Cottage in the Lake District for 13

BIL and MIL have decided to have a shared 40th/70th birthday celebration in the Lake District in May half term next year.

I said I’d help look but I’m struggling to find anywhere suitable.

We need accommodation for 13. Mainly couples but one single and MIL would share a twin with our 8yo (who will be the only child there).

Needs to be within walking distance of a pub and near the start of walks. Nobody wants to drive to start a walk.

A group of cottages would probably be better as we’ll be a mix of people who are quiet and loud.

No particular budget. BIL and MIL are happy to spend a bit more for the right place.

This is in North Wales
www.panoramacottages.co.uk
But my point is you should be able to find some very close to each other like these are.

MinnieMountain · 16/02/2021 18:50

Do you work for the north Wales tourist board Funf? Because that’s clearly no help whatsoever.

Try Lakeland Village in Newby Bridge.
Lots of cottages, pub on site and you can walk to the railway and then get the steamer up Windermere to Ambleside.

Some walks start near by but I think you will have to drive to get to the start of most walks .

The Cartmel peninsula is fab for walking

Lingholme thelingholmestate.co.uk/ is gorgeous and lots of different types of accommodation within the grounds. The on-site cafe is lovely, Catbells is practically in the back garden, the alpacas are fun, you can take a boat over to Keswick and there are pubs within walking distance. We’ve stayed in the apartments and in a couple of the cottages. All really lovely.

Funf · 17/02/2021 06:21

minniemountain.
My point is the link is a collection of cottages next to each other so you could rent them all, should be able to find similar in the lakes?
Might be worth contacting the local tourist office if they are open as they will no doubt know of a large place or some one who has some close together.
I don't work for the tourist board but I feel we all too often head for the same places when the UK has lots more to see.

Wow, that's rude. I can see why it's been suggested, similar vibe with access to walks etc.
MinnieMountain · 17/02/2021 07:17

Apologies if I came across the wrong way, but my OP clearly says the Lake District and it’s not my birthday(s).

Thank you for the helpful replies.

Would you better off looking at the smaller youth hostels? Elterwater for example.

MinnieMountain · 17/02/2021 07:28

I did think of that @Toomanyparsnips but most of us would find the mattresses too uncomfortable. Although taking over Elterwater youth hostel would be cool- it’s a lovely spot.

We stayed at 'a corner of Eden' once. It's quite pricy but very lovely. The accommodation is spread over three cottages and there are great walks from the doorstep. There is a pub in walking distance over fields but it's not that great. Apparently there's a better one in a nearby village which might be walking distance, not sure.

Lanique · 17/02/2021 07:33

Btw it's in Cumbria but not strictly Lake District - so may not be your thing.

We have used this site before for large parties

Tottergill Farm is lovely and has walks in an RSPB reserve right from the doorstep. There’s a great pub which takes about 20 minutes to walk to.
There’s also Bank Ground Farm which has lots of local walks. There isn’t a pub, but a cafe and restaurant within shouting distance.

That estate looks GORGEOUS! Have bookmarked it.

Wow that was a rude response to Funf, whose contribution acknowledged that it was not in the lakes but could have been helpful to you or other people.

NannyR · 17/02/2021 08:18

Funf was pointing out that you could look for a group of smaller cottages rather than one big one, similar to the one she linked to.

ceeveebee · 17/02/2021 08:21

Tbf the OP already said that a group of cottages might be better, so it was a bit of a pointless post, but still no need to be rude!

kazza446 · 17/02/2021 08:38

Have a look at this cottage. I can highly recommend it : www.sallyscottages.co.uk/hollin-how

MinnieMountain · 17/02/2021 10:27

And I have already apologised but thanks for the pile on Confused

Sykes Cottages were good when I was looking. They do the groups of cottages as well as enormous houses that sleep loads of people.

bringmelaughter · 18/02/2021 09:47

We used to stay at lingholme when it was a bit faded and cheap to stay at. The new owners (when I say new last 8 years or so) have really carefully renovated everything there. They are lovely and it is gorgeous but relaxed. I’m always recommending and am yearning for a break there as we were supposed to be there this week for half term.

bringmelaughter · 18/02/2021 09:48

Sorry that was in reply to @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross

murbblurb · 18/02/2021 09:50

Fwiw I know the location of those Welsh cottages. You have a much higher likelihood of sun than in the lake District!! But no help if a massive journey.

MyOtherProfile · 18/02/2021 09:53

Hoseasons are good for finding a cluster of cottages / chalets. Check out their website for sites in the lakes.

APeakyBlinder · 18/02/2021 10:27

Can't imagine that many households will be allowed to mix then but I admire your wishful thinking!
