yes i went about 5 or 6 years ago. i thought the bungelow accomodation was outstanding, the swimming facilities and slide at that time were also good.

i remember it has a pub, it wasn't very bulinsesq then.

Polgara2 · 30/01/2007 23:07

Do you mean it IS butlinesq now then?

lol i dont know i have no idea - it was very quiet then but then it was 6 years ago. the bungelows were lovely.

some people like the fast and furiousness of butlinsesq places.

so i think what i am saying is - its quiet. entertainment was not really existent.

Polgara2 · 30/01/2007 23:14

Hmm might be worth investigating then. Am not into Butlins type "entertainment" holidays really. Just can't decide what to do this year! Can't go to Center Parcs coz dh got dodgy knees! I had bad ears last time we flew and dd2 is a rubbish traveller. My options are dwindling methinks . Thanks for info.

Does Ribby Hall have horse-riding? If so my dentist went there with his daughters a few years ago and he is not a Butlins kind of guy!

Polgara2 · 30/01/2007 23:22

Ooh don't know - am going to google it anyway.

Hmm yes it has "equestrian centre" no less!

I live near Ribby Hall, just outside Blackpool, with it's 2p slot machines!! (How long since you've been here? You can't even get a cup of tea in Blackpool for 2p anymore - it's 10p now - 15p for coffee!! Anyway, Ribby Hall is a really nice place - the restaurant is extremely good and they have excellent leisure facilities and an equestrain centre plus hotel. Nice grounds, different to Center Parcs, quieter - lovely and tranquil.

Polgara2 · 30/01/2007 23:31

Oh CrystalPony thank you - it sounds lovely - will send for brochure I think!

I know ribby hall as we often go to dos there, we always laugh when we see the advert as it is tempting until it saysjust outside blackpool!

It s nothing like Butlins though and is the place with horseriding.

crystalpony · 30/01/2007 23:55

Stop dissing Blackpool!!!

JanH · 30/01/2007 23:57

twinset lives in Blackpool!!!

crystalpony · 30/01/2007 23:59

Even more reason to love it then!! I'm Blackpool born and bred and it's a fab place to live, for the most part

twinsetandpearls · 31/01/2007 00:02

It just amuses me that Ribby Hall is not pitching itself atthe typical blackpool tourist who nowadays is on a stag or hen night, is in a £12 a night B&B or in butlins, but at the end of the ad it makes the link.

twinsetandpearls · 31/01/2007 00:07

crystalpony are you pleased or annoyed about the casinos?

crystalpony · 31/01/2007 00:09

Right..but is that not just as a reference because people won't guess where Wrea Green is off the top of their heads if they're not from round here though? Anyhoo, it's a nice place...and not a supercasino in sight....!

crystalpony · 31/01/2007 00:12

we cross-posted --- erm....I'm not sure really. The prom's a tip but I don't honestly think that one supercasino could have solved all the issues that Blackpool has. Let's face it, there are plenty of jobs already available here for one thing, but as the population is so transient, would it really enhance life for actual residents? Can't make my mind up...What does seem to be clear now is that there is no Plan B forthcoming - I really think that the Council had convinced themselves they'd bagged it. What do you reckon?

twinsetandpearls · 31/01/2007 00:17

I am not sure,am ivolved in local politics and went from not wanting the casinos to thinking that we arein last chance saloon and it may be the thing we need as the prom does need sorting out. I was worried though about the cost for us locals through our council tax for the extra policing and social support needed, I think I read somewhere that Atlantatried to go down the casino route and got its fingers burnt badly.

There are not plenty of reliable jobs here though, a few more retail but we have lost many of our industries and they ahve not been replaced.

I think it would have been good for our self esteem to get the casino, the last thing we need is another kick in the teeth and to be told that we are not good enough.

But I don't think we have heard the last of this though in Blackpool.

crystalpony · 31/01/2007 00:17

Seasonal jobs I mean, and jobs in the hospitality industry.

twinsetandpearls · 31/01/2007 00:19

I can tell you that at my meeting monday night we though it was between us and London and thatif we ahd not bagged it there was something of a dark nature going on.

But we are fighting the decision on the basis that we were the official northwest candiddate not Manchester.

crystalpony · 31/01/2007 00:26

They did say that Manchester's bid was successful not least because of the thorough and sincere consultation carried out with the local community before the bid was formulated. You maybe able to clarify, but I can't remember any real consultation taking place with the community? I attended a town hall meeting on a different and totally unconnected social matter (I work with children and young adults with behavioural and anti-social issues) and sure enough, the subject came round the casino - and how the casino would benefit all, including these children! [hmm} ??? Talk about all the eggs in one basket! I agree that there will be appeal etc against the decision, but I really feel they might be flogging a dead horse and wasting time and resources by not addressing the Blackpool we have now, not what could have been.

How we sort it? I really don't know. There seems to be a general consensus that a return to a family resort is desirable and that definately doesn't sit with a gambling mecca but something needs to be done and quick.

crystalpony · 31/01/2007 00:29

Sorry, we cross-posted again.

It must have been gutting for you today then as obviously you're involved with the whole thing..It wasn't you being interviewed opposit coral island this morning was it??!

Can you appeal against this then and if not, is there a Plan B? When they announced Manchester I have to say it all clicked into place ie 2012. Perhaps that's why they got it too?
