I was thinking of St Ives but its coming up quite expensive for the 6 weeks holiday and is about 5 hours from us (midlands) has anyone got any recommendations for pretty seaside places that are fairly near to things to do? I seem to remember going to somewhere called Lyme Regis as a child and seem to remember hav

Ventnor, Isle of Wight. Lovely.

doblet · 24/02/2012 17:47

Lyme Regis is lovely. Fossil hunting, mackerel fishing, a few nice shops and plenty of places to eat.

ditavonteesed · 24/02/2012 17:47

swanage. tis lovely.

WowOoo · 24/02/2012 17:49

I was going to suggest Lyme Regis. It still is very nice and has lots of sunshine in the summer.

Lyme regis is beautiful! Would thoroughly reccomend it. We've also liked perranporth and christchurch. Christchurch is my most favourite place in the world! :-)

Al0uise · 24/02/2012 18:09

Aldeburgh/Southwold/Thorpeness

mmmmmchocolate · 24/02/2012 18:11

I love the Isle Of Wight too but have only ever been there in the freezing cold!

Those of you that have recommended Lyme Regis is there enough there for a week? What is nearby that you would recommend?

Waiting- where is Christchurch? :)

Wells Next The Sea in Norfolk is lovely.

RatDesPaquerettes · 24/02/2012 18:14

Aberaeron is nice. Beautiful costal walks from there too. And the food at the Harbour Master is fantastic.

exexpat · 24/02/2012 18:18

Try looking at south Wales rather than Devon/Cornwall/Dorset?

Tenby would be perfect. And Aberaeron is lovely too (honey icecream - yum) but quite a drive.

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/02/2012 18:20

Sidmouth in Devon. Most wonderful place.

iloveminieggs · 24/02/2012 18:23

What about Nothumberland? Bamburgh beach is lovely so is Alnmouth, some nice little ports like craster and some lively cottages. Have a look at coastal retreats websiteSmile

We have spent 4 out of the last 6 family holidays in Lyme Regis, it's a fantastic place. Plenty to do either in the town or nearby, it's even got a lovely oldy worldy cinema for the odd wet afternoon. We were there last summer and DS's had a ball.

Beautiful sandy beach, tiny little arcade - penny slots - really cute, fossil hunting, rock pooling, great town museum, wonderful working watermill, lifeboat station, great shopping/browsing and that's just a bit of what we did in the town itself. Lovely cafes and restaurants, great artisan bakery, brilliant fish shops. Plenty to do outside of the town as well. Very near to Bridport and Axminster (Hugh Fearnley-W territory) and Dorchester.

We've had brilliant holidays there since DS's were small and would go back any year at the drop of a hat. We always self cater and there are some great properties about for rental.

I was going to say Tenby, Saundersfoot is a nice beach.

There's bugger all to do in Borth, lots of lovely sandGrin

culturemulcher · 24/02/2012 19:00

If you like St Ives you'll probably like Southwold.... but I think St Ives can't be beaten!

Popoozle · 24/02/2012 19:08

Brixham is my favourite place in the world. I'm in the midlands too - it's roughly a 3hr 45min drive.

hellhasnofury · 24/02/2012 19:14

Southwold is lovely.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/02/2012 19:17

Northumberland is wonderful, Berwick upon Tweed is great for history, we loved it there. Alnwick's lovely too, great castle.

St Ives I love too, but haven't been since the dses were born, used to go September when it was quieter.

South wold is lovely, as is Wells next the sea.

Conwy, North Wales is a lovely walled town.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be spending the next 2 days on google :)

I love Borth!

How about Aberdyfi? Very pretty, great beach too.

stargirl1701 · 24/02/2012 20:22

Elie in the East Neuk of Fife. Fab beach!

Abzs · 24/02/2012 20:29

I vote for Cemaes Bay on Anglesey and Dinas Dinlle in Gwynedd from my childhood. We went to Aberaeron too. North and mid Wales very do-able from the midlands.

As iloveminieggs said, also Northumberland and Borders coast. I thought Bamburgh was ace when I was 11 (we only had UK holidays until I was 16). Massive beach and sand martin burrows in the dunes.

I now live in NE Scotland so would suggest Pennan (Local Hero location), Gardenstown and Portsoy on the Moray Firth and Newburgh and Catterline on the east coast. If you skip the fishing/oil ports and golf courses the coast of Scotland between Edinburgh and Inverness has masses to choose from. 6 hrs from the midlands should get you to Fife at least. And it's dryer than the west...
