LOVE Conwy - where else is similar?

We are on holiday in Conwy, North Wales. It ticks every single box for me. I am loving it more than any other Uk destination we have been. Where else can I go that is similar?

What we love about Conwy:

  • coastal and beautiful (castle, boats etc). We don’t need a beach but do need water.

  • larger than a village so lots to see and do (love historic stuff like old houses and castles)

  • total foodie destination. Excellent butcher, baker, local coffees, fab restaurants etc.

  • train station is vital. We have no car and travel by train from London

Any thoughts? We travel as a family of 5. But all kids are teens/adults and like similar to my list above.

Yes dont mention Criccieth or llanbedrog with different but fantastic.
I think the Train is the issue they have to travel by Train

Wiifitmama · 09/07/2022 12:16

Some great ideas thank you everyone! Criccieth Is too inaccessible for us. Many trains and buses. We have done Liverpool - loved it!

Of all the suggestions on here that I have been looking into, I think Tenby might be the winner. Long journey but not too difficult - two trains. Looks like it has everything we would look for.

Any further comments on Tenby?

Forgot to say we have also already done Scarborough.

You can get the train to Anglesey - London Euston to Holyhead. There are some great places to eat on Anglesey!

countdowntonap · 09/07/2022 12:22

Tenby is great. Had a lovely week just down from there last year.

TammyOne · 09/07/2022 13:33

Yeah Tenby is gorgeous

Funf · 09/07/2022 17:23

Tenby is great but I feel Conwy has more locally but as long as you plan transport you should be fine

I love Conwy - we go with our dog and the beaches at Morfa Conwy by the Marina and opposite at Deganwy are brilliant as they can be practically empty on a sunny day in July.

I also like Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) although it might be a bit small/quiet for you . I haven't been since pre-Covid so don't know whether it has suffered with things closing down - but I recall it has a few places to eat and a few nice little shops. You can get the train further along the coast to Towyn (not particularly nice but has a proper supermarket and things like crazy golf which we like to play), then further along to Barmouth.

We stayed in a chalet park along the side of the estuary - amazing views .

I'm agreeing with both points of view on Caernarfon.we always visit for the day when we are at Conwy and it's a nice day out but can see what the poster means about a run down feeling there in places .

You could do Aberystwyth. Train. Good beach (though pebbly), nice places to eat (Ultracomida, Gwesty Cymru, Medina). There's a Premier Inn in a good spot. Nice little steam train up the Rheidol valley. Nice walk over the cliffs to Clarach / North. If you time the tide right you can see the petrified forest in North. There's also a train to Borth and a small petting zoo called the Animalarium.

You could get the bus down to Newquay. Lovely beach, fishing trips, good fish and chips in the Lime Crab.

Great hotel / restaurant called the Harbourmaster halfway between on the bus route.

Long weekend rather than full holiday though as there's not enough public transport to get to other places nearby

A bus runs between Tenby and Manorbier and Pembroke, both of which have great castles. Manorbier has a beach too.
Boats go from Tenby to Caldey island (monastery) and two RSPB reserves.
You might not be able to get everywhere with no car but we go to Pembrokeshire car-less most summers and have a great time.

Keswick

Dimdimdim · 14/07/2022 19:10

Where would you recommend eating in Conwy. Tried the Mulberry, which was nice but £7 for cheesy chips (which were soggy) seemed overpriced. Looking for a nice, cooked meal.

CottonSock · 14/07/2022 20:08

Tenby is worth the journey, Caernarfon is not in my opinion.

TitInATrance · 14/07/2022 20:14

There is a train to Newquay, but not Brixham - I do like Teignmouth which does have a station, beach, harbour, walks, restaurants and you can get the ferry across to Shaldon and the Ness tunnels to the beach.

Exmouth?

DisappointingAvocado · 14/07/2022 20:18

North Berwick ticks all your boxes I think. You would have to change trains at Edinburgh. Alternatively Dunbar is also lovely and on a direct line from London.

Zarzuela · 14/07/2022 21:51

We just had a lovely week staying in a cottage in the Mount Edgcumbe estate by Plymouth. Foot ferry from Plymouth (though I don't know how simple bus from station to ferry is). But once here, car free, bikes to hire, lots of walks on the headland, small beach, excellent cafe at the cottage door. And all sorts in Plymouth, which you can easily go to and from on that little ferry.

JustMarriedBecca · 15/07/2022 21:53

Sleeper train to Scotland. Elie just outside of Edinburgh or North Berwick. Or Fort William and on to Mallaig via the train (which may be the Harry Potter express).

Lymington?

Easy from London, good selection of food places, perfect for a short hop to the IOW for the day. New forest on your doorstep, great outdoor lido/ sea baths, great walking in pretty much any direction and I should imagine the buses that tour the forest would stop there.

I came to say Lymington.

Also don’t dismiss Arundel for not being coastal, it’s not far and train/ bus, probably boat too.

Abouttimemum · 15/07/2022 22:06

You need to honestly get yourself up the Northumberland coast.
I travel to London often and it’s 3 hours or less from Newcastle. Train stations dotted up the east coast mainline to Berwick. Castles all over. Loads of history. No tourists really. It’s perfect.

Lovemusic33 · 15/07/2022 22:09

We enjoyed Stratford upon Avon after it was recommended on here.

MoonKnight · 15/07/2022 22:12

Abergavenny ticks most boxes. Come in September when the food festival is on!

Nipplestoyou · 15/07/2022 22:12

Off season, St Ives or Padstow. Lovely walks from both, enough other activities to fill a week's worth of things to do. Plenty of dining out options.
Don't go in the summer holidays though; they're hellish then. May Half term is the best time.
