Alcohol on trains?!

frankiesamson · 17/08/2018 16:47

Can someone tell me why virgin trains in the uk allow people to drink cans of beer & alcohol stinking the carriage out? Am I the only person who finds this disgusting & unnecessary

I hate this too. I usually see blokes drinking cans of lager at 8.30am. That's on cross country services from Manchester. Local services too. Groups of pissed lads at that time of the morning talking loudly, inappropriately and swearing are not what I want to experience or my children either. I'm surprised it's allowed.

CraftyGin · 18/08/2018 09:20

One of the attractions of first class is the free booze.

ScreamingValenta · 18/08/2018 09:22

I could also put my crying child in your ear hole & say "it's fine because there are worse sounds".

I've more than once had a crying child in my earhole on the train Grin. I wouldn't suggest banning children from trains, though - children crying is part of everyday life, with which you must expect to come into contact on public transport.

escapetothecuntree · 18/08/2018 09:24

Does anyone know if First Class on trains sell WKD?

Asking for a friend BlushGrin

ScreamingValenta · 18/08/2018 09:24

One of the attractions of first class is the free booze.

If you get those expensive mini-wines free, on a long journey, a determined drinker could probably break even on the difference between first and standard class Grin.

EduCated · 18/08/2018 09:25

I personally find fruit one of the worst smells - the smell of an orange being peeled in a busy train seems to really get to me.

Perhaps they should be banned.

BikeRunSki · 18/08/2018 09:31

I normal laws of being drunk and disorderly apply though. I have been known to complain about drunken behaviour of train passengers, and they were removed at the next stop where British Transport Police were waiting for them.

They were very merry before we’d left King’s Cross and aggressively drunk by the time we got to Peterborough. They were removed at Newark.

frankiesamson · 18/08/2018 09:33

SoyDora "..would you ban smelly food... and toilets?"

Yes- why not ban smelly or hot food on trains? Hot food is banned in london tubes because it's inconsiderate. There were posters all over the tube a few years ago "DO NOT EAT HOT FOOD ON THE TUBE- be considerate of others". If people can't be trusted to act considerately then you have to make rules.

As for toilets, they keep loos in a separate section of the carriage for that reason- can you imagine if people went to the loo in their seats?

going to the loo is a necessity, eating a freshly cooked chicken tikka masala curry the precise moment you board a train is certainly not ! Plan your day better.

BikeRunSki I'm thinking now of the Viz parody of WH Auden's The Night Train.

He's refined the consumption of booze to an art
A mile out of York, he was pissed as a fart.

frankiesamson · 18/08/2018 09:35

PerverseConverse "I hate this too. "

Glad to see I'm very much not alone & the percentage of people bothered by it appears enough to deem it anti-social behaviour

What me? I’ve never eaten on a train, I find the smell offensive so I wouldn’t subject someone else to it Smile. Often have a small bottle of wine though.

OliveOrTwist · 18/08/2018 09:37

Out of interest, how do you feel about drinking on flights OP?

frankiesamson · 18/08/2018 09:38

"I've more than once had a crying child in my earhole on the train "

And did you enjoy it?

Asuna · 18/08/2018 09:38

If I’m on a train journey with my husband, it’s not unusual for us to have a can on the way. Usually it’s because we’re going on holiday or away for the weekend, and a relaxing beer is the start of it for us. I can’t say I’ve ever thought that the odd drink on a train smelt that much, unless people have been drinking to excess and spilled a lot. I do think that being drunk on a train is a different thing, and should be policed a bit better. Nothing wrong with just having a couple on the journey though.

frankiesamson · 18/08/2018 09:39

"What me?"

Good one.

OP posts:
SoyDora · 18/08/2018 09:41

I don’t enjoy children screaming in my ear, but accept it as part and parcel of using public transport.
Honestly I don’t know how people have the energy to get so worked up about things like this.

frankiesamson · 18/08/2018 09:42

SoyDora - "I’ve never eaten on a train, I find the smell offensive so I wouldn’t subject someone else to it "

So you agree as well!

OP posts:
EduCated · 18/08/2018 09:44

Goodness, you do seem rather aggy about this, OP.

I don’t have any issue with someone having a glass of wine, a G&T, a couple of beers on a long journey.

People being drunk and aggressive twats are twats and need dealing with. Sober and aggressive twats also need dealing with.

General PSA: did you know you can text the British Transport Police on 61016 to report antisocial behaviour/crimes etc. Means you don’t have to phone and say it all out loud if you’re stuck in a carriage with them.

SoyDora · 18/08/2018 09:44

Yes, I agree that many foods smell offensive in small spaces. I accept other people eating though.
I don’t agree that alcohol on a train smells offensive, unless they’ve been drinking all day or have spilt it everywhere. I have never been bothered by people having the odd beer/wine/g&t on the train though. But hey, we’re all different 🤷🏻‍♀️

ScreamingValenta · 18/08/2018 09:45

And did you enjoy it?

Enjoy it? Do you take me for some kind of oddball who enjoys others' distress? Grin.

Of course I didn't enjoy it, but I recognised it as something that inevitably happens from time to time. Life doesn't revolve around me - I don't expect people on public transport to stop doing normal things because I find them mildly inconvenient.

SoyDora · 18/08/2018 09:45

I’m actually genuinely surprised that you’re still so angry about this the morning after.

Noboozeforme · 18/08/2018 10:10

I'm going on a long train journey (first class don't you know!) soon and I can't wait to be sitting there pretending I'm posh while sipping a glass of red!!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 18/08/2018 10:20

I hate other people having boring conversations or sitting next to me when there are loads of free seats. That's definitely anti social. Grin

confusedandconfuddled · 18/08/2018 10:30

Not allowed in Northern Ireland - thank goodness!

Quickerthanavicar · 18/08/2018 10:33

As long as it's not the driver.
