St Andrews - September

Reusername · 06/06/2022 19:30

DS is going to St Andrews Uni and we have to bring him up from the South of England. Unsurprisingly all the airbnbs etc are booked up. Can anyone make any suggestions, know of accommodation that is normally rented privately, good places very nearby etc?

There is a St Andrews uni thread over in higher education....a very helpful bunch, try posting there

VI0LET · 06/06/2022 19:40

Have you tried in Dundee ? Yes it’s also a university city but its much bigger.

emmathedilemma · 07/06/2022 13:35

Dundee is a good call, they might even have a different term start date to St Andrews. Try the villages along the Fife coast too, there should be some AirBnBs there and the section from Elie to Crail is beautiful and only a short drive to St Andrews. What dates do you need?

MrszClaus · 07/06/2022 13:40

We stayed in Edinburgh and drove up in the morning of! Not cheap, but we had a nice hotel.

Annexlife · 07/06/2022 14:40

Check Anstruther for a nice seaside town close by too

butteriesplease · 07/06/2022 15:27

Perth isn't super far away from St Andrews (just under an hour I think). Not sure how far you are prepared to drive tho? Stirling is a bit further, but not too far (1.5h). Google maps and hotels.com are probably your friend here.

Reusername · 09/06/2022 14:52

Thank you. I think we will explore the seaside towns because we don't want to go up to come down again. We are looking at 2nd Sept to around 4/5th I think. We just want to settle DS in before we disappear.

You’ve made me realise we need to get on this too! Hotels/B&B availability for the offer holder day was dire.

DD is adamant that she wants to be dropped off and have us scram! After lockdown, she is ready to spread her wings, meet new people, etc. We would definitely cramp her style!

emmathedilemma · 09/06/2022 15:03

This is cute or this one or if you can live with all the blue!

JennyWreny · 15/06/2022 12:01

Did you find anywhere @Reusername? I just booked a couple of Premier Inn rooms in St Andrews this morning. Looks like it pretty booked up but 2/9 was available if a single night is any good to you. We will look to stay elsewhere after that. I’m not sure when the move in dates will be so booked flexible rates.

Reusername · 17/08/2022 17:05

Thanks, still not found anywhere. I keep hoping a late addition might come up. I'd like to be as near to St As as possible since we have a long drive from the south and don't want lots of driving back and forwards.

If you’re stuck, there’s a lodge park called Piperdam about 40 mins drive away, just outside Dundee 😊 you’re looking at about £500 for Fri-Mon in a self catering lodge.

JennyWreny · 17/08/2022 20:08

Premier Inn in Dundee or Glenrothes available. You could book it on the flexible rate with a view to cancelling if you find anything nearer St A?

Honeyroar · 17/08/2022 20:11

We stayed in the inn at Kingsbarn, which was a tiny village about 15 mins from St Andrews. It was lovely and had a fantastic restaurant (although that was four years ago and I think it might have changed hands since). It’s a tiny village with a lovely beach ten minutes walk away.
Hope he loves St Andrews as much as my stepson did. It’s pretty special.

How about this?

We've stayed there a few times and very nice spot plus v clean accommodation.

DotBall · 17/08/2022 20:32

Do stay in Anstruther, it’s lovely, and only a short drive from St Andrews!

Reusername · 18/08/2022 14:55

Thank you ladies - you are amazing

If you book something in Anstruther, be aware that the locals ( and most Scots ) pronounce it Ainster. So if you hear that, you are not in the wrong place 😬

ReviewingTheSituation · 18/08/2022 16:26

We stayed in Pittenween last Sept - along the coast from St Andrews. All the villages along there were lovely and would be a great base for a couple of days. We had a small Air BnB, and I seem to remember there was a decent amount of choice. I'd highly recommend the area as somewhere to visit anyway, and if you have to be in St Andrews to drop off then all the better. SA was an absolutely lovely city - lucky you, getting to go and visit for the next 3 years!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 18/08/2022 16:31

Congratulations to your son OP.

ajandjjmum · 18/08/2022 16:36

Have you tried Morton Pitmilly - we stayed there for the golf one year, and it was lovely. About a 15/20 minute drive though.

Reusername · 18/08/2022 18:13

Just tried Morton Pitmilly - all booked unfortunately. Thanks for the congrats. Also for the Anstruther tip! The search continues.....

Did you find somewhere @Reusername ? I have a premier inn room I need to cancel so we could arrange a time for me to do that if you needed to book still.
