Where can I find a holiday cottage that is a little bit remote but not to far from the beach and only a short drive from shops?

Looking for suggestions of where we can go for a break? We usually go to Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Wales but want to try somewhere different. We live in the landlocked Midlands so want to get to the coast and breathe in the fresh sea air but we want to avoid packed tourist hotspots. Looking for accommodation that is in a more remote location, near the coast and only a short drive from shops etc (so not too remote 🙈) Can any of you lovely lot suggest a hidden treasure you know of that could fit the bill?

Lindesfarne / Holy Island. Yes, you get tourists but in low numbers and they have to be off the island before they get caught by high tide. There are also lovely places opposite the island on the mainland.

@MNHQ can you delete 4 of the 5 "out of nowhere" duplicate posts please. I posted it once but for some reason.... a perfect example of where being able to edit posts would be brilliant 😀

Lol Lindisfarne or many places in North East/Northumberland would work ok lots of beautiful beaches with plenty of space if you can find any available accommodation that you like.
Watching with interest incase anyone else comes up with a gem.

Northumberland is awesome!

It's so good.

Seahouses or any coastal towns round there are awesome

Co Durham

Is this for next year? You'll be lucky to get a motel in Slough this summer.

There are loads of places like this along the English coastline. Look at any popular seaside resort then go a bit further along the coast or Inland slightly.

Norfolk coast were stayed in a village called Mundesley and it was lovely.

Splattherat · 08/07/2020 22:27

Yes I remember camping in Norfolk and visiting a beautiful beach something like Wells Near or by the Sea.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I’ve got a few to go and research now and yes it is for this summer 😬 Just had our holiday to Portugal cancelled today. We guessed it would happen but now trying to organise a break last minute that is away from the throngs. It may be mission impossible but going to see what I can find. If anyone else thinks of somewhere that might work for us please let us know. Thank you all 😊

Scotland. Plenty of places like that, but hard to find somewhere with vacancies now.

okiedokieme · 08/07/2020 22:48

NE is lovely, Yorkshire northwards.

I hear Holy Island is nice.

West Wales?

orangejuicer · 08/07/2020 22:53

Ah sorry, spotted Wales in your post!

Northumberland has got busier and busier in recent years and I would expect it to be more so this year. Holy island/bamburgh and Seahouses great but firmly on the tourist radar. If you can't find anywhere there (Amble another option), try some places a little further inland, like Shilbottle, Felton or maybe Rothbury or Longframlington. All 'normal' villages, Shilbottle a former mining village but more likely to have available accommodation and within 30 mins drive to the coast. Shilbottle and Felton have a really good bakery (The Running Fox) and places to eat (curry house/pub), Rothbury has beautiful walks and a small centre, as well as a National Trust house, and Longframlington is a nice little village and well situated between Morpeth and Alnwick.

Not quite Portugal, but....

We are going to Scotland- Dumfries and Galloway. We only booked our cottage last week so there are some around.

I think you need to think of a rough area then search down.

Lots of sites have specific remote sections but I don't know when you want to go, where or how many people, dog etc.

Secluded secrets has remote listings

Cool places

Rural retreats

Crabtree and Crabtree remote holiday cottages

Unique holiday cottages

Country cottages online, remote cottage holidays

Sykes holiday cottages, isolated holiday cottages

My favourite holiday cottages, remote and secluded cottages

National trust, remote and off grid getaways

Northumbria byways

These are either remote or the bit after the comma if you google takes you to their remote listings.

We are a family of 4, children are aged 8 and 5. No dogs. We love a sandy beach and wild waves. We also like to have a few places to drive out to for a morning or afternoon (villages/towns/different beaches/parks) We like to find a few nice places to eat out and a delicious ice-cream shop would be a bonus. Also would like WiFi in our cottage. We love going to Croyde in North Devon as a base but really want to find somewhere different and a bit quieter this year.

We did consider Scotland as I’ve never been and there are some gorgeous places I’d love to explore up there. I wasn’t sure if we’d be welcome as English tourists at the moment though. 🥴
