beautiful blustery empty beaches (Bamburgh, Alnmouth, Druridge Bay, Embleton etc etc) to walk along and blow the cobwebs away and round the day off with a pub meal, few drinks and an early night and a leisurely lie in. Unsure where to stay as we always took the kids but it would be lovely out of season just wrap up well.

Lake District - any amount of stunning scenery and places to go.

Norfolk and visit Wells Near or by the Sea.

Whitby/Sandsend, RobinHoods Bay - much busier than Northumberland but Whitby has a big beach, the abbey and lots of coffee shops.

East Neuk of Fife - Elie.

spinningplate · 31/12/2022 11:56

There’s some really good suggestions here, thank you. I will work through them.
