London meals on budget

Polarbears1 · 17/10/2021 22:56

Hello,

I've got a 2 night trip to london booked in a few weeks. As we'll probably be spending our money on fancy cocktails, a show, sightseeing costs etc we've figured we should reign in the spends on meals out.

Anyone any suggestions for some decent cheap eats/meals on budget (brekkie, lunch and tea)? Our hotel is in the city and it's got a mini fridge in the room. In the past we've grabbed a takeaway pizza and eaten that in our room but would welcome other options too Smile.

Thank you!

Where are you staying?

If you want to go really budget, get yoghurt and granola from a supermarket for breakfast and get stuff to fill a roll that you take with you for lunch.

Check out Timeout cheap eats if you don't want to do that.

Do the Hari Krishnas still do free lentil curry outside SOAS?

I'd get a salad/baguette from Pret for lunch or something from Itsu.

If you want delicious bargain pizzas you can’t beat Pizza Union. I went to their restaurant on Pentonville Rd last week, it’s a 5 minute walk from King’s Cross. Pizzas are around £6. Highly recommended.

BikeRunSki · 17/10/2021 23:34

There is a reasonably priced, and absolutely delicious, Quaker vegan cafe, slap bang across the road from Euston station.

Hoolihan · 17/10/2021 23:37

Depends where you're going/staying but there are always the chains to fall back on for lunch especially in the City e.g. Pret, Coco Mama, Itsu, Wasabi etc. You can eat cheaply and feel fancy at Brasserie Zedel in Piccadilly if happen to be in the area. Edgware Rd area for Middle Eastern food, there are several really good pizza places in Soho. Bone Daddies or Shoryu for amazing noodles for a tenner. China Town, curry from Drummond Street. London has so many options there's no need to eat takeaway pizza in your room!

How about trying the "restaurant" at the Indian YMCA:

Ignore me, it’s still closed.

Tons of good but cheap places to eat near your hotel. Head North or East though rather than South or West. There are good but cheap pizza places around Aldgate East (Pizza Union, Zia Lucia, Circle & Slice) as it's a big student area. Further east in Whitechapel you've got amazing Punjabi food including Tayyabs (a London institution). Or walk North up Commercial St towards Spitalfields and Brick Lane. Tons of food stalls / trucks /cafes, especially at the weekends. You can eat some amazing food for bargain prices. And of course there's always the famous beigel shops at the north end of Brick Lane.

Me and ds have spent many an hour in London making our way to our favourite M&S Simply Foods Wink There is a stunning one at Charing Cross, Westfield Stratford and near St Paul's Cathedral.Otherwise, we'll be in our favourite Prets! I can't decide between the huge one in Victoria opposite the Hamilton theatre or one that looks out over Trafalgar Square. HTH

@HundredMilesAnHour thanks for mentioning Pizza Union. I’ve never heard of it and it looks like a good cheap lunch.

bogeythefungusman · 20/10/2021 10:51

Madcats, was coming on to say Indian YMCA - they do breakfast, lunch and dinner. Place is always full of suits when we've been Grin

Premier Inn breakfasts? Kids eat free. Can fill up

Yes. These are great for a good, cheap lunch.
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2021 21:03

Personally, for dinner, I'd rather have nice food and skip a few cocktails. Brasserie Zedel food is cheap.

Dishoom pretty reasonably priced
Or maybe a chain like Cote
Or you could look for pre-theatre deals, if you don't mind eating early.
Pret for breakfast
Takeaway sarnie or something at lunch time and fruit
Nicer dinners

Original family business in Spitalfields will be near your hotel - also branch in Soho and Camden - would line your stomach nicely!

DockOTheBay · 31/10/2021 19:14

Go for cheap lunches, just sandwiches from somewhere or a takeaway from a market stall or pop up (Borough Market have some great stalls) and then splash out a bit more for dinner.

sleighride5 · 31/10/2021 19:20

2nd Pizza Union, My Old Place on Middlesex Street, Beigal Bakery on Brick Lane, Needos in Whitechapel (better than Tayabbs imho), Flat Iron (various locations), Wagamamas, Meat Liquor or Meat Market, Vietnamese on Kingsland Road, Itsu an hour befor closing does half price sushi.
