Looking for recommendations for a city/town to visit for 2 night. Me, DH and Dd 8. We love just wandering round exploring, nice quirky cafe/restaurants, shops, markets etc. DH loves shopping, I like shopping but especially independent shops and I love pretty aesthetics for photos. Bit of history always goes down well with DD too!

Not too worried about distance but we are in Somerset and have done Bristol, Bath etc several times.

As an example we used to live in Chester which was right up our street, our last city trip was York which we loved and we always have a brilliant time in London!

Lincoln

Lj8893 · 03/10/2021 18:01

Thankyou. Will have a look at Lincoln. This is why I asked as I would have never even thought about Lincoln otherwise!

If dc like history and space then Leicester is an option, if they like Indian food even better! National space centre is good (used to be able to get tickets through Tesco clubCard) m, there's a few museums too (free) then a short drive out is bosworth battlefield, then there's Richard III at the cathedral and there's other Richard III thing that I haven't been too. Huge market, around cathedral area there's independent shops and restaurants. Head to golden Mile for good Asian food, not your typical Indian restaurant fare. Hotels are usually quite reasonable as is eating out

Thankyou will also look at Leicester. She’s Not hugely into space but loves a museum! We spent 5 hours in the British museum in the summer, which bored me to death but she loved it Grin

Newcastle and can do Durham as part of same trip

CoronaPeroni · 03/10/2021 18:41

Towns we've enjoyed in the last few months are Rochester and Whitstable in Kent, Tavistock, Devon and Chichester, W.Sussex. And of course Brighton for quirky shops (The Lanes), promenade cafes and entertainment, and the Pavilion.

Lj8893 · 03/10/2021 18:50

When I said about distance I actually think Newcastle is a little too far for a short trip, although Newcastle and Durham are both on my to visit one day list!
DH has “ptsd” of childhood trips to Brighton with his Nan (not the best relationship there Confused) so will leave that one be, although I have a girly Brighton trip coming up soon as I love it!

Will look into the other suggestions though! Should have also mentioned seaside towns are popular with us, we love a good arcade and fish and chips! It will be in April though.

Warwick or Stratford Upon Avon

Philandbill · 03/10/2021 19:12

@superstar84 I thought of Lincoln too. We were there for two days in the summer and thought it was great. The cathedral is amazing and we found the Bomber Command museum very interesting. We have resolved to return.

Philandbill · 03/10/2021 19:13

How about Cardiff?

MrsFin · 03/10/2021 19:27

Cardiff
Brighton
Oxford
Birmingham

user1497787065 · 03/10/2021 19:28

What about Windsor?

Lj8893 · 03/10/2021 19:45

Thanks everyone.

Think I’ve narrowed it down to
Windsor
Stratford upon Avon
Cardiff

Forgot about Oxford, I’ve been before and loved it but DH and DD haven’t been, putting that on my list too!

Me and DH have been to Birmingham before and we had a brilliant time but it was the most surreal weekend of my life, it’s crazy there!!

If you’re thinking of going this year, Cardiff has a Christmas craft market too that starts early, like mid-Nov.

Lj8893 · 03/10/2021 19:54

No it will be April for DH birthday, but may squeeze in a Christmas market trip to Cardiff! Not too far from us so could even do 1 day.

If/when you go to Oxford, go to the Pitt-Rivers museum. The kids would love it.

Cactu · 03/10/2021 21:43

Edinburgh

ivykaty44 · 03/10/2021 21:46

Warwick

CommanderBurnham · 03/10/2021 21:54

Harrogate is lovely

MotherOfKitten · 03/10/2021 22:19

I was going to say Liverpool but I imagine you've been there if you used to live in Chester!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 03/10/2021 22:21

I see you've got your short list. I was going to suggest Shrewsbury.

Neighneigh · 03/10/2021 22:23

We were really surprised at how lovely Ely is - just a really pretty nice town to potter around for a couple of days. The cathedral is amazing and has a stained glass museum. There's a lovely walk along the riverside park, an incredible bookshop that you could be tempted to just hide in and stay overnight, and it's not far from Cambridge either so could make part of a trip there

Lj8893 · 04/10/2021 08:27

Oh some more great suggestions, thankyou.

Edinburgh is just too far, unless we could fly, I’ll have to look into that. As I would love to go there!

Yes, have been to Liverpool many many times and it’s still my favourite city.

Will look at Shrewsbury, Warwick, Harrogate and Ely.

I used to live in York and love Chester as well. I second Lincoln, it is so, so lovely. It's only tiny.

Also recommend Edinburgh too

Cambridge is really pretty as well
