Let me extol the virtues of the Lleyn Peninsula.

Spent last week there in a self catering cottage, on a farm.

For those who are mildly geographically challenged it is the sticky out bit just underneath Anglesey.

Absolutely beautiful. Just the tops. Lots of small mountainous/big hillish bits. Everywhere else is rolling green hills with sheep and cows galore. Occasional cool mini bits of forest to drive through (tunnels of trees that the dd's squealed with delight every time we drove through).

And the beaches........well if the sea hadn't been shriek inducingly cold we could have been on a tropical island. Aquamarine blue it was. Top sand, nice rock pooly stuff, good tides so you didn't have half a mile to get to the sea when the tide was out, but big enough so as DH could make a proper big (I may not own a ferrari but check out the size of this mound of sand) sized sand castles.

Most of the beaches had good cafes on. Our fave beach (Porth Oer aka Whistling Sands), had a cafe that did Cheddar and Chutney panninis....how wonderful is that.

Abersoch (where the Cheshire Set holiday donchaknow), also v nice, some good shops and plenty of good eating establishments. No tat.

Oh and the weather was excellent, I got a mild tan...in October.

So there we go. Had to get that out of my system. Great place. We will be returning.

interesting - can you link to where you stayed if it was nice, pls?

Slubberdegullion · 09/10/2007 18:20

We went with this company. Really good value. Will have to look and see which number cottage we were in.

We really were in deepest darkest Wales, a mile up a little farm track. Don't think the dd's have ever experienced proper black as night dark before.

Number 91 we were in. 'Twas lovely. Lots of loud mooing in the night from the cows just outside the window.

NOOOOO what are you DOING? You're telling everyone! It's Britain's best kept secret, shut up!

(Did you go to Penlech beach? And a lot of the beaches are riddled with yummy mussels too - or were 20 years ago))

lapsedrunner · 09/10/2007 18:27

I would second a vote for the Llyn Penninsula. I went here www.gwynfrynfarm.co.uk when DS was 2.7 and it was great for kids. How many working farms do you know with an indoor pool & gym!

PandaG · 09/10/2007 18:27

agreed! love Porth Oer, and Abersoch, stayed very close to Blackrock a couple of times. LOts to do and see

IdrisTheDragon · 09/10/2007 18:27

We used to go to the Lleyn Penisula when I was little .

Slubberdegullion · 09/10/2007 18:31

Oops sorry colditz, had such an excellent time I just want to sing it's praises. I am brimming with enthusiasm .

I got a bit confused with the different 'porth' and beach names. Is Penlech the one at Morfa Nefyn? We tried to do as many beaches as possible (to decide which one we want to be nearest to next time).

The weather obviously helped. If it had pissed it down every day I might not be quite so enthusiastic.

but its in WALES

pointydog · 09/10/2007 18:34

oo I am interested, slubber. My sister lives down that way and I'm wondering when to visit her again.

We nrmally stay on a nice and cheap caravan site. Will look into

pointydog · 09/10/2007 18:34

PoshCod Robinson, is it?

Slubberdegullion · 09/10/2007 18:35

Oh I know, proper Wales, so you wnet into the Londis to buy milk and the paper and they're chatting away in beautiful melodic Welsh. I liked to imagine they were discussing ancient runes and stuff (rather than the Rugby). Makes you feel like you are properly on holiday.

OP posts:
pointydog · 09/10/2007 18:37

You're not like dh then. He always thinks they are talking about him. All derogatory, of course.

PoshCod · 09/10/2007 18:38

men ins welsh accents make my skin crawl tbh
dh likes to do it to wind me up..

Slubberdegullion · 09/10/2007 18:40

But its Welsh with a Welsh accent which is a different kettle of fish.

OP posts:
pointydog · 09/10/2007 18:44

ACtually, in France dh thought these men in a restuarant were talking about us all (when I was away from table). And I really do think they were.

I don;t imagine any romantic conversations in Londis, slubber. You're a bit sappy with that one

Slubberdegullion · 09/10/2007 18:49

Oh but I can't help it, I'm a card carrying Tolkein nerd, and so much of his Elvish language is based on the Celtic ones, so whenever I hear it I just can't help myself....they are all so telling each other the ancient tales of Beren and Luthien.

I never suspect they are talking about me, I'm just buying the milk.

OP posts:
pointydog · 09/10/2007 18:54

I do sometimes think they might be talking about incomers, house burning and Wales being England's playground.

pointydog · 09/10/2007 18:55

But I do love the North wELSH countryside. And I am fond of Welsh cakes.

AbbyMumsnet · 09/10/2007 18:56

Please post a review - sounds fab.

Slubberdegullion · 09/10/2007 19:01

ooh, I've never done a review before. Will have a go.

And pointydog, barabrith...by day 5 we were like, sod sandwiches on the beach, lets just eat Welsh fruit cake (I was indeed in heaven).

pointydog · 09/10/2007 19:03

I remeber there was a lovely deli in Conwy for lunch snacks.

Never been to Abersoch but a var wealthy vague acquaintance of mine has a second home there.

pointydog · 09/10/2007 19:04

well, when I say wealthy.... I s'pose a holiday home in Wales doesn't sound that marvellous... s'all relative

Slubberdegullion · 09/10/2007 19:08

Oh I'd be impressed by someone with a second holiday home in Abersoch. The posh (old) money types around here holiday religiously there.

OP posts:
pointydog · 09/10/2007 19:13

I'm agin second homes, by the way. From the housing point of view. I am. I'm not just trying to escape the wrath of moondog.

You make it sound as if we slaver and fantasise over 2nd home owners, slubber.
