Another Place in Lake District

I am looking for somewhere for a special birthday and had my eye on this hotel. I have also looked at the Gilpin, but the prices are eye watering. For essentially a day and a half (two day booking) I can't justify the price. Another Place has very mixed reviews, and I really want this trip to be memorable.
Has anyone been there? Any recommendations for dinner near either hotel in case we don't eat in the restaurants? The restaurant in Another Place doesn't get rave reviews.
I am looking for somewhere with great customer service, great food, a really relaxing vibe, lovely scenery. Not keen on heavy swags, piped music and snooty staff so avoiding creaky country house vibe. Any other suggestions welcome.

How about the Langdale Hotel? Probably not the greatest scenery as it's in a valley - but location is great. And they have a nice Spa!

Samling is lovely but ££££

GoLightlyontheEarth · 10/02/2021 10:42

I had looked at the Samling too, it's so hard to choose. Scotland is also an option, i have spent hours searching and getting increasingly confused.

The Crown at Pooley Bridge is a really nice gastronpub type restaurant if you end up at Another Place.

reprehensibleme · 10/02/2021 11:17

Greywalls in East Lothian. Peat Inn in Fife. Several nice hotels in St Andrews. Gleneagles is fab.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 10/02/2021 11:22

Langdale is lovely, if you aren’t taking children then Brimstone at Landgale is fantastic. The Stove restaurant is very nice and you can dress up or you can go to Wainwright’s pub if you want more relaxed.

The Samling used to be amazing but I haven’t been for years.

What about the Drunken Duck?

If Scotland is an option this thread might be useful www.mumsnet.com/Talk/scotsnet/4147958-nice-hotels

Thanks. The thread mentioned above has some great ideas too.

I love the Langdale.

Boar. Not board!!

Try Lakeside Hotel and Spa

Funf · 11/02/2021 08:07

What about an upmarket B&B?

mnahmnah · 11/02/2021 08:10

The Inn in the Lake, it’s in Glenridding on Ullswater

GoLightlyontheEarth · 11/02/2021 16:49

I have been to the Inn on the Lake for my husbands special birthday. We hated it. The food was mediocre, there was no ambiance and I couldn't sleep in the stuffy, oppressive bedroom.
Have looked at an upmarket B and B, but not sure I want the faff of getting taxis back and forth and finding a restaurant in the area. Still thinking about that.
Still looking!! I think a B and B might be the best option but I want total luxury and great food on site.

The Gilpin in lovely- and the owner is really nice too.

Or there are places like Windermere Boutique Hotel and then a 10 min walk/2 min drive up into Windermere or down into Bowness for food.

The samling is gorgeous

So is the Low Wood and its recently had a new spa put in.

Drunken Duck or the Langdale for me. The Drunken Duck has wonderful service, gorgeous rooms and really good food.

If you stay at the Drunken Duck, you can get a discount on the Langdale spa, too (or at least you could when I was last there).

The spa at the Daffodil is outstanding too, but I only had lunch so can't really comment on what dinner would be like.

Which would you choose between the Gilpin and the Samling? I think it will be between those two.

@GoLightlyontheEarth I don't know. I've just been looking at photos of both, the Samling is quite close to Ambleside is you wanted to have a wander where as The Gilpin is quite remote.
Overall probably the Samling just because of the Hot tub looking over lake (but not a lake) Windermere.

FellWanderer · 15/02/2021 14:02

We got married at the Gilpin. It is ££££££ but the food was amazing!

springdale1 · 15/02/2021 14:21

The Forestside in Grasmere has a Michelin star restaurant

Roystonv · 15/02/2021 14:51

Lodore Falls near Keswick has a fantastic modern spa and some very nice bedrooms, not sure about food.

Another vote for Lodore Falls

If you really want it to be amazing then personally I’d just spend the money and go to one of the really top places. You do tend to get what you pay for with hotels, and where cheaper places can be nice for what they are real luxury always costs.
