What things are you after?

Relaxing, sight seeing. I like beaches.

So you want a city break and a beach?
That limits your options then!
Edinburgh - great city and a beach a couple of miles down the road at Portobello
Newcastle and take the Metro to Tynemouth and Whitley Bay for the beach
Belfast and combine your city break with a couple of days touring the Antrim Coast

Thank you 😊 any other city breaks? You don't have to include beaches this time.

Northumberland is stunning and full of good restaurants/breathtaking beaches but a bit lacking in cities…

zafferana · 07/07/2022 10:29

Edinburgh and London are the obvious ones, if you haven't been.

Other big cities like Manchester and Liverpool have plenty of good museums, shops, restaurants and cultural life. I quite like the look of Bristol too (never been).

HSKAT · 07/07/2022 10:32

Newcastle
Seahouses - can go into Bambrugh, beadnell, Alnwick, Morpeth etc from there
Manchester
Liverpool
Edinburgh
Scarborough

Love all these places

We often go to Stamford, lovely old town and some good walks nearby. The best place to stay is the Old Bank Apartments in the centre of town, there are some good restaurants too and loads of antiquing.

emmathedilemma · 07/07/2022 10:40

everyone seems to be raving about Liverpool at the moment but I haven't been (well I have years ago when i was a child but not recently!)
York has lots to see and do
Manchester is often overlooked but has plenty of museums / galleries and good shopping and night life. Likewise Glasgow.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 07/07/2022 10:47

Northern Ireland is next on my list.

We have been to Edinburgh & Inverness/Fort William in the past year which were both fun.

dunkery · 07/07/2022 11:00

Oxford, lovely architecture and a very nice shopping centre.

BadAtMaths2 · 07/07/2022 11:04

Liverpool - brilliant museum, food, shopping and sightseeing.
Manchester as above.
Newcastle as above - lovely independent cinema too and easy access to a beach.
Edinburgh.

Thistooshallpsss · 07/07/2022 11:06

Sxr · 07/07/2022 11:09

Where in Northumberland should I visit? Is Blyth a good option?

Do a night in Newcastle, then head up the coast. If you have a car, stay in Alnmouth/Embleton/Alnwick/Bamburgh/Beadnell.

calmlakes · 07/07/2022 12:31

I wouldn't choose Blyth no.
I really like Northumberland but do think you probably need a car.

I really enjoyed Belfast.

MissBlacksheep · 07/07/2022 12:36

I don't have a car. Relies on public transport.

Sootir3d · 07/07/2022 12:46

Blyth is nice in some places but I wouldn't recommend it for a holiday! We visit the nice bits regularly as a relative lives there.

I would base yourself somewhere like Beadnell Towers if you have a decent budget.

We are doing a couple of nights in York then over to Scarborough for a couple of nights. Tried and tested!

calmlakes · 07/07/2022 12:57

I would do York if you haven't already been.
You can get the bus to the coast from there if you want to.

emmathedilemma · 07/07/2022 12:57

You could do Alnmouth in Northumberland. It's a lovely little right by the sea and you could probably walk from the station which on the main east coast London-Edinburgh line. There's a bus services goes into Alnwick and I think along the coast.
