Hidden gem service stations and stop offs between Birmingham and Scottish Borders

We are heading to the Scottish Borders from Birmingham for a long weekend. Can anyone recommend any hidden gem services, stop-offs or must-sees en route to break up the journey? DCs are 8 and 5.

The best known I'm aware of is Tebay Services which is lovely.

We’ve used the Extra Mile guide before and found some cracking places.

Another vote for Tebay. I used to visit as a child, and I was there a few weeks ago. Independently owned, great food and a lovely farmshop.

the Cairn Lodge services at Douglas (just off the m74) are nice but you might not be coming that far north before turning off depending where you’re going in the Borders. Think they are the same chain as Tebay (which were mobbed last time I was there)

Gretna outlet village has pizza express etc as well as the outlet shops.

Brockholes Nature Reserve isn’t much of a detour. It’s got a playground, cafe, trails of different lengths and a den building area.
Tebay is not just your average service station. It’s got a play area, homemade food and a farm shop. Definitely worth a stop.
There’s also Samlesbury Hall which has lots for the dc to play on, plus a waffle cafe!
The Rheged Centre is an arts and heritage site with shops, cafes, indoor and outdoor play areas. There’s also a 3D cinema, exhibitions and children’s workshops in the school holidays. There’s also a petrol station.

There is a lovely nature reserve ( with toilets) not far from Sandbach services, but not sure if that will be too early in your journey. It's a great place for a dog walk to break the journey.

Another one saying Tebay services.

We stopped at Morecombe last time I drove up the M6 - fab Victorian style park perfect for those ages, with a cafe. Planning to go next time and try the pier etc.

On the return journey we stopped at Sizergh (National Trust) and enjoyed their trail through the woods.

we weren’t going as far as you though so could probably spend more time on our breaks.

Tebay is good as service stations go, but hidden it most certainly isn't! The last few times I've stopped there it has been absolutely heaving. A PP suggested Rheged which is the same company but likely to be a bit quieter and there's more to do if you want a longer break. Ditto Cairn Lodge, though that may be further north than you're going.
Nowhere will be quiet at this time of year of course but I might be inclined to come off the motorway and go up the A6 for a bit. Scorton, between Preston and Lancaster is a very pretty village with a nice cafe called The Priory. Guys Thatched Hamlet at Bisborrow near Preston is nice but likely to be busy. You'll find plenty of cafes etc in the villages along the A6 throughout Lancashire and Cumbria etc. If you want to get the kids to let off some steam, Wiliamson Park in Lancaster is lovely and it used to have a butterfly house - it's years since I went so I'm not sure if its still there.
Depending where you are going in the Borders, The Devil's Porridge Museum at Eastrigg has a lovely cafe, and the museum itself is very interesting too.

you could go into Carlisle which is only 5min off the M6 and there’s a nice park by the river and castle. Also a couple of supermarkets for cheaper than motorway petrol.
or take the Penrith junction into Pooley Bridge where you can paddle in Ullswater and there’s a couple of nice cafes. It can be busy and hard to get parked though.

Not a services as such, but from M1 J39 there are a couple of possibilities within 5 mins:

Come off J39 to the east, towards Wakefield. Turn right at the 2nd roundabout /Mercedes garage - this will take you to Pugney's Country Park - park based round a lake, playground, cafe, toilets. You'll pass a really cheap Shell garage on the way in from the motorway (not the really pricey BP you'll come to first).

Come of J39 to the west, towards Denby Dale, and about a mile down the road you'll come to Blacker Hall Farm Shop. Lovely local/deli/homemade food, cafe, small playground, toilets, but no fuel.

Closed last year! Now a Highways England public engagement office.

Tebay services are great BUT you could go 10 minutes off the motorway into a little village called Orton.

Find This place. Lovely little tea shop selling good home cooked food a lot cheaper than Tebay and the most fantastic Belgian chocolates to buy.

Ignore me, you probably won't be using the M1. 🤦

Further south there's also Brockholes which is right by the M6 and a nice country park with trails, toilets and a cafe. It's pay & display to park.
