Liverpool with teenage boys - what are the must do/sees?

Looking to do a few nights in Liverpool with DH and teenagers (16 & 15).

Was thinking obviously something Beetles related and maybe the Ferry across the Mersey. Any thoughts/suggestions? Boys not interested in shopping.

AndNowItsSeven I think we'd struggle to get away with it. They've only just turned 16 and 15 but They are tall and have facial hair etc, I get embarrassed getting DS2 a child fare on the train but he has only been 15 for a few weeks. I've already been on Premier Inn, the price for two rooms comes in under £300 but that would give us a double room and a room with a double bed and single sofa bed. That will just cause arguments. I'd rather two singles or two doubles.

Moose = eggsGrin
DH hates eggs and gets corned beef hash and bacon. They do waffles and pancakes. I also like Grilla on Hanover Street for family friendly food that pleases all and is food for big appetites. If there's a big film on the Odeon at L-One and Fact might be good?

I prefer Maritime, National Museums and Walker Art Gallery to Liverpool Museum. There's a space museum you can get the ferry to.

Moose looks brilliant - everyone likes eggs :) Plus that is DS2s nickname so will appeal to him.

Hanover street social does a nice full English by the way :) or the brink does amazing pancakes!

You certainly won't be stuck for where to eat though there's fabulous places popping up what feels like weekly.

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 28/08/2016 20:57

There's a Nerf gun centre near the city centre, two climbing places near Sandhills station, Otterspool prom is near Aigburth station ( park, cafe, pub and ropes centre) or you can cycle from town down the River Mersey river walk on one of the city bikes ( like the Boris bikes in London- dozens of places to collect and park them around the city). The train stop before Aigburth, St Michaels, is near the Festival Gardens and a Chinese garden- by the side of the river. It is also near Lark Lane ( mentioned above) which is the bohemian section of Liverpool- loads of cafes, restaurants, an ice cream parlour, boho shops and Sefton Park ( has a palm house, a cafe, a lake and lots of lovely walks). There is also China Town in the city centre and a fabulous arch and restaurants. FACT cinema is close by (nice cafe and you can take alcohol into the films) and Liverpool One shopping centre has a golf range and a cinema.
The trains are very good in Liverpool- all the placesI have mentioned are on theNorthern line - trains every 15m and you can get a day SAVEAWAY ticket ( like a travel card in London).

Cinema a good call, hope something good due out :)

Bold Street has lots of good places to eat. We went to an excellent and v reasonably priced pizza place there (I think it was called Crust) and also a Lebanese iirc.

The Travelodge often does really cheap rooms if you book well in advance. They could always swap beds on the second night, if they really couldn't cope without fighting with one in the double and one on the sofa bed.

WankersHacksandThieves · 28/08/2016 21:01

I'm really looking forward to it now! Loads of great ideas. We'll work out an itinerary before we go otherwise we end up wasting time - we need to treat it like a London break and pack everything in :) We didn't get to China town in Manchester but went in London.

I think we might need to pack bigger clothes :)

3 nights remus and of course they won't want to touch each other's sheets :)

They actually get on very well, but things needs to be reasonable equal or someone ends up with a chip on their shoulder and it ends up putting a downer on things 'cos someone is in a mood. It's easier to handle if we are all in the same room, but if they are in a separate room I suspect it may kick off a bit.

I'm not a travelodge fan tbh, we've booked a couple of times and they have not been clean or well maintained.

The arch here is gorgeous and it's the biggest one outside of China! We also have the oldest Chinese community in the Europe it's a lovely little area and right by the Liverpool Cathedral, if you get a chance to go up there and you're not too scared of heights, do so it gives you an amazing view of the city

toothgenie · 28/08/2016 21:09

I found a car parking space on someone's drive very close to Liverpool centre, especially the deck area. Definitely walking distance. I think it cost £8 for two days Here's the link www.justpark.com/

My teens love the watersports centre at the end (go left if you're facing the docks) of the Albert Dock. There's a wakeboard line, canoes, paddle boards etc. Their favourite though, is the trampoline in the middle of the water.

Alibobbob · 28/08/2016 21:19

There is a travel lodge in the Albert Dock, also Hilton and there is a beetles hotel too and a titanic one - the list is endless!

Cinema and crazy golf at Liverpool One.

Google... Days out in Liverpool with the kids although might be too young for your lads.

Knowsley Safari Park - they also have a Go Ape' there. Crocks Trail

Have fun, enjoy your stay in Liverpool.

tararabumdeay · 28/08/2016 21:27

Depends when you're going. Blood Brothers is on at the Empire 19 Sept - 01 Oct. There's still tickets.

Cosby beach and 'Another Place' is haunting and memorable. Southport is a short bus/train ride - a real Victorian seaside town.

Port Sunlight and the Lady Lever Gallery - both stunning -25min on bus.

Or Blackpool with a wristband for the pleasure beach.

Hope your accommodation search goes well. We've stayed at the Campernile Hotel and at some random apartment. Both were cheap when we went but, as pp said, it depends when you go.

WankersHacksandThieves · 28/08/2016 21:32

Thanks for all the great ideas - I'm googling away here :)

They've done wakeboarding and paddleboarding and ropes courses etc. We have a fair bit of that sort of stuff locally and they are also in the Scouts so get a lot of opportunities in that direction - it does sound good though. Also we'll be going in October so might not be the warmest...

Speaking of which I think they will need some more jeans or something. They only have one pair each that fit which is generally fine as they live in shorts and tshirt all year outside of school, they have some outdoor activity trousers but not really the things to be wearing in the city.

tara I looked at the theatre stuff, think we miss most things as it'd an odd time. We are thinking Sunday 9th to Wednesday 12th. DH is off all week but I'm getting low on holidays so that way I only need 3 days off and we miss the expensive friday/saturday nights.

MollyRedskirts · 28/08/2016 21:41

Have a look at the Independent Liverpool site, they've got tons of reviews of restaurants and cafes (and bars, but I'm guessing they're out). I'm local, and I'm always discovering amazing new places on that site that I'd never have found otherwise.

MollyRedskirts · 28/08/2016 21:43

Oh, and the Lebanese place on Bold Street is called Bakchich. It's my favourite place to go for lunch.

Advicepls7080 · 28/08/2016 21:43

Plus it might be worth ordering the indepentliverpool card for when you come because it gives discount in loads of places so might be worth while.

WankersHacksandThieves · 28/08/2016 21:47

Just looking at Indepedent Liverpool now :)

(and bars, but I'm guessing they're out)

What are the licencing laws in respect of children in bars in England? It seems to be a lot less complex than Scotland if I remember rightly.

Just looked at 'The Print Works'. Wow, for that price! Gonna for there now the weekend we're going to see Blood Brothers.

BetweenTwoLungs · 28/08/2016 22:04

The good thing about Liverpool is that the museums are all very close together so you can nip in and out of them. The Siezed section in the Maritime museum is definitely worth a look and may interest two teenage boys - focuses on things that have been confiscated at immigration/tried to get smuggled into the country. Very interesting and a bit different.

We stayed at the Shankley in Liverpool when it had just opened and got a good deal. It was beautiful and had a range of room sizes. Not sure if it might be a fair bit more expensive now though!

AndNowItsSeven · 28/08/2016 22:32

I see yes probably different with boys. My 17 year old is a girl and my youngest ds is only four.

WankersHacksandThieves · 28/08/2016 22:38

Shankly looks good - for some reason they have no availability on the 10th!

If we did Tuesday to Friday instead on Sunday to Wednesday we could book though and train price still the same - just means I have to use an extra day holiday though.

Hmmm.....
