we've booked a holiday cottage for May, on the North Yorks Moors, and wondered if you clever MNers have good ideas of things to do. we have 2 dds who will be 4years, and 7mo by then. Also good places to eat??

How far away from York? there are tonnes of things to do in York. MY 4 year old loved the jorvik centre and the castle museum.
there is the railway museum and yorkshire wheel.
on the moors, you have gothlands if the leather is dry, lovely village to have a walk through and see the set of heartbeat, there is also a steam railway that runs through.
Whitby is lovely too, again if a dry day no harm in taking a bucket and spade and mkaing sand castles, mine alwasy loved that even in the rain if i'd let them.
If you go to Whitby book for the magpie cafe to avoid the queues, fabulous fish and chips.
Harrogate is lovely to visit as well.

Aworryingtrend · 21/02/2011 13:15

Hi, whereabouts exactly are you staying?

There are some lovely lovely places. The waterfalls at Aysgarth falls and High Force are well worth seeing. Fountains Abbey (national trust) is fab and loads of stuff to do for kids- they always have events on.

Chhesemaking near wensleydale and Im sure theres a chocolate making place near Leyburn.

Stacks of farmers markets- google farmers market plus 'name of toen you are staying near'

The black sheep Brewery at Masham is a good trourist attraction but the DDs may not appreciate the beer!

The Forbidden corner at Leybrun may be a bit scary for the younger ones- maybe start separate thread asking if anyone's been?

Would Beamish (nr Newcastle) be too far from wwhere yua re staying?

sunchild77 · 21/02/2011 13:15

Forbidden corner is excellent!!!
But you need to book in advance

Where abouts are you staying in NYM Charlotte? Its a big place :)

Aworryingtrend · 21/02/2011 13:16

x-post with BodyofEeyore!

allluckedout · 21/02/2011 13:16

are you staying in howarth charlottebrontesaurus? your namesakes museum/house is there. a few little tea shops that are pleasant as well. not much else from what i can remember though.

Aworryingtrend · 21/02/2011 13:18

Pickering is lovely for a walk along the stream and as a PP said there is a steam railway which goes through it- www.nymr.co.uk I think.

Cosmosis · 21/02/2011 13:18

Pickering is nice, there is a steam train there (I think it's the other end of the one mentioned above), there's also places like dalby forest, Flamingoland, Eden Camp museum, Castle Howard, Filey & other seaside placfes there's loads to do.

Aworryingtrend · 21/02/2011 13:20

Oh Eden camp!!!!!!!!!! i haven't been there since i was a kid myself! Is it still around?! ,runs to Google>

sunchild77 · 21/02/2011 13:20

Cross post with Aworrying agree all those places are good. Though Chocolate place in Leyburn was a bit rubbish the last time I was there (as was the "Teapot factory"

Hawes is the place for your Wensleydale :D YUM, Masham, Reeth, Richmond, all worth a trip too.

On the NY coast side, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, are lovely too.

Goathland,Helmsley, Pickering, (STEAM TRAINS and ice cream :) )

Cosmosis · 21/02/2011 13:23

It's a big area, can you let us know vaguely where you will be?

Taghain · 21/02/2011 14:49

The Dales are a long way from the NYM, so stick to the east of the Vale of York.
Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, all the ruined castles (Rievaulx) & abbeys around, walk along the old railway tracks above Rosedale, the steam trains between Pickering & Goathland are a must, RHB and Boggle Hole. Osmotherley is lovely.
As a child I loved just playing in the becks, damming them and seeing what lived under stones.

In May go up Farndale for the remains of the daffodils and eat at the Feversham Arms.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 21/02/2011 15:40

ooh, great! thanks everyone, i'll get googling all these suggestions. we'll be in Kirkbymoorside, near pickering.

Taghain · 21/02/2011 17:03

Take some rope & torches & go into the caves at Kirkdale, only about 5 miles from you, if that. The church is lovely, too. Then walk up the river valley - Sleightholmdale can be magical, especially once you've passed the few houses.

Oops, your little one is 7 months, not years. Perhaps the caves aren't for her, then.

Northernlurker · 21/02/2011 17:06

Pickering Castle and Rievaux are good for a run around. Go to the beach as well - kids love that whatever the weather. We always enjoy walking along near Sutton Bank too - great views and the tea shop at the visitor centre is nice.

BadRoly · 21/02/2011 17:11

Robin Hoods Bay used to be our weekend "holiday" destination as children :o Scarborough is a lovely traditional beachy place for kids - as is Bridlington but that is further away.

They are probably a bit young for Eden Camp imo, we waited until dd1 had "done" ww2 at school. Flamingoland - family fun for everyone - and you used to be able to use Tesco vouchers Wink

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 22/02/2011 19:09

thanks guys
eden camp looks right up DH's street, so the DC will have to endure it for a bit Grin

Thanks for this thread! We will be going to Whitby this year, so some useful info here.

I think you can get a bus to the Eden Camp from Whitby, so we'll maybe do that. If anybody else knows anything that is okay for teens and do-able by public transport, that would be great, if Charlotte doesn't mind a slight hijack?!

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 22/02/2011 19:20

hijack away Wink

Flamingo land has great rides for teens as well as a really good zoo.
Forbidden corner is great, I would have thought a four year old would be fine, as someone said, you do need to book in advance.
Eden Camp is fantastic.
We loved the Jorvik museum and the Castle Museum in York.
You can ride on the steam railway from Pickering to Grosmont, a beautiful ride and you can get on/off the train as many times as you want on the way.
Brimham rocks are good for climbing. Aysgarth falls are lovely as well.
I am very envious of you - I love N Yorkshire and it's a while since we've been. Envy

pjmama · 22/02/2011 19:55

Playdale Farm Park is about 40 minutes drive away near Scarborough. If you like children's farms this is one of the best I've been to.

pjmama · 22/02/2011 19:55

I liked the Sea Life Centre at Scarborough too.

littlebrownmouse · 22/02/2011 19:57

North York moors visitor centre is fabulous with great outdoor park, gardens, stuff for kids to do and the best coffee shop ever! I think it's at dandy.

StuckinTheMiddlewithYou · 22/02/2011 20:21

I recommend robins hoods bay and whitby, also try sandsend. Nice, safe inlet on the beach near the river where your four old can play safe from the wilds of a winter north sea.

Be careful of the seagulls on the coast though - they are huge and have been known to attack small children who are holding food.
