Liverpool and The Beatles - where to go!

PurpleSweetPeas · 24/10/2020 21:24

Help! I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles (I know!) but my husband is and it's his 50th birthday next year. Trying to plan a mini break. Any recommendations would every gratefully received. Best things to do? Anything but necessarily I'd think of. Is there a better area to stay in? Anything!

Oh didn’t John Lennon live at gambier terrace opposite the Anglican cathedral?
Think I’m Planning a secret Beatles history Tour!

Rummikub · 24/10/2020 22:28

Albert Dock has Budget hotels but think at weekends booked out by hen and stag nights
There’s an aparthotel on bold street.

Aparthotel was great. So nice having a mini living room and kitchen and a good price too. A 15 minute walk to the docks though but would definitely do it again.
TheMarzipanDildo · 24/10/2020 22:34

Oh I miss Liverpool so much!

Rummikub · 24/10/2020 22:36

I work in the area and I do like discovering bits of history like that. Ye cracke was where we went as sixth formers.

Redcrayons · 24/10/2020 22:37

Hards Days night hotel for Beatles experience.

But then Anything in the city centre would be fine, you can walk to most of the things mentioned.

SwedishEdith · 24/10/2020 22:44

This guy does a walking tour in Liverpool of various film locations. Never done it but sounds good fun.

Strawberry fields has just opened a cafe serving very yummy scouse. www.strawberryfieldliverpool.com/cafe
Penny Lane and the barber shop should also be on the list

Funf · 25/10/2020 07:06

Liverpool is a fantastic compact city with lots to see and do
www.donthibernate.co.uk/liverpool/

Bold Street in the City and Lark lane just a short drive away has some excellent eating places.
Beatles, plenty of organised trips, but easy to DIY
www.donthibernate.co.uk/liverpool-the-beatles/

Its also a good base for other places, The Wirral Peninsular is nice.
Southport
www.donthibernate.co.uk/day-or-evening-trip-to-southport/

As mentioned above its also been used for many films, Batman is currently being filmed in the centre, Peaky Blinders uses several locations.
Hotels.
Just take care with location check the distance and transport to the city, IE Titanic is a nice hotel but at the moment nothing is near it, the building next door is used to Film Peaky Blinders and is derelict / building site, the area is being developed, but still in its infancy.

Now if its wet and you fancy something totally different

Wow, you have all been so helpful. Thank you!
I'm glad I have a year to plan, and boy do I like to plan!!

I was thinking of using the train as we live about 3 hours away and thought it would be nice but it's so expensive. So driving it is then! Do I just need to find accommodation with parking or is there another option that isn't just leaving he car in a car park for 3 days?

noideaatallreally · 25/10/2020 09:45

The cheapest place to park that is central is the multi storey on Mount Pleasant street. Or if you stay in somewhere like the Campinile the parking if free - it's a bit of a walk into the city, but it is on the waterfront. It depends on your budget really.

God I miss Liverpool.....

noideaatallreally · 25/10/2020 09:48

liverpool.gov.uk/parking-roads-and-travel/find-parking/council-car-parks/mount-pleasant/
£4 to park all day. It's not clear on the website, but you certainly used to be able to park there overnight - have done many times. Someone local on mn will be able to tell you if that is still the case. We Avoid John Lewis carpark - it's very expensive.

Rummikub · 25/10/2020 10:02

I don’t know about parking overnight there. I do know they shit the car park at 8pm. And the traffic wardens live there!

Rummikub · 25/10/2020 10:03

Shut the car park !!

Lurleene · 25/10/2020 10:23

We spent a half term there last year and had an amazing time, we crammed in so much and it was so easy to do as there is so much to do so close together.

A few things that haven't already been mentioned. We hopped on a train for a quick journey to Crosby beach to see all the Antony Gormley statues. We had a beautiful walk there and it was one of the highlights of the trip.

DS and I went up the Radio City Tower, that has a great view over the city and was really helpful to get our bearings when we were back on the ground.

We stumbled across a National Trust property The Hardmans House whilst we were visiting the cathedrals. It was the home and studio of a photographer in the 50s and it was fascinating, like visiting a time capsule.

I did go to the Beatles Experience then an hour later visited the actual Cavern. To be honest I think I would rather have saved the money spent getting in to the Experience to spend on drinks in the Cavern. The experience replicated the Cavern and was rammed so difficult to spend time leading the exhibits. I'd rather have spent more time in the Cavern IMO.

Hope you have a great time when you get to go.

Funf · 25/10/2020 11:09

Mount pleasant is the cheapest, the Hotels should be able to tell you about parking.
The Adelphi is not a Good hotel its opposite Mount pleasant but very run down.
Near Hardmans house is Moose on Hope Street, very good for food, especially breakfast.

This is nice to walk past as its nearby, another unusual Liverpool land mark

Casbah Coffee Club - in West Derby suburb. My DH is a big fan of the Beatles and loved it! The National Trust owns Hohn Lennon and Paul McCartney houses and you can visit them - not in the winter though! Really good and the guides are very knowledgeable.

Once you have exhausted Liverpool try North Wales its fab

PurpleSweetPeas · 30/10/2021 08:25

Wow, just wanted to come back and update the thread to say thank you to all you wonderful people for your suggestions. We are on our last day here and absolutely loving Liverpool. We've done pretty much all of the suggestions.
The Cathedrals are spectacular. I can't recommend Mad Day Out Tours enough - what a lovely guy.
The bombed out Church, stuff on Bold Street, all the museums, the list goes on GrinGrinGrin

You must go on a ferry.
And if he’s into history there’s a bit of the original dock behind glass in the number 1 car park. But to be honest it’s a bit underwhelming. However, its interesting to see how far back the edge of the river used to be.

I like the sound of that! I'll have a look as we are heading over that way today. Thanks 😊
