UK holiday cottage near the sea for family and well behaved dog

NinaProudman2022 · 06/01/2022 16:26

Nice areas or nice dog friendly cottages/accommodation to look at in UK either thinking either Scotland, Northumberland or possibly Wales or Yorkshire please.

Simple tastes, nice walks from door step, beach, pub with good food with outdoor seating, shop and bakery. A few places to visit during stay 20 mins to an hour away.

Cottage must have 3 to 4 beds (either 1 ks, sk or zip link beds plus two single beds without footboards as travelling with two tall teens).

I thought I'd nailed this but it's no dogs :( Might be worth searching their site for other properties though.

There is a fantastic holiday home up in Portsoy in Scotland that ticks all your boxes plus has a hot tub. It's a converted church booked via Airbnb.

Will see if I can find the link.

we went to Pembrokeshire in 2020.
Yorkshire in 2021.

The thing I noticed was how wet it was (in both)
So I did some research and I was amazed at how much wetter the west coast of Wales is compared to the coast of Devon and Cornwall.
Given that they are both west coast, on Atlantic, so receive the same weather, and both are the coast, so not affected by a load of mountains from the direction the weather comes, wales is VERY wet in July/August compared to SW peninsula.
Yorkshire was just damp 24/7.

Nice walks, pubs etc in both, initially I assumed it was just a wet week, you get that with UK holidays, but no, it is the climate.

So if weather matters, go SW

They have different sized cottages. Not loads but the location is great. We are going for the second time this year.

Beadnell

Might be too big? We stayed here in October. Beadnell is lovely, great beach and walks and stuff nearby. Dog was happy too!

@Daisy829 We've been there! I agree - lovely location and fabulous cottages. Do they still have the treehouse?

WeatherwaxLives · 06/01/2022 17:21

The national trust has holiday cottages that are mostly dog friendly, there's some in the areas you're interested in here

DorotheaFrazil · 06/01/2022 17:21

Another vote for Beadnell Northumbria. We stayed in a lodge like this one www.northumbria-cottages.co.uk/property/turning-tide (I think the one we stayed in is no longer available for bookings). Location was great.

Here's the link to the place in Scotland.

I live in Wales and yes, it is really wet !
OP can I ask you nicely, if you do come to Wales, please don’t stay in a holiday cottage that would otherwise be a home. Our welsh communities here are being utterly destroyed, and homelessness is rising rapidly.
There are alternatives even though it means a bit more hunting around. Barns on farms, camping, Landmark trust properties and various other options.

TheContinentalHotel · 06/01/2022 17:43

The Bay at Filey. Direct access to the beach, lots of different types of properties and many allow dogs. There's a pool, pub and cafe on site, it's on the coastal bus route or a short drive to Filey/Scarborough/Bridlington

Have stayed here a few times;it's on the street directly behind the beach. There's lots of decent eateries plus a bakery around the corner. Also there's a beautiful chocolate shop that does nice cakes on the same street.

Daisy829 · 06/01/2022 17:54

@Nix32 yep! The cottage we stay at is right opposite. It’s such a beautiful location.

longtompot · 06/01/2022 18:03

I've not used these cottages but I follow them on Facebook and they look amazing. Some cottages are right on the beach and no charges for dogs www.eastrustoncottages.co.uk/?fbclid=IwAR3cXWuGa5SYj_Y5ZmqpLS9wPWJY_hF-EsepB5H7Ug5vNym6yc-xTcSQ10k

longtompot · 06/01/2022 18:10

It is in Norfolk though so might too far south for you.

Acunningruse · 06/01/2022 18:16

We stayed here in Beadnell in May, 3 bedrooms and brilliant location a stones throw from the fabulous pub.

We rented a cottage in Cornwall for 2 weeks in 2019 . 2 bedroom , 2 bathroom up to 2 dogs allowed. It was in a place called Lostwithiel .

GerbilCurse · 06/01/2022 20:44

Might fit the bill, not sure about pub option. We avoided eating out completely when we stayed, but got takeaway a couple of times. Dogs allowed, walks from the doorstep, beaches nearby (some within walking distance), 2 bedrooms, can be configured as twins or doubles. Snowdonia and castles nearby

Map showing average rainfall for UK:

Situation more nuanced than PP suggested. Don't think this map shows south-west coast of Wales (Pembrokeshire) to be significantly worse than Cornwall or north of Devon. North-west Wales, yes, certainly. But basically coastal regions in the west of the UK get more rain than eastern regions and that includes Cornwall.

NinaProudman2022 · 08/01/2022 13:01

Thanks all will have a look these suggestions.

Someone recommended Elie in Scotland which sounded perfect for us (walks, beaches, paddle boarding, nice foodie eateries nearby, deli, farm shop, pub with outdoor seating but can’t find any available accommodation that we like the look of that takes pets and doesn’t cost the earth.

Filey on the North Yorkshire coast is gorgeous and looks to fit the bill. If you google 5leys, they have lots of accommodation and you can search for dog friendly.

midsomermurderess · 14/01/2022 17:16

Elie is in the East Neuk in Fife. Maybe look at some other seaside villages there like Anstruther, Pittenweem or Crail.
