Where in the UK have you been so far? Looking for recommendations. 😊

Ok.
Alnmouth is very scenic with good pubs and walks.

Alnwick isn't by the sea but has more to see including the castle (an interesting poison garden and Harry Potter stuff) and my favorite bookshop.

If you can combine both with public transport it would be a very nice low key short break.

Loads to do in Liverpool and a short hop on the train to Formby for a lovely beach

ReviewingTheSituation · 07/07/2022 13:15

Liverpool for the city and then a train out to the coast to see the Gormley sculptures and there's a nice sand-duney beach

Exeter- lovely city with beach/coast nearby

Brighton for city and beach together

Bristol (coast nearby but not typical beachy beaches - if the tide is a long way out you've had it!)

Cambridge is lovely (but no coast, obvs)

St Andrews if you fancy a bit further north - AMAZING beaches

Where are you coming from? That makes quite a difference in terms of what's sensible on public transport. Unpopular as it may be, it might be cheaper to fly than train...

Go to Glasgow. It has everything. Best shops outside London, amazing museums, very energetic nightlife and pub scene and only an hour's drive from Loch Lomond and the start of the Highlands.

Relaxing, sight seeing. I like beaches.

You want Barcelona!

Good heavens no.

Bath
York
London
Oxford

And that’s pretty much it!

It doesn't have a beach 😂

Lots of dirty puddles if I recall correctly

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 07/07/2022 13:30

Glasgow is amazing, and Loch Lomond has beaches.

I'm going on a wee break to Whitby/Durham/Newcastle next week.
The Newcastle day isn't set though, I might go out to the coast for the day, or drive home to Glasgow stopping at places in Northumberland.
If I miss out Newcastle I'll go back and do it at a later date.

I live in Manchester.

Not Liverpool then - that's a day trip!

I'd go for St Andrews in that case - perfect blend of laid back city and beach. You'd really feel like you'd had a proper break after a few days there.

Ukholidaylover · 07/07/2022 14:41

Definitely Definitely NOT Blyth!! I lived there for my teenage years and it used to be the drugs capital of the North East!! Avoid like the plague.

midsomermurderess · 07/07/2022 14:44

I really like Dorset, so perhaps Lyme Regis. Or Bristol.

ResentfulLemon · 07/07/2022 14:53

Cardiff can be a lovely city break and if you need to use public transport is a straight train ride from Manchester.

You can easily get to Penarth or Barry Island from Cardiff via train too. Penarth is more Brighton-esque with the pier and pebble beaches, Barry Island more traditional British beach.

madmay · 07/07/2022 17:57

Cardiff or Swansea (preferably the former for city life but the latter for fab beaches)

Riverlee · 07/07/2022 18:03

Another vote for York and Edinburgh.

mosesb · 07/07/2022 18:12

Brighton for city and beach

kateandme · 07/07/2022 18:32

I no they aren't cities.but the lakes are just amazing for a rejuvinating stay away.with everything else at the moment.its bliss out there.

Or towns around Somerset.the air feels different round there.

Stratford.

musicmum75 · 07/07/2022 22:30

Brighton, Cambridge, York, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bath, Salisbury, Canterbury.

MinnieMountain · 08/07/2022 06:09

Bradford-on-Avon.

Arnaquer · 08/07/2022 06:16

Bath
Cardiff
Edinburgh
Belfast

Warwick, with castle and there is a museum, plenty of history. Leamington is 3 miles by bus or train and decent restaurants - there is a food festival first weekend in September and then Stratford close by bus or train for Shakespeare stuff
