UK Family summer holiday teens and well behaved dog

Spring2021 · 05/04/2021 17:57

Looking for accommodation for a summer family holiday in UK 5-7 days either last week in August or last week in July. I know options are limited to what is available and we want to avoid the crowds and madness of Devon and Cornwall (or anywhere else thats mad and likely to be completely heaving) and avoid driving two far south. So was thinking Scotland, Northumberland, Wales or Yorkshire. I have had a look and can’t see anywhere available, affordable that I like but we mainly go abroad so I could be missing something . Does anyone have any recommendations for areas and places to stay please.

We have two teens (one male and one female) so need 2 or 3 bedrooms ideally with a king size bed and at least two twin beds.

We like going for walks and exploring the area and would like to be in walking distance of somewhere with a nice pub or restaurant with outdoor seating to eat out at once or twice.

Thanks

My other suggestion would be hiring a campervan with facilities or glamping but would that work for very tall folk?

MrsMackesy · 20/04/2021 09:12

You could take a tent for more room for the teens?

rookiemere · 20/04/2021 09:22

Is there any compromise on the coastal element? Would two singles work instead of a king sized bed ?
Couple of reasonable possibilities on Booking.com but the coast bit looks to be tricky at this stage. Some nice options in Scottish country side but walking distance to pub or Alston on border of Lake District is very dog friendly and nice walking.

chestnutmares · 20/04/2021 18:49

Scotland in last week of August might be a bit cheaper as the schools will have gone back.

Spring2021 · 20/04/2021 22:42

Tried some places in Scotland but couldn’t even find anywhere coastal that looked nice there. I get hay fever and have asthma and feel better by the coast and on flattish walks rather than in the country with lots of uphill walks.

Norfolk? Suffolk? There are some naice bits of coastal Lincolnshire?

rookiemere · 21/04/2021 11:56

Shropshire is lovely and generally pretty flat.

Thanks we live up north and ideally wanted no more than a 3 hour drive if poss.

www.booking.com/Share-ngx9Ga

I thought you had me stumped OP but I think this fits all the requirements. No idea what the area is like though.

ClarrieGrundy · 21/04/2021 13:02

I’m afraid you will struggle with getting somewhere like that in Scotland. The whole of the central belt will be tipping out to the countryside and there is just not enough accommodation.

My tip would be to try to find local cottage companies in the area that you want and then call to see if they have any odd times free, or cancellations.

I tend to have more luck there than the national ones.

OP,
I have a lovely dog friendly historic holiday let in East Sussex, 1 mile from the coast, stunning views, luxurious fixtures with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, one superking bedroom, and one with good sized twin beds (small doubles).
We have a fully enclosed garden for a dog, with a wood fired hot tub.
Pub and farm shop within walking distance .....
It is booking up fast but l still have 2 available weeks left in August....
PM me for more details if you are interested...

Sorrty just noticed you didn't want a long drive! Good luck

Dragongirl10 · 21/04/2021 13:11

Sorry not sorrty!

Knitwit99 · 21/04/2021 13:16

Kilconquhar Castle near Élie in Fife? Big spacious holiday cottages, dogs allowed, big beds, bar and restaurant on site.
5 minute drive to the beach, 15 minute cycle, whatever. There are lots of lovely coastal villages nearby.
Scottish kids are back in school mid August and the other main visitors I've seen there are American golfers so I guess they won't be there either this summer

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/04/2021 13:18

Sorry-now see no availability-I thought there was when I looked!!!

rookiemere · 21/04/2021 13:34

Or quite a lot that might fit the bill on cottages.com. This one www.cottages.com/cottages/curlew-cottage-uk12820?child=2&nights=7&range=3&start=23-7-2021&adult=2&infant=0 looks suitable.

Fanceeepant · 24/04/2021 10:00

We have stayed in this one before it was amazing a really nice break.

RuggeryBuggery · 24/04/2021 10:02

I think it could be budget?

RuggeryBuggery · 24/04/2021 10:04

I recently managed to book somewhere on east coast of Scotland around Cullen area end of august, but there wasn’t much left and just over your budget (£1200) but we do need to sleep 5

SmurfetteBlue · 24/04/2021 10:12

Try westwalesholidaycottages.co.uk

We use it often

Spring2021 · 24/04/2021 10:58

Thanks all will look through these. Either I find something gorgeous in a less desirable area, only has a double bed or worse still two doubles, I am so fussy but have left it late due to health issues.

www.pittenweemproperties.com/property/east-neuk-haven/ Three bedrooms near the sea in anstruther, one king size, pet allowed. Nothing beautiful but it does fit the requirements and is £728

This one is in crail which is a very lovely village on the Fife coastal path.

Spring2021 · 25/04/2021 17:35

Thanks Icannever I finally got sorted 🤞 just waiting on a confirmation email with a lovely property in Fife with all our requirements (slightly above budget) but the only properties left in Wales matching our requirements were well over budget and either were far from ideal looking very dated, not in the best location and or didn’t have the best reviews.
