Special London lunch ideas please

Looking for somewhere for a special but not wanky lunch in central London for dp and I. I've been wondering about Dans le Noir or maybe Clos Maggiore, having read previous threads on here. We are very down to earth and wouldn't be at all comfortable in anywhere posh, but do like really good food.

Open to any ideas really, but I'm a vegetarian so places like St John and Hawksmoor unlikely to be much good to us. Up to around £50 a head, unless a real 'experience' (ie like Dans le Noir).

Huge thanks in advance!

I'm no great London expert but the restaurant that used to be a special young adult treat with my Grandpa was Rules, this is quite a while back but its been a similar format for a few hundred years so no doubt hasn't changed that much in the last decade or so.

If DH and I were ever to get it London, just the two of us, that's where I would like to go.

We went recently with children and didn't eat at but went to the sky garden which was great fun. The restaurant there looked lovely.

Barrafina has been raved about to me.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/01/2020 21:34

Thanks for these. Will have a look at their menus.

Should have said that dp will probably be in jeans.

Rules looks astonishingly bad for veggies!

Barafina doesn't take bookings so no good.

What about Murano? Fabulous food and Angela Hartnett is as unstuffy as they come. There is usually a real mix of diners and a relaxed atmosphere.

Thankyou.

Langans Brasserie

Ideally we'd prefer a 3 course set menu, rather than brunch, sharing plates etc.

I'd have been tempted by Heston B but it looks poor for veggies.

Social eating house or Berners Tavern. Both Jason Atheron. Both fabulous but not wanky.

Cyberworrier · 11/01/2020 22:15

If you like pubs, the Duke of Cambridge in Angel is fantastic for veggies (and meat eaters). Organic produce (it’s Supplied by the Riverford veg box folks) . Relaxed atmosphere and great for a delicious and relaxed lunch or supper. Good for a canal walk or Camden passage stroll before or after.

Can I recommend Rovi in Fitzrovia?

Special but not wanky, Jeans would be fine. Vegetables based so perfect for you but some meat/ fish. and they do a Riesling flight. Grin
Only thing is it is mainly sharing plates I think...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/01/2020 22:21

Thanks for these. Love pubs but want something a bit more special this time. Will certainly keep it in mind for another time. Looking at the others now.

Another vote for Murano. Le Caprice might be worth a punt.

thetoddleratemyhomework · 11/01/2020 22:30

Have you thought about somewhere like Moro? It is great for veggies. Not a set menu I don't think, but great food - special but not super fancy or pricey. Kind of place that isn't starched napkins but feels like you are going out.

thetoddleratemyhomework · 11/01/2020 22:31

I found Murano a bit starchy I think, but was a while ago.

thetoddleratemyhomework · 11/01/2020 22:35

Or locanda Locatelli?

thetoddleratemyhomework · 11/01/2020 22:36

But LL is pretty expensive

actiongirl1978 · 11/01/2020 22:40

Pollan st social. Mayfair, literally 2 mins walk from Oxford st tube.

I went in Dec, the set menu was 40 I think, lots of little amuse bouches etc and bread included.

Had a great bottle of albarino for 60.

Not stuck up, v relaxed, we were wearing jeans.

Ottolenghi’s Noppi

bumpertobumper · 11/01/2020 22:48

Kitty Fishers is delicious

Lostmyunicorn · 11/01/2020 22:49

Anywhere ottolenghi is brilliant for veggies. Not posh (well at least the ones I have been to aren’t) but fantastic food. Oxo tower is great for views and feels special. Also good for a walk along the riverbank afterwards to work off the food!
