I’m Stressed DH ate from a display jar at nandos

I know it’s stupid. Went to Nando’s. DH ordered regular chips instead of peri ones - he gets up and comes back with a massive jar of what looks like peri seasoning and proceeds to add it and eat chips. End of the meal I realise it’s odd the jar has no markings on it , ask him where it came from and it was from the top shelf where all the display stuff is! Nando’s worker comes over and confirms it’s not for use and gives him new chips but a bit late by then as he’s eaten loads of it. Nando’s worker couldn’t confirm what was in the jar but sort of shrugs and says it’s probably just really old seasoning ? DH said it did taste ‘off’ but he was hungry.
DH thinks it’s funny and we leave but I have health anxiety and I’m now worried ! Should I have at least pushed for them to check what was in the display jar ?!? Teen daughter ate a couple of the chips too but isn’t worried - I am ! Please be gentle 😂

Spices don’t go off. They just lose flavour. No worries.

What do you think will happen? How does it impact you?

addictedtotheflats · Yesterday 15:18

he will be fine. What exactly are you worried it will be? Arsenic?

HScully · Yesterday 15:20

He will be fine, it just wont be very flavoursome

I eat spices that are years old in my cupboard

Ok - I do struggle to gauge what it an actual worry and when I’m catastrophising. I guess the worry is no one could tell me for definite what was in the jar ?

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger - he’ll probably have the constitution of an ox after eating that…. If he lives. 😁

Absobeautely · Yesterday 15:24

I don't imagine the staff were trained on the ingredients of decorative items.

Your husband wasn't concerned, so don't give it a moments thought

It could only be either spice or some kind of powder that looks like spice. The former is much more likely. Nandos would not have anything poisonous in their restaurants.

Edictfromno10 · Yesterday 15:28

Sorry I don't want to be insensitive but that really made me laugh, I can imagine the staff - 'remember when that bloke came in who used the window display prop to season his chips...'

DailyEnergyCrisis · Yesterday 15:28

They’re not going to have nutritional and allergy info for displays. Just remind your husband to eat what he’s served rather than the decorative items and move on with your life.

Trallers · Yesterday 15:29

It's going to have been food in the jar, not something else. Possibly gone off but in the stale sense rather than the food poisoning sense. He'll be grand, try not to think about it.

purplecorkheart · Yesterday 15:30

Odds are he ate old spice that probably tasted of dust. They are not going to have anything dangerous in display in case someone aka your dh decides to eat it.

As I said he probably ate old spices that have lost their flavour.

Please get help for your health anxiety, it is exhausting being with someone with health anxiety even if we don't say it. Also tell your dh to avoid the top shelf in restaurant. If it is hard to reach it is unlikely for customers.

Thanks all - it has been helpful ! (And yes probably gave staff a good laugh on a rainy day! 🫣)

Perhaps your husband will learn from this and next time ask the waitress instead of helping himself.

Springtimeinsunshine · Yesterday 15:32

You shouldn't be the one stressed OP, if anyone is it should be the person who ate the decorative display. And he isn't. However I would highly recommend you get the best life insurance on him that you can 😬

SereneFinch · Yesterday 15:33

No restaurant would have a dangerous substance in a public area.

OneTicklishPoster · Yesterday 15:33

Thing is, with health anxiety, we can all reassure you, but you'll just move on to the next thing to worry about.
Your treatment plan should be looking at reducing reassurance -seeking behaviours. What advice have you had for distraction/tolerating uncertainty? Have you already tried CBT.
It's good that you mentioned it in your post - positive step!

Hyroplate · Yesterday 15:34

TBH even if it was toxic in some way, which it almost certainly wasn't, the amount he'll have eaten sprinkled on a few chips won't be enough to harm him. If he's not ill, he's fine.

Have you ever eaten at Nando's? 😂

pilates · Yesterday 15:38

Yes loads

😁Its seasoning so chances are the worst that'll happen is that he spends some time in the loo with a dodgy tum!

CelticSilver · Yesterday 15:58

Oh, I thought you were going to say he'd get in trouble for stealing!

Cherrytree86 · Yesterday 16:08

nandos is proper shit, last time I went I thought the cutlery looked really unclean
