Eating outdoors with baby

What do you guys think is a suitable temperature to sit and eat outside with a 10mo? MIL is persistent that once Easter lockdown rules change she wants a picnic outside but I think it’s going to bee too cold for my baby boy to sit and eat outside. I’m not feeding him in his pram, so he will have to sit on a mat or his travel high chair and his bib won’t fit over his coat. TIA

I often fed DS outside all of last year if it was dry - sometimes in his snow suit when he was small and I just spoon fed him some slop and when he was a bit bigger a got a bigger bib to go over his coat and he ate his usual finger foods

What do you think parents of babies did last lockdown!? We were having picnics in the park every day we from when we were allowed! He will be fine, just put a coat on him

Crimblecrumble1990 · 22/03/2021 19:11

Maybe forget the bib and wash his coat when you get in?

Pfb? Of course it's fine for babies to eat outside at Easter, or course it's fine to feed in his pram, just Chuck a muslin round his neck if a bib doesn't fit. The entire post is a complete non issue.

I think it’s fine. In the last lockdown I fed my baby quite a few times in my parent’s garden. I fed her sitting up in the pram. If it was cold / windy she wore a pramsuit and woolly hat.

My twins have eaten outside pretty much since newborn thanks to lockdown. We fed them outside in December with padded snowsuits on and sat on a picnic blanket. We spoon fed them warm pasta from a thermos jar. Easier than finger feeding as I didn’t want them getting their snowsuits dirty as they take ages to dry.

If it's not too cold for you, it's not too cold for the baby. Remember, the baby is sitting still regardless of whether you're walking or stopped for a picnic, it's you who will notice a bigger difference. The bib isn't a big deal, just use a plastic apron style one rather than one with sleeves and choose practical foods, but coats can go in the wash after of necessary.

Plus, he'll get to see his family and get to know his grandparents, which I really look forward to for my covid baby.

I gave my 13 month old breakfast at the park this morning, it was 8 degrees. Happily had his porridge and a banana while sitting in his pram, then got himself covered in mud before eating some of that too. He regularly has snacks or meals when out and about (and has been all winter long), otherwise we'd never be able to go anywhere (he eats every 90 min or less at the moment as he's just started walking and is starving!).

As long as you've got a good outdoor suit (shell type for warmer weather, puffier for colder), a nice hat and lots of layers, it'll be fine. Sandwiches are a good portable food if you're not into the idea of taking a thermos.

If it's warm enough to have a picnic, it's warm enough to have a picnic.

I apply what I call the 'me test' i.e. would it bother me? I might be worried about temperature with a newborn but not a near 1 yr old.

ThePricklySheep · 22/03/2021 20:03

Give him something non messy like a ham sandwich. Smile

Helbelle75 · 22/03/2021 20:20

We had a picnic outside with our 10 month old last week.
She was fine and really enjoyed it. We put her in her booster seat on the floor and made sure she had warm clothes on. She got a bit messy, but everything washes.
She's been out in all weathers as there's nowhere to go other than the blooming park, so she's used to being outside. We have some lovely snowsuits for her and I'm sure all of the fresh air is good for her.

I think your baby will be fine, OP.

My DS is 10 months and I often feed him outside. It gives us more freedom to go places on our daily walk.

Practical suggestion if you're worried... what time does your DS eat lunch? Mine usually eats at 11:45 but would happily eat as early as 11:30. If yours is the same, could you feed at home then have the picnic a little later, say 13:00, which is a perfectly reasonable time for adults? Then you'd just need to take some snacks and water for DS.

NannyR · 22/03/2021 21:21

He'll be fine - if he's properly dressed for the weather (which could be anything from snow to 20 degrees in April!), he won't be any colder sitting on a rug than he would sitting in his pram going for a walk.
If his bib really won't fit over his coat and you don't want the coat to get dirty, you could put an oversize t-shirt over it or put a tea towel round his neck secured with a clothes peg.

imalmostthere · 22/03/2021 21:23

Easter 2019 was so hot I got severely sunburnt. No reason he won't be able to eat outside unless an ice age happens between now and then.

Miscarriage39 · 23/03/2021 08:51

If it’s chilli, wrap him up. If you want to cover his clothes, tie a big muslin over his coat. He’ll be absolutely fine!

MrsTophamHat · 23/03/2021 09:01

As PP have said it will most likely be fine. We had the paddling pool out in April last year.

Bibs aren't essential, just don't take things that are likely to stain and then wash the clothes later.

shouldistop · 27/03/2021 20:41

Really? Have you not taken him outside all autumn or winter? You just dress him appropriately.

Dustyhedge · 28/03/2021 17:54

I’ve got a lovely photo of my just 1 year old having a lockdown bbq this time last year. Definitely no issues with eating outside on a nice day. I assume your mil isn’t suggesting going on a freezing day and stripping the baby to a nappy. A picnic is very normal with small children.
