Caravans/Lodges in Northumberland

Looking for advice on family friendly self catering in Northumberland please. Ideally a static caravan or chalet, on a small, quiet site. Don't really want anywhere where the units are right slap bang on top of each other or anywhere with evening entertainment! Kids play area would be nice though. Any recommendations??

I know you say you don’t want evening entertainment, but we had a lovely stay at Felmoor. I think they had entertainment two of the nights that we were there. We didn’t stay for it, and couldn’t hear it when we were back in our lodge.

DecemberCroc · 22/06/2022 08:35

great, thanks. I’ll have a look at that one. Was the site quiet at night, both with other people and road noise from A1….it does look like it’s right on it from the map?

Yes, it’s on at A1 which is super handy. No noise at all though, the trees muffle it all.

DecemberCroc · 22/06/2022 17:20

Brill, thanks. Was it a static or hot tub lodge you had? Does look like a great location for the places we want to visit

Kielder Waterside is very nice.

DecemberCroc · 22/06/2022 19:41

I had looked at that one, does look lovely but a bit further out than we were hoping. Want to visit Alnwick and Bamburgh, Warkworth etc. thanks for the suggestion though

Seahouses, not sure if they all privately owned or some rented

DecemberCroc · 22/06/2022 20:04

Thanks HSKAT - have you been to any of the Parkdean ones?

Herding Hill Farm is just what you’re looking for! Really quiet, kids play area, beautiful location.

Theres a site at Felton, right beside the A1, which is nice.

Theres usually few lodges on Sykes and other cottage sites.

We stayed at a friend of a friends place there and the park is lovely. Small bar, nice kids playground and pet friendly.

DecemberCroc · 22/06/2022 20:32

Oh Herding Hill looks amazing, pity it’s so far south from Alnwick…I’ll definitely save that one for another year though!

Hadn’t come across Bockenfield, is that separate to Felton Park then? Did you get much traffic noise there?

thanks everyone!

A while ago we stayed near Warkworth in a beautiful lodge near Warkworth. We went at Easter (I'd won vouchers but only enough to go not in the summer). The east wind was a bit lazy (ie went straight through you, didn't bother going round) but the holiday was amazing. Best memory scuttling through snow in swimming cosy to get in to hot tub, and letting snow flakes melt on your tongue. Alnwick poison garden also v interesting....hubby behaved that day in case I got ideas.

DecemberCroc · 22/06/2022 20:40

Oh where was the lodge Theoldwrinkley? Warkworth looks nice and is quite central for where we want to visit.

Springhill Farm near Seahouses is nice.

We've also stayed at Parkdean Cresswell - lovely location but crap site (evening entertainment, generally on top of each other). It was the only thing affordable and available last year due to lots of people staying in the UK for summer

LadyIckenham · 22/06/2022 20:50

OP, I'd have thought the site upthread near Felton would be good. Felton is only ten or so mins from Alnwick and you can take the coast road to Warkworth. There's also a caravan park at Swarland, though I don't know what it's like. Swarland isn't terribly exciting but has a really good playground and is centrally located.

Wooler is lovely but I think might be more remote than you want. Fantastic base for the cheviots which are hugely underrated.

Wooler is much closer to Bamburgh and Seahouses than Felton which is at the most snarled up part of the single carriageway A1 so getting anywhere takes ages. Wooler is also handy for Holy Island. The two side by side parks at Felton are literally ON the A1. I’m local and don’t see that attraction of staying on a busy A road

DecemberCroc · 22/06/2022 21:02

Spring Hill Farm looks lovely but it seems to fill up quickly! Had also looked at the Cresswell one, was a bit put off by the entertainment - not really our thing, though kids would love it!

Will look at the Wooler one, is it quiet-ish?

Felton and Swarland seem to be very close to the A1 but good locations otherwise. Don’t want to be sitting outside hearing lorries thundering past!!

good ideas everyone! Some on here I’ve not heard of.

Anyone know anything about Church Point Holiday Park in Newbiggin by the Sea….? I don’t know that area of Northumberland at all.

Or has anyone been to the Riverside Caravan park in Rothbury or Percy Wood In Swarland? These look to be smaller sites, some with play areas but nothing more by way of facilities.

RampantIvy · 23/06/2022 17:01

I know this part of Northumberland fairly well, but don't know anything about the caravan parks.

There isn't much at Swarland, but it is fairly centrally located for places to visit in North Northumberland. Rothbury has more going for it as it is nice little town. The Cocquet Valley is lovely, you have Cragside on your doorstep and getting to the coast is pretty easy.

Bockenfield looks very close to the A1, but you might be OK at Felton Park. Felton has The Running Fox cafe, which is worth a visit.

There is a large caravan park at Amble, but it might be too big for your liking.

Village Farm, Shilbottle. Cottages, chalets etc all with use of a heated indoor pool and gym. Ten mins from Alnwick, ten muns from the coast - perfect!

SirChenjins · 23/06/2022 17:06

Love Percy Wood - a lovely quiet site near all the places you've listed, can highly recommend. Try booking directly with them as you can often get the best deals and the best caravans and lodges.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/06/2022 20:25

I’ve stayed at the Wooler one. It’s very quiet. There’s a pool and I think entertainment over the road but we didn’t use it. There’s at least one play park on site. I like Verdant leisure.

I haven’t stayed at Church Point but think it’s quite entertainment focused and not on the best beach. I wouldn’t choose it myself.
