Things to do in and around Whitby

We have a holiday booked in July. I am shameless starting this thread as I love Whitby so much and just want to talk about it. I am really looking forward to this and it feels like it's been a year since I looked forward to anything.

We go every year and tend to do the same things but it would be lovely to add a few different activities / excursions.

Here's what we do;
We always swim in the sea (not for everyone it's fecking freezing).
199 steps
Fossil beach (spend hours looking for fossils)
Scarborough swimming pool
Botham's bakery (daily)
Fish and chips (also daily)
Arcade
Visit other places (Saltburn, Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes)

Any other recommendations...

Yes the Dracula experience is so bad it's good.

Cleveland Way Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay. Pint in the pub then bus back. It's a gorgeous walk and the children could easily manage it now.

Srirachachacha · 08/05/2021 15:23

Have a look at CBK - about an hour away I think but they do some really cool activities.

Ormally · 08/05/2021 15:23

I was thinking of the YHA cafe which is open to non-guests, Lifelong.

A relative has moved to near Saltburn by the Sea. We’re not very close so I wouldn’t impose an overnight stay but I could justify seeing them as part of a longer holiday. Would an Airbnb in Whitby be a good base?

LuckyLuckyWoman · 08/05/2021 15:24

Dotties tea room in Staithes for a scone, absolutely delicious

katienana · 08/05/2021 15:27

Sandsend beach, the village is just idyllic.
Always Hadleys for fish and chips.

rarzy · 08/05/2021 15:30

I'd love to go, where are you staying can ai ask eg air bnb?

DeathAndTaxis · 08/05/2021 15:33

Following for ideas for our Whitby trip soon 🙂.

We always book with Ingrid Flute. They are excellent. We have an apartment on the west cliff which in my experience is the best place to be. Parking and getting in / out the town can be tricky but west cliff not a problem and lovely walk into the town. Plus arcade is just far away enough. Smile

I would say absolutely. We love Saltburn but prefer to be in Whitby. Probably best of both worlds if you don't want to descend on the relative but would like to meet up for a day. The pier arcade, crazy golf and the up hill tram (not sure this is technically what it's called) are our favourites in Saltburn.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. It's a mighty fine spreadsheet's worth. Can. Not. Wait!

I just love everything about it

@lastordersmaura you must be me in an alternative reality. Here's to Whitby! We have a sea view this year. If I am not thinking about something else, I am planning our stay. I don't even care about the weather.

There's The Moor Centre which is a drive inland, with walks with interesting sculptures dotted around, a kid friendly interactive museum, interesting really steep terraced garden, cafe, shop and good adventure playground and outside space for running around and picnics. Bit of a drive from whitby but your age kids will love it I think.

KineticSand · 08/05/2021 18:40

Just checked, it's actually only a 26min drive from whitby!

Spent a day there last year for first time and going back this year for three days as we liked it so much. Following thread with interest. My favourite but was while DH and kids trekked up to the Abbey, I sat between the shops and the sea, on the cliff/pavement and just enjoyed the sun and watched the boats/people. Loved it.
