UK Family summer holiday teens and well behaved dog

Spring2021 · 05/04/2021 17:57

Looking for accommodation for a summer family holiday in UK 5-7 days either last week in August or last week in July. I know options are limited to what is available and we want to avoid the crowds and madness of Devon and Cornwall (or anywhere else thats mad and likely to be completely heaving) and avoid driving two far south. So was thinking Scotland, Northumberland, Wales or Yorkshire. I have had a look and can’t see anywhere available, affordable that I like but we mainly go abroad so I could be missing something . Does anyone have any recommendations for areas and places to stay please.

We have two teens (one male and one female) so need 2 or 3 bedrooms ideally with a king size bed and at least two twin beds.

We like going for walks and exploring the area and would like to be in walking distance of somewhere with a nice pub or restaurant with outdoor seating to eat out at once or twice.

Thanks

East Coast of Scotland would be good in August as the schools go back this year around 18/08.

Is it a air B and B type place you’d like rather than a hotel?

CongealedCrags · 05/04/2021 21:34

Tenby.

Spring2021 · 05/04/2021 22:29

We are after a cottage house/type of accommodation with having the dog.

Can you suggest any accommodation in Tenby assume that is Wales and or the East Coast of Scotland and where in particular on the east coast of Scotland? Thanks

There's a great FB page called 'Dog Friendly Holiday Accommodation' where you can post basically what you've put here, and people with cottages will reply if they've got availability.

Tenby is great but there are lots of beautiful places on the Gower peninsula in Wales.
Lots of properties are dog friendly - just search on places like cottages like below

We've got two weeks with ddog in the new forest ina caravan, took what we could get!

We recently booked a dog friendly cottage near the sea in Dorset for August - we figured it would be near enough to Cornwall to hopefully visit family but not in the thick of it where it's all booked up and will be rammed (it was last summer!) We found plenty of places available. Just the prices are somewhat hiked.

Yes Air B & B or similar rather than a hotel.
I'd start with westcoastcottages.wales/ on Airbnb

North Wales has a very good choice of activities and accommodation.
It has busy and tranquil quiet places too
Some ideas here

How about this
www.panoramacottages.co.uk

Lots of teen type activities in Llangollen, good food etc

Funf · 06/04/2021 09:11

We stayed here one winter before lock down, it was great but expensive but you do get what you pay for. Its in the middle of the town 5 mins walk to the beach and it has its own parking which is vital in Tenby

Some stuff we did

This was also nice but possibly too remote

Barmouth.
Great central place with a nice beach and stuff a short drive away

chestnutmares · 06/04/2021 09:17

Aviemore is great if your teens like outdoor activities, we love it there!

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 10/04/2021 21:46

Tenby is lovely but was ridiculously busy at Easter.
We stayed at St Andrew's forest lodges last summer (hoseasons) ... lovely dog friendly accommodation with a hot tub and a good base for seeing that bit of Scotland. Don't remember there being pubs nearby but was only a short drive in to st andrews.

Spring2021 · 19/04/2021 18:25

We can’t find anywhere we like that is dog friendly near the coast with a KS bed (for us), two single beds for the teens within budget (just under 1K for the accommodation) with a decent looking pub or restaurant (with some outdoor seating) in either Scotland or Wales.

Any final suggestions?

We could either go the last week in August or last week in July? Thanks

FB site called Dog friendly holidays. Try joining and putting in your requirements but you might struggle at this stage to get coastal, plus superking for a week at £1k.

Spring2021 · 20/04/2021 08:22

Yes I have been on dog friendly holidays, Sykes, coastal retreats, lots of other cottages.com, Air BnB, Holiday lettings, Dioni, some similar sounding cottage sites, Coolstays, Trip Adviser but the only ones that look nice and have some availability are with VRBO some of the accommodation looks lovely and some are in budget but the reviews of VRBO are terrible.

OP posts:
rookiemere · 20/04/2021 08:31

Do you mean the reviews of VRBO as a provider or the property reviews? If the former then just ignore it's purely a handling company.

MrsMackesy · 20/04/2021 08:51

It might be that this year you have to be more open-minded about what you like, the bed size eg double not king, proximity to the coast etc. Like you say, there is very little availability, (and some shameful price-hiking), so it might be a case of 'at least we're getting away' rather than finding somewhere perfect - or would you rather stay at home in those circumstances? What happens to your dog when you go abroad as usual? I know we want to take our pets with us in the UK but not taking your dog would open up more options.

We have a similar problem in that our usual summer pet-friendly place is booked up in all the school holidays until next year by people who would much rather, and usually, be abroad. Our other favourite place has been closed since the very start of the epidemic. Everywhere else suitable we've found is booked up or price-hiked to the extent we would not be willing to pay it, morally - 300% in some cases. It's very frustrating but we hope some will cancel nearer the time if they get the chance to go abroad instead.

Spring2021 · 20/04/2021 09:06

Thanks. We have a super king at home and could manage with a king but we are both very tall and on the large side so a king is a compromise.

Dog is well behaved and usually goes to the dog walkers but he’s getting older and has been spoiled with us both working from home so would really like to take him in this country.

We have seen a couple of places that looked ok but didn’t fancy the surrounding areas. We used to enjoy camping but I really don’t fancy communal bathrooms in this climate.
