Where to go in Yorkshire?

Honey1975 · 11/07/2018 16:08

We live in the south east and are planning to visit family near Leeds in August holidays. As it's a fair way we thought we could spend a few days up there. Will only see family for one or two days.

Where is nice to go/stay in that part of the country and what might be good for us to do as a family of 4, DC's are 6 & 10? Don't know the area at all so would appreciate any suggestions.

Scarborough is a nice family resort. Sandy beach, with interesting places to visit and lovely countryside nearby.

heatherblue · 11/07/2018 16:14

Whitby area. Lovely coast and it's very easy to get to the North York Moors from there.

MoMandaS · 11/07/2018 16:16

Dalby Forest. Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay. Those are all North York Moors/coast territory. Or you could go into the Dales, but that's more walking and pretty villages really, not so much to do.

Lifeaback · 11/07/2018 16:17

Ilkley moors/ilkley river bank is lovely and just outside leeds

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 11/07/2018 16:21

I live and am from Scarborough, if you come on a hot, sunny day it's beautiful

Beebiesandcheebies · 11/07/2018 16:23

Whereabouts will you be visiting friends?

LittleMissCwtch · 11/07/2018 16:27

Knaresborough and Harrogate are nice, Knaresborough has a nice small castle and a nice riverside walk.

York is lovely too.

Filey is a nice small seaside town and when the tide is out you can walk around the Brigg and there are lots of small rock pools.

Scarborough is nice too, as is Whitby but personally I prefer Filey.

Hebden Bridge is very quirky with some lovely shops.

Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire is great for the kids to explore, lots of rocks to climb though some have steep drops so depends how sensible your kids are!

cathyandclare · 11/07/2018 16:28

if it's only a few days there's loads to do in and around Leeds. York, Harrogate, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Royal Armouries and Harewood House are all pretty close.

Our favourite day trip is the Forbidden Corner, but make sure you book and stop off for ice-cream at the Brymor farm en route.

LockedOutOfMN · 11/07/2018 16:29

Malham Cove and Bolton Abbey are both lovely days out with picnics and scenic walks.

BeyondSea · 11/07/2018 16:32

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal (near Ripon) is a lovely day out, plus there are often activities for children and a play park.

Thesearmsofmine · 11/07/2018 16:33

I would stay near York, it’s gorgeous and lots to do, you can have a day at the coast easily enough from York too.

RatherBeRiding · 11/07/2018 16:37

Depends on your interests as a family. If you like walking and countryside, then just pick up on OS map and stick a pin in! Bronte country (Haworth), Brimham Rocks (Harrogate way), the Dales, the Moors - its not called God's Own Country for nothing!

If the kids need more entertainment, the Royal Armouries in Leeds is good also Tropical World. Jorvik Viking Centre in York, National Railway Museum in York, Energi trampoline park in York (also great for shopping.....). There's a high-wire adventure place near Sheffield.

I could go on. And on. And on. Grin

Honeyroar · 11/07/2018 16:44

Have a day in York, it's lovely and has lots of child friendly attractions.

Scarborough and Whitby are lovely, but I prefer Filey. It has a lovely little beach and great rock pools that kids love exploring.

Malham is a lovely area.

There are so many places, you can't go wrong!

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/07/2018 16:47

The Forbidden Corner is great fun, it's not too far from Richmond. Middleham Castle is excellent too. Second anyone who said Whitby, York or Brimham Rocks. Some wonderful walks in the area too.

MedicinalGin · 11/07/2018 16:50

You can totally rinse your National trust membership in Yorkshire- we love fountains Abbey and nunnington Hall the most.

Stockeld Park is awesome too and Williams Den is supposed to be good for little kids.

Yorkshire is pretty massive though- it’s like a small country in itself!!

Enjoy your holiday Smile

Maranello4 · 11/07/2018 17:08

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is just outside of Leeds, in Wakefield- amazing place for adults and children.

BikeRunSki · 11/07/2018 17:11

All of the above!

If they're into Vikings, then the Jorvik Centre in York would be a hit.
Bolton Abbey, Billy Bob's Ice Cream Parlour

Eureka (Halifax) ! - if it rains, maybe combine with The Piece Hall

Quicker trisp out actually in Leeds - Abbey House Museum, Kirkstall Road and The Royal Armouries (Armouries are great fun if the free boat from the Armouries to the station is running).

Fun place to eat - Rosie's Diner, Kirkstall Road

Bit further out - Yorkshire Sculpture Park (much more interesting and child friendly than it sounds), £10 to park for a day, but park entry is free. OK cafes, but only 5 mins from the superb Blacker Hall Farm Shop and Cafe

I hate Forbidden Corner, but appreciate that I am in the minority

Scarborough or Whitby if you want a beach - I prefer Whitby

Brimham Rocks (NT), Otley Chevin, Hardcastle Crags (NT), Golden Acre Park, Temple Newsam for running around and exploring. BR and HC have lots of rocks to scramble on. TN and GAP are actually in Leeds, OC only a short distance away

Ilkley Lido, and Betty's.

There are trampoline parks all over the place around Leeds, also a climbing wall, and an extremely high wall at Brighouse if that floats your boat.

Leeds Clip n Climb is a combo of soft play, climbing wall and trampoline park.

BikeRunSki · 11/07/2018 17:12

Diggerland at Castleford - but only if they are really into diggers, because its not cheap! About 20 mins drive from Leeds City Centre. There are usually 15% off vouchers in their leaflets in motorway service stations etc and online.

Honey1975 · 11/07/2018 17:24

Wow thanks so much for all the suggestions. The family we are visiting live just outside Leeds and they will probably take us out for a day. I'm really liking the sound of York and Whitby so will have a look into accommodation options.

Fountains abbey is lovley! I think its a bit expensive to get in but it is really nice x

Toadsrevisited · 11/07/2018 17:37

Newby hall near Ripon. Amazing pleasure gardens

wizzler · 11/07/2018 23:54

The forbidden corner is amazing. If I were you I would stay somewhere in the dales and spend an the morning in the cheese factory in Hawes, the rope shop, and then the forbidden corner in the afternoon. Then start checking out the waterfalls. Beautiful.

5foot5 · 13/07/2018 14:55

You can get a steam train from Pickering to Whitby which is quite nice.

Fresta · 13/07/2018 15:02

It depends on how far you want to drive each day- Whitby/Scarborough is a 2 hour drive from Leeds! York is about an hour or so away.

Around Leeds I would visit Harewood house, Roundhay Park, Forbidden Corner, Howarth or Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park at Doncaster is amazing.

Bolton Abbey or Fountains Abbey are pretty.

Lightwater Valley is a good theme park with rides.

Skipton, Harrogate and Ripon are nice towns to visit for castles and gift shops.

Castle Howard is worth a visit if you like stately homes.

Lysimachia · 13/07/2018 15:11

Bolton Abbey is lovely and nearby is Hesketh Farm Park which was one of my favourite days out when DS was younger. Farm first then over to Burnsall for a picnic by the river or lunch at the Red Lion then a dip in the river if it was hot. Happy memories.
