we've booked a holiday cottage for May, on the North Yorks Moors, and wondered if you clever MNers have good ideas of things to do. we have 2 dds who will be 4years, and 7mo by then. Also good places to eat??

I LOVE scarborough! tis a lovely day out! Fish and Chips on the front and a nice walk....

Second Goathland too but would reccomend going on your way to or from whitby, not enough to fill a full day, just a nice hour saying 'ooh look that scrips garage' and having a pint in the pub :-D

you've all inspired me! All this is on my doorstep and you just take it for granted :)

The castle museum in York is fabulous, but is easily a whole day, so be warned!

Flamborough Head is good for a nice walk along the cliffs as well, we saw air sea rescue helis practicing pick ups from the beach last time we were there.

I live on top of Sutton Bank near Thirsk. The world of James Herriot in Thirsk is very popular and has interactive stuff for the children.

Monk Park Farm just outside Thirsk is also good. You can feed the animals and there is a big tearoom.

little bump as we're getting ready to go...would especially like recommendations for pubs restaurants that will tolerate the small ones. And good farmers/food markets

Kirkbymoorside is near loads of great places...
Hutton-Le-Hole - build dams in lovely little beck in the middle of the village, on hot days people use the place as a beach, with picnics and stuff.
The forge valley between pickering and Scarborough - lovely walks by river, rope swings, etc.
Pickering castle, Helmsley Castle, the Steam railway.
Village of Thornton Le Dale for fish and chips and picture postcard-ness generally.
York about 40 minutes away btw
Pub at Cropton brews own beer
Dalby Forest is lovely.
