Eating outdoors with baby

What do you guys think is a suitable temperature to sit and eat outside with a 10mo? MIL is persistent that once Easter lockdown rules change she wants a picnic outside but I think it’s going to bee too cold for my baby boy to sit and eat outside. I’m not feeding him in his pram, so he will have to sit on a mat or his travel high chair and his bib won’t fit over his coat. TIA

How can we answer that? We have no idea where you live and what the weather forecast might be on the day you plan to visit! We have had a glorious few days here in Scotland and we ate outside. But it could well be snowing next week.

Greenrubber · 22/03/2021 18:09

As long as they are wearing weather appropriate clothes they will be fine

You can always take a flask of hot food like soup or porridge for him if its on the chilly side

Teetreat · 22/03/2021 18:10

I do think you're being overly fussy. Wrap him up warm, have him on your lap and drape him with a towel if your actually feeding him and not just giving a bit of finger food. The whole point of babies is that they are portable. Relax and have a nice time.

"The whole point of babies is that they are portable"

Not sure that's the whole point of them Grin but yes, you're overthinking this.

Teetreat · 22/03/2021 18:13

Lol, no perhaps not 😂

whyamidoingthistomyself · 22/03/2021 18:13

Clothes help . Choose the right clothes and all should be fine

DaffodilSunshine · 22/03/2021 18:13

Take non messy food and don't bother with a bib. Or just tuck a muslin in his coat for a bit of protection

mynameiscalypso · 22/03/2021 18:14

So long as it's not raining or too windy, anything is fair game in my book. Does he need a bib if you're eating outside?

WisteriaSuperior · 22/03/2021 18:16

I think YABVU. A baby can be outside in any weather as long as they are dressed for it accordingly, how do Eskimo babies survive if this wasn't the case? In the the sunshine it's quite warm already. I'll be trying to go outside with my newborn baby as much as possible once it's born, suitably dressed of course, 4 weeks to go.

^^ yes enjoy how compact and transportable they are. Durable little things, as long as you've got layers they'll be fine. Is this a first born?

NaturalStudy · 22/03/2021 18:19

Do you never take your baby out for a walk? The temperature is the same whether you are walking with the pram or sitting eating some lunch. Put a snow suit on the baby and plonk him on a picnic rug.

notacooldad · 22/03/2021 18:20

Als ong as it isnt a hhrrjcan or similar z d he us dressed appropriately i think it sounds like a great idea!.
If it's cold wrap him up,if it's hot undress him so he is comfortable. That's tbe rule of thumb I used for my two!
It worked well!
Enjoy the outdoors!

FelicityPike · 22/03/2021 18:28

I think he’ll be fine.....Biscuit

notacooldad · 22/03/2021 18:33

Ha! Oh what a mess my touch typing without glasses is!!
🙄😂😂

Fivemoreminutes1 · 22/03/2021 18:34

If his bib won’t fit over his coat, either get one a few sizes too big which he can grow into, or use a plastic bag as a makeshift bib.

Heyha · 22/03/2021 18:34

Sorry OP you're going to have to think of another excuse to get out of seeing your MIL...unless the weather really is wet or blowing a gale.

Did this a lot last year with DD same sort of age when the rules were outdoors only, just picked food that makes crumbs rather than splodgy mess. Take plenty of clothes options and wipes.

HelloViroids · 22/03/2021 18:35

Why can’t you feed him in his pram? I’ve been going for walks with friends (one on one) and regularly stop on a bench and give my 8 month old his lunch if it falls over meal time - rather that than screechy hungry baby!

DuggeeHugPlease · 22/03/2021 18:36

Yes I'd agree that from end of March/early April it's unlikely to be too cold to sit outside. Rain or really strong wind would put me off (but I wouldn't want to sit out in that weather either) but temperature should be fine with the right clothing.

DuggeeHugPlease · 22/03/2021 18:37

Also if you really can't manage feeding him outside then meet for a later lunch and feed him first. Then he can just have a snack in the pram while you have a picnic.

Bimblybomeyelash · 22/03/2021 18:41

You sound like you don’t like your MIL.

Why can’t he eat in his pram? Or
sat on your lap? People up and down the country are going to be eating outdoors at Easter, because it is the first time for many of us to properly see family. Your DS won’t be the only precious Baby getting crumbs in his pram.

Same4Walls · 22/03/2021 18:47

It honestly just comes across that you're looking for a million excuses not to meet up.

DS is my first and was about 3 months old when the first lockdown began. He's spend over 90% of his life being fed outside in parks, his pram on benches, bandstands and even bus stops in the rain. Thus far he's still alive and kicking inspite of only ever eating inside a restaurant or pub less than a handful of times.

As long as hes appropriately dressed he will come to no harm.

UnbeatenMum · 22/03/2021 18:49

I have been feeding my toddler outside from time to time all through the winter, although we're in the south. Below about 5 degrees it's a bit cold for self feeding because they need gloves but you can still spoon something warm in or give a pouch or a bottle. I have two older children so it enabled us to get out for a couple of hours and them to get some fresh air and exercise.

ScarfaceCwaw · 22/03/2021 18:50

Just dress the baby appropriately, plonk them on the ground and give them some finger food FGS. Babies are versatile and portable. There's no need to make such heavy weather (arf) of this.

Rainallnight · 22/03/2021 18:51

Is he your first?
