I was thinking of St Ives but its coming up quite expensive for the 6 weeks holiday and is about 5 hours from us (midlands) has anyone got any recommendations for pretty seaside places that are fairly near to things to do? I seem to remember going to somewhere called Lyme Regis as a child and seem to remember hav

Not completely on the seashore but not far off.... I'd recommend Dunster in Somerset. It's a very pretty village with loads of lovely family friendly places to visit nearby. A trip on the steam train along the coast is a must do!Grin

Sorry for late reply. By my directions you will see geography is not my strongpoint! It's down at the bottom, opposite isle of wight, by bournemouth! It is a small town, mudeford and highcliffe have the beaches.

We went to wells next the sea on the recommendation of mumsnet last year and it was perfect, i am considerign going again this year tough i do like to differ. The annual summer carnival was on when we were there which made it all the better. The beach is like something abroad and v wide and lovely colourful beach huts and you can get a little train to the beach and loads of nice places to eat and nearby for other norfolk attractions, it is lovely and in North norfolk so not to far for you. Whilst we were there last yr the temp hit 34 - fanbloodytastic!

Another vote for Northumberland. We spent a wonderful week in a cottage on Bamburgh beach last year. Loads to do round there and the scenery is stunning.

I agree about Lyme Regis, also Sheringham in Norfolk is nice.

I'd agree with Tenby - it always reminds me of St. Ives! Newquay (in Wales) is very pretty as is Aberdovey.

Brixham, Paignton Dartmouth, pretty much anywhere in South Devon.

Bournmouth, we went to Mudeford in Dorset for a day and it was lovely, too.
The gower?

North Norfolk is lovely. Wells is not such a good example of lovely norfolk.

Winkly · 28/03/2012 14:26

Saltburn in Teesside is lovely

We like swanage (we only live an hour away so we go there a lot). We also like Seaton in Devon but it is tiny, we like it as its never busy and often only elderly people about so its very quiet (you don't get lots of kids screaming), it is pepples though (not sand). West bay (somerset) is nice too.

Oops just noticed this thread started in February, the OP probably has her holiday booked now Blush

Another vote for South Devon.

Torbay is, quite simply, stunning.

Torquay, Paignton, Brixham - with Dartmouth and Newton Abbot close by - all offer loads to see and do for families.
