People keep giving me moth orchids and I wish they wouldn’t

What do I do with the bloody things? It seems mean to put them in the green bin and nobody else wants to adopt them.
House is starting to feel like a suburban day spa…

Watching with interest 😆 similar issue here!

NormasArse · 25/10/2026 15:26

I don’t like them either!

DontLiveByTheClouds · 25/10/2026 15:54

How can you not like such a beautiful flower? Send them to me. I'll happily take them.

canklesmctacotits · 25/10/2026 16:03

Send them to me, I have a canny ability to kill them off just by looking at them…

PopcornKitten · 26/10/2026 10:36

Maybe they’re the marmite of plants as I love them too.

Wistfultearia · 26/10/2026 10:38

They are pretty, but oddly difficult to fit into a room.
IME they never get killed off, they may look completely dead but give them a bit of water and they will be back. I like that about them.

Autumnbeaches · 26/10/2026 10:39

Just view them as cut flowers and chuck them in green bin!

mysoddenbananabread · 26/10/2026 10:40

I hate orchids. The roots bit makes me feel physically sick 🤢

NotNowMadam · 26/10/2026 10:41

This is such a niche problem to have. I don't think I've ever been given a moth orchid?! Who is giving them to you? How often? I'm intrigued...

I know!
I can't keep orchids alive, so I just have plant envy.
Do any of your friends or family want them? Or care homes/hospices/anywhere with a waiting room that needs a bit of something?

muddyford · 26/10/2026 10:55

I loathe these huge orchids. I think they're slightly creepy. But the wild ones are delicate and beautiful!

Nofeckingway · 26/10/2026 11:01

I quite like them . Fairly low maintenance too. I just regularly spray them with a light mist of water .

hotcrossbrum · 26/10/2026 11:08

the ones that have been dyed garish colours and tied to sticks make me feel sad. I buy them from Tesco when they’re half dead, cut the flower spikes off, and let them regrow how they want. Bathrooms are a good place for them - they like a bit of humidity.

DPotter · 26/10/2026 11:39

The trouble is once people have seen you receive certain things as gifts, they assume you like that particular thing and therefore give you more. And so it cycles through.

Definitely throw them away when they stop flowering and drop hints about things you do like to receive as gifts

It is isn’t it? I moved house and started a new job a year ago and they began their slow march to the house, on their exposed rooty feet - brought for housewarming and thank yous and birthdays. I’m mercifully down to three now which is three too many.

All of them spend most of the time as a bare stem with creepy Jurassic roots heaving over the side of the pot and maybe two fleshy leaves. Can I just throw them away? It feels wrong 🙈

Exactly this! I need to hide them, together in some kind of botanical orphanage out of sight.
Same thing happened with cat merch. We have two Cheshire Cat cats with fudgy cheeks and a wide smile and pussy willow paws.
And my love of these atrociously-behaved furry fuckers has elicited gifts of cat tea towels, cat mugs, cat T shirt, cat earrings, a cat spoon, it is unrelenting. I love cats. I do not love cat merch. If anything this is a problem bigger than the moth orchids.

I used to have that issue with people giving me candles and candle holders.

Throw the orchids in the green bin. They can be recycled. If any of the present givers ask how you got on just shrug, say you are hopeless with house plants and it died.

Nobody wants this. It might tip someone in a hospital over the edge

Tell everyone you are allergic.
I hate flowers or plants indoors and this is how I stopped it.

mondaytosunday · 26/10/2026 17:40

Gosh. Who’s giving them to you? Have you inadvertently gotten a reputation fog liking them? I mean I can’t remember the last time anyone gave me a plant of any description!
Put them outside your door on your wall whatever with a sign ‘free’. That’s what people do on my street. I got a couple nice plants that are doing well that way.

SleepingisanArt · 26/10/2026 17:42

Throw them in your garden bin and tell people the cats ate them and you can't believe how spectacular cat vomit is..... That should stop anyone who you tell buying you more 😂😂

I love them like that. I look after them and wait for the next stems and blooms.
maybe pop them on your local free cycle/Facebook page and see if anyone wants them.

justasking111 · 26/10/2026 17:48

I ended up with three. Put them in the bathroom together. They loved it there. The humidity from the shower I suppose. They do look better grouped.

Yes, you can throw them away - plant in the garden waste bin, pot in the plastics recycling (if possible).
