Where to go in Yorkshire?

We live in the south east and are planning to visit family near Leeds in August holidays. As it's a fair way we thought we could spend a few days up there. Will only see family for one or two days.

Where is nice to go/stay in that part of the country and what might be good for us to do as a family of 4, DC's are 6 & 10? Don't know the area at all so would appreciate any suggestions.

There are some great family-friendly museums not yet mentioned. I can highly recommend the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds, York Castle museum and Eden Camp in Malton (heading out east from York towards the coast).

If you are interested in Whitby and YORK you could look at staying in the Pickering area. Pretty much in the middle of the two and in the very pretty north YORK moors / Yorkshire woods area.

Depending on which bit of Leeds your family live in, could be a bit of a schlep.

If they are north West leeds, definitely recommend Bolton abbey.
