The Langham (stunning everything!) if in town;
OR The Ritz if in town - as you get the history/cachet as well as awesome place to stay. Have spent 2 Valentines weekends there.
AVOID: The May Fair hotel (spitting distance from Ritz but 'spit' operative word...); The Westbury; The Dorchester; The Grosvnor(?sp?)

Babington House if OUT of town;

Is a SPECTACULAR boutique hotel in Brighton if by seaside (trying nut failing recall name but suspect you'd find it v quickly on google or tripadvisor)

Castillo Son Vida if abroad (google before dismiss and you can leave at breakfast and be there in time for lunch - is paradise, as is the spa!)

Latter - by a MILE - even though IS abroad would be where I would go. You will NEVER forget it - my fav hotel in whole of Europe with all (ESP the views) to die for. But make sure get a sea view not a 'garden view.

You want to visit Whatley Manor. Fantastic service, interesting selection of rooms. Good spa, limits numbers of locals who can use it. And there is a private couples treatment area. You can also book their cinema for a private movie viewing. The Dining Room has 2 Michelin stars. Lovely gardens. They give you a walkie-talkie for your stroll so that you can order drinks when you find your ideal place to sit and take in the view. It will however spoil your appreciation for all other hotels...

Lucknam Park near Bath is lovely - nicer than Babington in my opinion. Calcot Manor also nice but very child friendly which in my opinion is a bad thing if you don't have your own children with you

I've always fancied Le Manoir but never been.

We did Babington on my DH's 40th and it was nice - got lovely upgrade to great room which they assured me that Beyoncé and JayZ had stayed in or do they say that to all their guests.

The Scarlet at Morgan Porth? We had a fab weekend there last year.

Chewton Glen is lovely in a more traditional way. We've got great prices at The Langham before.

Singita Boulders is amazing - but is a 10 hour flight away. I would still say worth it though.

Have you stayed at Longitude 131 herethere? I've just booked Sails but wishing we could sneak a night there - sadly it would blow the budget completely!

Rudding Park Hotel in Harrogate. Been a few times - the service is second to none, the rooms and food are great and the setting is beautiful. There is a spa and it is only about 5 miles outside Harrogate which is also lovely. Would highly recommend. Look on trip advisor, the reviews speak for themsleves.

We've been lucky enough to stay at the Savoy pre-overhaul and it was pretty special, but we also stayed at Claridges around the same time and it probably had the edge.

DH took me to Bailiffscourt, which was a bit bonkers but lovely, especially the spa.

I'd love to stay at Le Manoir, Claridges and the Savoy again, the Ritz and the Dorchester.

Otherwise in the UK...The Four Seasons in the New Forest if that's still open, Coworth Park in Ascot, Chewton Glen, and Babington House.

The Cottage In the Woods is lovely and has great food. It's on the side of the malvern hills with a back gate leading out onto the a path up to the hill crest. There is a good spa nearby (also a hotel) here but I'd always rather stay at tCitW and visit the spa separately.

We stayed at Gidleigh park for my husband's 30th. OUT OF THIS WORLD! No spa but you can book spa room's/treatments or a room with a hot tub. We were so chilled out we really didn't need a spa. The ground's are simply stunning and I have never experienced better service anywhere! You really feel as if you are staying at a friend's house for the weekend.

Stayed at the witchery 10 years ago, I loved it then but don't think I would now as it's all a but fake.

We are staying at Bray cottages for my 30th in December - they look lovely.

Oh definitely Le Manoir Aux Quat Saison. I have been. Twice!!!

It is eye wateringly expensive but if money isn't an issue then go for it.

The first time we went was 15 years ago for DHs 40th. For reasons that now escape me there was some sort of discount and we managed a junior suite which was fab. We went again five years later for my 40th. Not a suite this time but we did stay for two nights.

I would love to go again one day if we could afford it.

Needless to say the food is to die for. But the other thing that also struck me is that the people who work there are all so nice. You might think somewhere that expensive would be a bit stuffy and grand but in fact they were all very friendly and welcoming.
