Finding tutors who are accountable to results?

Jwrkt66 · 25/10/2021 17:45

Am trying to find a 11+ tutor for my younger yr 5 DD to focus on English comprehension and Maths. I went through 3 tutors (2 were from agencies/websites recommended on other threads here) for my elder DS 2 yrs ago but stopped because although I could see improved knowledge, ISEB scores were not improving much. I concluded its hard to hold tutors accountable to results. But my DD really needs tutoring. Does anyone have recommendations?.

Hmmmm I'm not sure you can hold someone accountable for another results Private tutoring or not.

SapereAude · 25/10/2021 17:50

I doubt you'll get very far if that's your expectation.
Do your daughter's teachers say she needs tutoring?
I tutor as a sideline, but the child and the family are given MY expectations of what I expect the student to do, in terms of workload etc, rather than the other way round.
I prepare exam students and while I can guarantee that I will give them every tool and technique, as well as lots of exam training, and will tell them honestly what I think they are capable of getting, I'd refuse to take on a "get my child through this exam or else" family.

There are many aspects to learning, student motivation, student ability and good quality teaching among many others. A tutor is only responsible for 1 of those aspects. Given that it is beyond the control of a tutor to control the student factors I think any tutor willing to guarantee results is naïve.

GrainOfSalt · 25/10/2021 18:30

You can lead a horse to water... I have tutored lots of students over the years and have very good results overall but I can't guarantee an individual student will engage/ be successful. As has been said above I can't give a guarantee because I can't control all the variables.

AosSi · 25/10/2021 18:34

Can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I'd be surprised if you found any tutor willing to make a guarantee about results (and would seriously question their tutoring if they did).

Terminallysleepdeprived · 25/10/2021 18:34

Wow...just wow.

You cannot hold the tutor accountable for your child's ability/inability to pass a test. The tutor is there to help your child consolidate/expand their knowledge. At your own admission their knowledge has improved.

Have you considered that maybe your child is just no good at tests and the associated pressures?

I am an intelligent person, I have a good degree but was shit at exams and deliberately chose a university that focused more on coursework and continuous assessment than exams.

😂😂😂

SwayingInTime · 25/10/2021 18:38

Where are you based?

immersivereader · 25/10/2021 18:39

Where is she based?

Lala land

Africa2go · 25/10/2021 18:40

As above. You just can't do that as a parent. No tutor is "accountable" for your DDs results.

LettertoHermoine · 25/10/2021 18:42

This is absolutely NUTS!

CheltenhamLady · 25/10/2021 18:43

Really Op? How is it possible to do that?

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 25/10/2021 18:46

The tutors around your way have probably put a memo around telling all other tutors to not answer calls/emails from you

LouMoo13 · 25/10/2021 18:47

If they need this much tutoring maybe grammar school isn't for them???

iklboo · 25/10/2021 18:48

Accountable? Yeah, right. Not the tutor's fault if your child fails the exams, no more than it would be a teacher's.

Here's a bridge. Get over yourself.

I sometimes tutor A-Level and IB sciences. I’d never guarantee results, it’s out of my control. It’s an unreasonable request and hence you won’t find anyone.

PurpleDaisies · 25/10/2021 18:49

You are one of those clients.

I’d avoid you like the plague.

MrsAvocet · 25/10/2021 18:50

What do you mean "accountable" OP?
Someone who is going to guarantee success? Someone who is going to give you your money back if they fail?
I can't see anyone agreeing to a refund as there are so many variables involved in passing any exam.
And if anyone guaranteed success I would run a mile, as they are clearly a liar, deluded or both.

Jwrkt66 · 26/10/2021 10:51

Thank you to you all for your comments. Clearly I touched a nerve! I was merely making the observation that the tutors I used in the past were expensive and didn't have any accountability. It looks like many of you agree for your own reasons. In any case, I got a message about a tutor service that DOES offer a guarantee and has a track record (in particular St Paul's, City of London). If any parents reading are interested, am happy to share

It's extremely difficult to get into St. Paul's Girls' School. The girls who get in are bright and motivated. What the tutor progbably means is that he/ she has tutored a girl who got a place. That's a very far cry from saying they can guarantee a SPGS place.
WholeClassKeptIn · 26/10/2021 10:57

Wow you aren't listening are you?!

WholeClassKeptIn · 26/10/2021 10:57

You basically just want to buy a place. It doesnt (entirely) work like that.

Your poor child.

WholeClassKeptIn · 26/10/2021 10:58

Does your child know they aren't a failure if they don't pass? And they they will suceed wherever they go etc.

What they guarantee your dim child will get a place at St Paul's ? I doubt that very much
OneRingToRuleThemAll · 26/10/2021 10:59

You never know what happens on the day. My daughter failed her 11+ this year. Everyone involved in her education was surprised, but on the day she just crumbled under the pressure.
