Hello

Traveling to London with my Daughter in Dec would love advise on reasonable priced hotel in a good area to go sightseeing. Would like to stay somewhere that's easy to travel from and safe or easy to get to at night. We plan to go on hop on/off buss to see the city she wants to see the Christmas lights, Hyde park winter wonderland and hope to see Wicked the musical. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry no advice but following for suggestions as planning a similar trip :) x

Premier Inn. The one in Kensington is convenient for The Apollo Victoria as it is on the direct tube line but most of the London ones would also be fine.

pastapestoparmesan · 25/10/2022 11:09

My advice is don’t bother with winter wonderland, it’s insanely expensive.

Scrumhalf · 25/10/2022 11:16

We stayed at the Premier Inn County Hall last year which is right beside the London Eye. Great location for sightseeing and easily walkable to lots of theatres.

CarrieHunt · 25/10/2022 11:29

Thanks so much just checked it out unfortunately county hall booked out for my dates

I like to stay here, always feel safe walking back at night alone, falling asleep with a view of tower bridge is fantastic.

Comefromaway · 25/10/2022 11:34

My parentds stayed at The Tower Hotel a couple of times. It is more expensive than Premier but they liked it. it was very convenient for the West End, but no so much so for Victoria (which is where Wicked is).

AnnaMagnani · 25/10/2022 11:37

Premier Inn or Premier Inn hub.

To really get costs down stay in Travelodge or Holiday Inn near Acton and get the tube in everyday. However that is only if you absolutely need to do it on a shoestring as it's a bit souless but the cost difference is significant.

Hidingunderthetableshaking · 25/10/2022 11:37

I guess its about half hour walk from victoria? It cost me 25 quid in a cab two years back.

We have stayed here a few times. Great location, decent sized rooms, good breakfast included.

CarrieHunt · 26/10/2022 08:36

Thanks so much to everyone who took time to reply to my message, a friend recommend Premier Inn Aldgate checked it out this morning seems to be the best price so far .

Try St Giles hotel at Tottenham Court Road. I walk from there to Hyde Park and most of covent garden/Leicester Square area but both bus and tube links are awesome. It used to be cheaper than all the suggestions above

Love winter wonderland!!! No point in just looking at the cost of stuff, it's good to also know it's value too

Why would you need to spend that much on a cab, or even walk? The tube is perfectly safe at that time of night - it's usually pretty busy at night and especially at the weekend.

latetothefisting · 26/10/2022 08:50

I would get a hotel closer to the theatre if your main concern is safety because you'll be leaving the show later at night whereas the sight seeing will be done in the day.

Either that or get a hotel that is very close to a tube station - tube itself is usually safe but its when you have a hotel that's 10-15min walk down dark side streets can be a bit intimidating if you don't know the area.

Also you can just get a normal city center route bus for 1.50 to see the sights and sit up top, rather than paying a fortune for the "official" one.

Icedlatteplease · 26/10/2022 08:54

You might take a cab because you have a suitcase you don't want to have to drag on the underground

You might walk because walking along the river is beautiful and you save money on a tube. And in summer the tube definitely smells bad.

Icedlatteplease · 26/10/2022 08:55

That was in reply to @BIWI

Premier Inn Southwark Station (the address is The Cut) is a great location, Waterloo station tube and buses are a 5-10 min walk, restaurants in the Cut or you can walk up to the South Bank and across to Covent Garden. Southwark tube station is literally across from the hotel. We come into Waterloo on the train so it's a good option for us, so may be worth considering which train station you come into and find a hotel based on that. Definitely go and see some of the Christmas lights/displays in shops - Liberty and Fortnum and Mason will be worth a visit but get there early. Covent Garden, Carnaby Street and Regent St lights are usually very good too, although will be very busy. It's a nice time of year to walk and soak up the atmosphere if the weather is dry.

purplewolfie · 26/10/2022 09:00

Or premier inn waterloo. It's right behind the county hall one but a bit cheaper

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/10/2022 09:01

We come by train from the East so either stay at the Premier Inn at Stratford which has fantastic transport links and the shopping centre + Olympic Park. if your DD likes swimming sometimes they have the BIGGEST inflatable course which my DD loved at the Olympic pool.

Or we stay at the Travel Lodge at Liverpool Street, the food isnt great but there is a Tescos nearby and a really nice pizza place down the road + Spitalfields market a short walk away. You can then use Liverpool Street or Aldgate East for travel, but you are fairly central and could walk to most touristy places.

beetr00 · 26/10/2022 09:11

If you don't mind Travelodge this has decent reviews, juggle your dates to find best deal?

Travelodge London City 20 Middlesex Street, London, E1 7EX,
(20 mins on circle line to The Apollo)
e.g.
Sun 18th Dec 22 £47.99 Mon 19th Dec 22 £93.99 Total:£141.98

Neither of those things were said/written though, were they?

I agree, a walk down the river might be very lovely - but the OP and the poster I was responding to implied that it was their safety that they were worried about.

And I'm not sure where/when you've been travelling on the tube, but as someone who (used to, when I was working) use the tube every day, it really doesn't smell in the summer!

Similar location to the Aldgate one is the Hub by premier inn London city bank, slightly better location than Aldagate imo and really nice, I've paid £200 for 2 nights in December.

CarrieHunt · 26/10/2022 09:39

Going to check out all the hotel advice now thank's so much everyone, we are flying into Stansted morning flight so plan to get Express to Liverpool Street, hope to drop off our bags to where ever we stay. Hotels seem very expensive but once we get a reasonable price in good location it's been years since I visited London would not know my way around and would like to feel safe as it's just the 2 of us my DD is 14. She just so excited to visit London 1st time her she said would love to see Christmas lights so thanks for advice on getting regular bus rather than tourist one that will save a few pound any idea what bus no. to get. Hope to go to Hype Park winter wonderland. Would the hop on hop off be a good idea to see all the sights on the day we arrive or the next day and then either the first night or 2nd night hope to see a show like wicked . If anyone has any other ideas would appreciate it like getting afternoon tea somewhere or going to Hard Rock Cafe also she wants to go to Primark

If you don’t mind a Travelodge, there is one in Coram Street, a few minutes walk from Russell Square Underground Station on the Piccadilly line. Liverpool Street to Holborn Station on Central line then one stop to Russell Square or 7/8 minute walk. There is a great little shopping precinct nearby, Brunswick Square for food etc. Covent Garden is worth a visit and theatreland is also within walking distance.

outdoorcushions20 · 26/10/2022 09:56

Definitely try the Premier Inn Hub in Covent Garden. It's right in the middle of all the fun and activity and because it's self service, it's a bit cheaper than usual hotels in that area.
