Whitby or Scarborough?

Rnm62 · 28/09/2022 14:19

Looking to go away for 3-4 nights soon. Me, my partner & 2 very small children (22 month & 10 month).

Which place would you recommend out of the two?

Any advice/ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Scarborough definitely as it has more to occupy young children and some nice long walks around the bay and peasholm park if you want to shove them in their pushchairs for a walk. There are also open top buses and an aquarium. I would recommend you stay at the premier inn as it’s close to everything and not too pricey. Whitby is more shops and a harbour and not much for young children. If you do go to Scarborough make sure you go to the clock cafe (south beach behind the spa) it’s my favourite cafe!

There’s a brilliant and very family friendly YHA at Robin Hoods Bay. Google Boggle Hole. lots of outdoorsy stuff, beach access, caves, cliff top walks etc. 20 min drive to Whitby, which is much nicer than Scarborough IMHO.

Definitely Scarborough (though admit to being a tad biased!). Lovely pushchair-friendly walks as Veganuaryborn has said and plenty to do and see within walking distance. Great choice of eateries and shops too. Happy holidays! 🌊

Scarborough with little ones. Recommend ice creams from Harbour Bar.

CiderJolly · 28/09/2022 18:55

Scarborough’s beach front is your typical English seaside town- probably a little rougher round the edges than Whitby but lots to do, beautiful views, Peasholm park is gorgeous and free!

Whitby is definitely more upmarket- lots of vampire themed stuff due to Bram Stoker’s Dracula being inspired by the town. Again it’s lovely but given the choice, with kids, I’d choose Scarborough.

Visit the other wherever you decide to stay.

I avoid Scarbados 😉 as an adult and much prefer Whitby but with little DC I'd go to Scarborough.
Alternatively have you thought about Bridlington?
Massive beaches, funfair, slot machines, boat rides etc.
I actually really like Brid

Mommabear20 · 28/09/2022 19:01

While Whitby is my favourite of the 2, Scarborough is a better choice with young children. Whitby is a lot of cobbled streets and very little to entertain little ones.

Hoppinggreen · 28/09/2022 19:48

As above I prefer Whitby but with little children I would pick Scarborough

Yumyumpumpernickel · 28/09/2022 22:34

Scarborough every time, children or no children.

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 28/09/2022 22:44

I live in Scarborough, as much as I love whitby there is way more to do in Scarborough for small children but a day trip to whitby and brid should definitely be done!

RosesAndHellebores · 28/09/2022 22:48

Scarborough. I detest Whitby - I find it a deeply depressing place.

maddy68 · 28/09/2022 22:53

Whitby. Is lovely Scarborough is bigger but more run down.

Hexenjagd · 28/09/2022 22:58

Used to holiday round there as a kid.

as a grown up or if you have a dramatic teen. Whitby, hands down. Spooky, gothic and loads of quirky poky little shops.

With little kids, then Scarborough is the better of the two, but actually Brid beats it hands down. Bigger beaches, more to do, more accessible and all pretty much on the flat.

blockpavingismynightmare · 28/09/2022 23:02

And if you choose Scarbs then stay at The Bike and Boot. It's fab !

BertieBob · 28/09/2022 23:15

My parents now live in this area. I'd also say Bridlington is a better alternative too. Lots to do, 2 lovely beaches, most things are walking distance. My DC love the pool at the leisure centre.

Sago1 · 28/09/2022 23:18

Filey is my favourite!

Honeyroar · 28/09/2022 23:22

I like Filey too. Scarborough or Bridlington are better for children, but at 10 and 22 months they only need a beach and a ice cream, surely! So Whitby would entertain them enough.

This ! To a T

Scarborough has the sea life centre and lots of arcades , stuff to do .

Whitby is my fave but nothing g for kiddies. It's quaint and upmarket and lovely for adults.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 28/09/2022 23:27

Echoing other posters but yes Scarborough is much better with young DC, I would recommend a day trip to Whitby if you can though but I wouldn't take small DC there for any longer than that.

I love Filey but (dons hard hat in case my mum is reading) there's not a huge amount to do there. Sorry mum!!

bloodyplanes · 28/09/2022 23:39

Whitby is a horrible, depressing, miserable place with very unfriendly locals! I wouldn't go there.

thenewduchessoflapland · 28/09/2022 23:45

Cayton bay holiday park just outside of Scarborough is a fantastic place for little ones;there's age appropriate stuff for them to do there and the location means it's ideally situated for trips to Whitby,Scarborough,Filey and Bridlington.

mrsfollowill · 28/09/2022 23:54

I would not go to Whitby with a buggy or pram! Too many steps/cobbles/narrow streets. Scarborough is more family friendly at those ages for sure. Whitby as an adult (with optional 'dramatic teen'!) is great - I love the vibe there - loads of quirky shops and good places to eat- loads to see and do but go when your kids can reliably walk. Cayton Bay beach is amazing but was down a very steep hill the way we went - felt like climbing a cliff to get back so I'd research that some more if you go there.

Abouttimemum · 28/09/2022 23:57

Yep same as others, DH and I would go to Whitby, but Scarbs with our little one. We were there for Easter weekend and stayed at the South Bay premier inn which was spot on. He rode the donkeys, spent a few grand in the arcades, went on the big wheel, funfair rides, castle, beach, ice cream etc.
I mean it’s rough as toast but fun all the same!

Brid is an excellent shout as well.

CPL593H · 29/09/2022 00:05

With little ones, much as I hate to say it because I love Whitby, Scarborough. Whitby would be more doable in decent summer weather because there is a good beach, but at this time of year it wouldn't have as much on offer for children (unless you have been lucky enough to produce baby proto Goths Grin)

Agree Brid a good option for a change of scene (but do go to Whitby for the day at least!)
