Things to bring back form Scotland?

TrueBlueBabyILoveYou · 02/03/2021 09:00

We have a 2-week trip to Scotland. I am planning on spending some money up there on ourselves and Christmas shopping (apologies!)

We are going to Edinburgh, the west coast, and isles and Pitlochry.

What is good to bring back from Scotland in terms of clothing, other stuff, and food? I am not looking for souveneirs.

Stornaway black pudding.

Cashmere- Pringles

Go to House of Bruar, Blair Atholl- near Pitlochry food in the restaurant is amazing and there are lots of things to buy. I bought a beautiful wool rug last time I was there. Their own brand of whisky and honey called Stag’s Breath and they do have miniatures.Tablet. Smoked salmon, duck etc can be ordered and posted later. Smoked salmon pate mmmm.

Pottery some beautiful pottery. One brand in particular I can remember the name my sister has some and they did sell it at House of Bruar. It has Scottish scenes and a large ashet has a salmon.

Look out for Caithness glass especially in antique shops.
Tartan, Harris tweed, Arran jumpers.
A spurtle for making porridge.

Haha Mrsjayy OP will be convinced about House of Bruar now.

Square sausage
Knitwear

Harris gin is gorgeous, very unique.

emmathedilemma · 02/03/2021 09:50

It's whisky in Scotland, Whiskey is Irish!
A lot of cashmere on sale is made in China so check your labels if you want authentic local produce.
House of Bruar makes me cringe, it's such a twee tourist trap.
Avoid all tourist tat shops on the Royal Mile apart from Royal Mile Whiskies which is very good for something a bit different to what you find in supermarkets.
There's lot of gin distilleries popping up around the country too.

I think House of Bruar will be right up the Op street all that knitwear !

BingBongToTheMoon · 02/03/2021 09:51

House of Bruar is made for people like the OP.
Tourist tat at crazy prices.

House of Bruar is one my favourite places for a day trip. Lovely scenery, nice shopping experience and a good lunch. I love it.
ApolloandDaphne · 02/03/2021 12:27

What you need to know about House of Bruar is to head to the discount place at the back to get all the great bargains.

Furrybootsyecomfy · 02/03/2021 12:32

@Redsquirrel5
Are you thinking of Highland Stoneware? It’s lovely but a bit £££

Kaboomba · 02/03/2021 12:40

Depending on the islands your going to, Harris Gin is delicious, Aaran Cheese (ginger is my fave), some Burns memorabilia.

RatherLostPenguins · 02/03/2021 17:59

Heathergems jewellery in Pitlochry. You can buy online from them, but if everything is open then you can go to the shop and viewing gallery to see how they make their items and I think seeing stuff in person before buying is so much nicer, especially because no two things they make are exactly the same. We had been planning a trip before lockdown so I hope we can go soon.

That’s it Highland Stoneware. Yes, it is pricey but beautiful. I have loved it for about 40 years. I bought my sister and her husband some mugs as she loves it. The salmon plates are amazing.

We don’t know what OPs budget is but it is lovely to just go and look at.

EcoCustard · 02/03/2021 21:44

Aberdeen Buttery, tablet, macaroni pie, pineapple tarts, plain loaf and Strathaven toffee Grin

Redsquirrel5 · 02/03/2021 21:50

I love stopping at House of Bruar. I have a 300 mile drive to see my sisters and it is a great place to stop for a late lunch. Staff are fabulous, great clean toilets, Vegan daughter can always find something and I can fuel myself for the rest of the long but beautiful drive up. We can have a browse and feel refreshed.

I bought a beautiful, woven blanket for £15.

Teakind · 02/03/2021 21:52

Square sausage! And Tunnucks tea cakes : )

grafittiartist · 02/03/2021 21:55

Argh- look what you've done now!
I have to make some tablet tomorrow! Yum

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 02/03/2021 21:57

Some nice local gin maybe. You'd be better checking out little crafty type shops when you're there rather than planning, IMO.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 02/03/2021 22:01

Gawd. House of Bruar is expensive. I love it but the prices always make me gasp.

BuiltForComfortNotForSpeed · 02/03/2021 22:10

Orkney based Orla Gorie and Ortak make beautiful jewelry. Both have websites too.

Einszwei · 02/03/2021 22:11

Fruit pudding...perfect when sliced and fried for breakfast! It can be hard to find nowdays though.

BuiltForComfortNotForSpeed · 02/03/2021 22:12
  • Ola Gorie - l should have spell checked!
Remona · 02/03/2021 22:23

I’m surprised at how many people are recommending House of Bruar. It’s worth a look as a one off and they do have a huge variety of stock but my word, you need deep pockets or a credit card without a limit.

I’m a regular visitor to that part of Perthshire and Edinburgh too, but I can’t say there are lots of things you’d need to buy when you’re there. You can get most things south of the border these days. Certainly Pitlochry and Edinburgh have loads of touristy shops selling the usual tourist fodder at high prices.

Tablet is good. Lots of shops round Pitlochry stock small bars of Aberfeldy tablet at about £1 a bar. It’s home made and is the best tablet around.

Whisky is definitely worth it. The distilleries are good for an afternoon out. There are a couple in Pitlochry but the Dewar’s distillery in Aberfeldy has a great and very modern visitor centre with a good cafe too. On your way there you can call into The Highland Chocolatier in Grandtully. Superb chocolate but with a price tag to match.

If you’re into crafting (knitting/sewing) there’s a fabulous shop called Karelia House at Keltneyburn near Kenmore. The shop has a good selection and there’s also a great cafe there that does amazing home made soups and sandwiches. While you’re in the area go into Kenmore itself to see the beautiful Loch Tay.

Jaffajam · 02/03/2021 22:28

Tattie scones, square sausage, Ayrshire bacon. I have genuinely not seen a Scotch pie for YEARS (I'm in England but have lots of family in Scotland).

Lovelydovey · 02/03/2021 22:30

Caramel logs
