I’ve only been to Cornwall once, years ago. Stayed in Newquay- wasn’t too keen on it as a place to stay. Loved St Ives, but can’t afford to stay there unfortunately.

Family of 4, older primary, younger secondary ages. We like pretty places, beaches etc. Have transport so intend your travel around. Want to have a few days out and a few beach days.

Air bnb seems to be coming up the most affordable for the best accommodation but I need an area to base the search on. Thanks in advance 😊

Falmouth - but I’m biased as I live here!

mmmmmchocolate · 27/12/2019 18:30

I’ll check Falmouth now phanny thank you. Any attractions you particularly recommend?

Padstow is lovely

YearofMisAdventure · 27/12/2019 18:32

Totnes was nice.

Saltdoughmuncher · 27/12/2019 18:34

Polzeath is a lovely beach.

Padstow is a nice area but no real beach.

St Ives is good as it’s got a proper beach and a nice town. If you have a car then I would go as close to St Ives as you can afford.

Babypug · 27/12/2019 18:34

Watergate bay hotel - THE BEST anytime of year

Saltdoughmuncher · 27/12/2019 18:35

If you want a good location just as a base to then travel from then Truro is fairly central.

PhannyMcNee · 27/12/2019 18:36

In Falmouth itself you have the maritime museum and Pendennis Castle (English Heritage) as well as beaches.

Catch the foot ferry to St Mawes (another castle, also English Heritage) or up the river to Truro, stopping off at Trelissick (National Trust).

Elemental on Swanpool beach is good for Watersports and ice cream. Mylor Sailing School or Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust if you/the kids want to have a go at sailing. You would need to go to north coast for surfing though.

Glendurgan (National Trust) and Trebah Gardens are gorgeous gardens and have beaches so take a picnic & cossie.

Hayle is good. We always stay there because it's really close to St Ives but much cheaper to stay at. You can get a coastal train into St Ives which is lovely in the evenings. Hayle also has a lovely, massive beach.

moreismore · 27/12/2019 18:39

You can’t beat polzeath for a family beach and plenty other places nearby to explore.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 27/12/2019 18:41

Cadgwith Cove.

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain · 27/12/2019 18:41

Totnes is in Devon Confused

I often stay at Trebarwith. Beautiful beach, good surfing, nice pubs and walks to Tintagel.

Ricekrispie22 · 27/12/2019 18:41

Looe is a harbour town divided into two parts either side of the arched stone bridge across the river. East Looe is the main tourism centre - narrow streets lined with shops, cafes and pubs that lead through to the main town beach. West Looe is a good beach for exploring with lots of rock pools and a good view across to St George's, or Looe Island. There are boat trips to the island in the summer season, as well as along the coast. A train journey on the Looe Valley Line will take you to the ancient stone circle at Duloe and the holy well at St Keyne.

2020theteendrink · 27/12/2019 18:44

Really depends on what type of days out you want?

FennyBridges · 27/12/2019 18:45

Charlestown. Fowey (possibly pricey like St Ives), St Mawes, St Austell.

Ihavethefinalsleigh · 27/12/2019 18:46

I like Boscastle, Tintagel, Trebarwith, anywhere along there.

Yes Totnes is in Devon.

JontyDoggle37 · 27/12/2019 18:47

Porthtowan. Surfer village with a fab beach and a couple of great bars/cafes by the beach. Local to lots of other locations so you can nip in the car or walk along the coast.

mmmmmchocolate · 27/12/2019 18:48

Ok I’m checking out polzeath and Hayle, thank you.

I think I’ve looked at Padstow before and it was a bit more expensive but I’ll see what is available as it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go!

Watergate Bay Hotel is coming in at almost 4 grand for Monday to Friday, so might have to put that on my bucketlist 😂

Thanks for that info Phanny!

Totnes is nice. But in Devon.

Depends when you are going. But Cornwall is easy to move from coast to coast.

St Austell is nice, easy to get to places like beach or Eden project. Loads of lovely beaches. Nearby.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/12/2019 18:51

Newquay is known to be a bit grotty.

TreesSandSea · 27/12/2019 18:51

Coverack
Gorgeous

2020theteendrink · 27/12/2019 18:51

I'd really recommend looking at what you want to do and go from there.

Cornwall in peak time is a pain travel wise. Personally I'd stick myself somewhere in the A30 corridor if you just want a base eg family home. Fraddon, Roche, Blackwater. Then you are close enough to South and North. East and West.

2020theteendrink · 27/12/2019 18:53

And yes I hate Newquay too. Went last summer with family for a few hours. We live 20/30 minutes away. Not been for years. Won't be going again except for work!

mmmmmchocolate · 27/12/2019 18:53

Wow, loads more posts while I was writing that. Lots to look at and absorb.

Is anyone familiar with Marazion?

GuyFawkesDay · 27/12/2019 18:57

Hayle is fab. Central, fantastic beaches on the doorstep and Philps pasty shop for the lunches every day. They do fab sarnies etc and cakes etc so we just buy lunch and go.

It's a great location to base from. Stayed in Bude a few years ago and it's a bit too far to the "main" Cornwall attractions apart from Eden.
