Things to do in and around Whitby

SummerHouse · 08/05/2021 14:33

We have a holiday booked in July. I am shameless starting this thread as I love Whitby so much and just want to talk about it. I am really looking forward to this and it feels like it's been a year since I looked forward to anything.

We go every year and tend to do the same things but it would be lovely to add a few different activities / excursions.

Here's what we do;
We always swim in the sea (not for everyone it's fecking freezing).
199 steps
Fossil beach (spend hours looking for fossils)
Scarborough swimming pool
Botham's bakery (daily)
Fish and chips (also daily)
Arcade
Visit other places (Saltburn, Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes)

Any other recommendations...

Llama trekking, you take a llama for a walk

ShowOfHands · 08/05/2021 14:38

Can you tell me more about the fossil beach? We are going soon.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 08/05/2021 14:43

Sherlocks cafe, top of Flowergate. They regularly put scones in the oven, so fresh and warm.

Sandsend is nice for the beach cafes, and maybe a stroll on the beach.

Goathland if you are or were a Heartbeat fan.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/05/2021 14:43

I second Sherlock's. It's lovely!

Tambora · 08/05/2021 14:44

Ooh - following with interest as it's somewhere I've always wanted to go and I've never been.

kennelmaid · 08/05/2021 14:51

You can go "Walking With Sheep" at the Sheep Sanctuary in Tranmire www.sheepsanctuary.com.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 08/05/2021 14:55

the Cleveland way is a great coastal walk. Start at the Abbey, walk to Robin Hood's Bay, bus back?

Right. You absolutely have to check the tide times. If the tide is in, the fossil beach is not there! Wear shoes with good grips. It's mostly rock but lots of slippy green stuff on it. It's like another world is revealed when the tide is out.

You get to it by turning left if you are facing the bottom of the 199 steps. If you go the path way you pass a fish smoking house which is worth a quick stop.

We always find a fossil or two but we are there for hours. I just love it!

I have always wanted to do this. Young boys have put us off in previous years but they are 8 and 10 now so they are ready. Worst case (or perhaps best) scenario, I am going to ditch the family and do this on my own.

Nymr steam train from Whitby to as far as you want to go
Yorkshire water park outdoor events but more towards Scarborough
Whitby museum and the park it's in
Wander around the Abbey and EH do put events on
How old are DC?

lifelongfrugaleer · 08/05/2021 15:03

Boat trip
Crabbing off the Quay near the swing bridge

bentleydrummle · 08/05/2021 15:05

Absolutely love this area. Walk from boggle hole YHA to Robin Hoods Bay. And Falling Floss tea room. The steam train is brilliant too.

Umbongoumbongo999 · 08/05/2021 15:05

Do you have DC? If staying at whitby for a few days or more I would probably plan a trip to Scarborough (north beach and Peasholm Park). Maybe sealife centre or the aqua park (which is really quite lovely and a good bet for dcs for a rainy or grey day).

We also like Pannet park in whitby for a walk through the gardens and maybe take a picnic.

bentleydrummle · 08/05/2021 15:05

Falling Foss sorry

DSs are 8 and 10. And brilliant steam train suggestion. They will love that thank you.

Take one of the day trip boats out to sea was always fun. We’ve done the railway before and enjoyed it.

lifelongfrugaleer · 08/05/2021 15:10

They might like the captain Cook museum on grape lane.

I've never heard of Foss. Going there next.

There used to be rowing boat hire at the river in ruswarp too.

SummerHouse · 08/05/2021 15:14

Row boats is perfect. We have been meaning to check out Ruswarp so that fits perfectly.

Look up Hidden Horizons (can’t do the link) they do fossil hunting, dinosaur footprint tours and stargazing around Whitby and Scarborough, they are passionate about their subjects and aimed towards children.

Also folk night at Ye Old Dolphin in Robin Hoods Bay on Friday night, sometimes it’s great, sometimes not, it depends on who turns up. The food there is good too. Also in the bay is a ghost tour, fabulous local storytelling.

Ormally · 08/05/2021 15:16

Yes to Boggle Hole - go for a coffee and snack there. I knew nothing of it for years even though knowing Whitby.

Botham's. Mmmmmmmmm. May have ordered lockdown packages from here (££ on the delivery) but it's not the same.

Some pretty good geocaching to do around there although the phone reception was variable for some locations, which can leave you a bit stuffed.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 08/05/2021 15:16

Second boat tour from Whitby harbour. If you go on the Black Pearl, they have a pirate! :)

LastOrdersMaura · 08/05/2021 15:18

I love
The Museum at the top of the hill
The boat trips
Staithes
Scarborough
Flamingo Land
The utterly crap Dracula musuem
The abbey
Bothams bakery
Walking around the shops
The old school bus
Goat land
Visiting York on the way back.
I just love everything about it

lifelongfrugaleer · 08/05/2021 15:19

I boggle hole is it the yha cafe or is there another. All my years going to Whitby I've not being
