Scottish hotels!

My 40th is just around the corner.

We have a child free weekend so looking for a hotel for the night. My wish list:

Fantastic food and wine
Spa for treatments/pool/sauna etc
Great breakfast
Not in a city

We've done Gleneagles, Cameron House and Rufflets Hotel in St Andrews.

Do you have any recommendations for me?

We've lived in Edinburgh and Glasgow hence the reason we're not keen to spend the night in a hotel there but happy to be advised otherwise!

Thanks.

Stobo
Monachyle Mhor (not sure if they've got spa but its fab)

gregssausageroll · 02/01/2011 22:17

Don't like Stobo. Health Farm with lots of women in towels being shoved from treatment to treatment! Thank you though. Will have a look at the Mhor.

There's a lovely hotel with spa on Arran but can't remember what it's called right now. I'll see if I can find it...

The Marcliffe at Pitfodels, near Aberdeen.

We visited there for a wedding and the food was delicious.
It is not in the countryside, more the suburbs, but an easy drive from Royal Deeside which is beautiful.
Think it has a spa too.

Milngavie · 02/01/2011 22:21

It's Auchrannie Smile

Oooh waswondering I am now wondering if I was at your wedding? Grin

The Bunchrew House Hotel near Inverness is really lovely. Had a fantastic weekend there several years ago.

I've enjoyed a couple of breaks at the Macdonald Forest Hills hotel, just outside Aberfoyle.

Turnberry? Don't know anyone that's been, but sounds like you like 5* places!!

Carrotsandcelery · 03/01/2011 13:52

My SIL and her friends used to regularly spend the day at Turnberry. They would drive there in the morning, spend the day at the spa and have a fancy meal before heading home again. They loved it. I think they got deals for the spa and meal too so it might be worth a look.
Remembering that has reminded me of St Andrew's Bay hotel - I think it is now called the Fairmont or Fairmount, just outside St Andrews. We have stayed there a few times and it is lovely. The spa is great but really expensive - luckily they had to change the time of my treatment so I got it for half price, otherwise I would have felt sick to spend that on a massage. Everyone's budget is different though.
It has several restaurants of varying degrees of elegance so you have a choice.
The setting is beautiful, right on the coast overlooking the sea.

Crieff Hydro was good.

mrspercival · 03/01/2011 17:46

Crieff Hydro great for families ie stuffed with kids; been there, its fun but I definitely choose somewhere less child oriented for a romantic trip

Carrotsandcelery · 03/01/2011 20:45

I love Crieff when we have the dcs with us but would not want to go there for a romantic retreat either. The main hotel is "tired" too and needs modernisation tbh. Not an issue when you are running around with the dcs but not the luxury of the other places mentioned. Fantastic for a family holiday though.

neversaydie · 03/01/2011 22:20

How about the Isle of Eriska?

vintageteacups · 03/01/2011 22:25

this has lovely grounds/rooms/food/nice town

My sister got married here and they return every year as they love it so much.

strawberrie · 04/01/2011 20:06

We've been to Auchrannie a few times and loved it but it's not in Cameron House etc league.

If you don't mind doing St. Andrews again, the Fairmont (former St Andrews Bay) is lovely, or what about Mar Hall?

mrspercival · 04/01/2011 20:11

Mar Hall wld be gd. Also take a look at Pete Irvine's book - Scotland the Best, that'll have plenty of good ideas too.

They were all this century Waswondering - I have been to several there. Do you live in the area?

We had a phase of having Christmas dinners in the conservatory for a while (courtesy of my Dad - we couldn't afford it) but now there are too many dcs in our combined family for it to be fun.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 04/01/2011 21:36

The Mhor, deffo - no spa, but just fabulous - you will not miss a pool, honestly!
