Terrifying car ride 30 minutes to go

Currently in a car driving along a freeway in the dark in Nevada. My DHs Granddad is driving and it is terrifying. We're swerving all over the place.

This is making me sweat. This is my second time meeting them and I can't say anything without causing massive offense.

Just hoping we make it there in one piece.

how awful, this happened to me once and it is so difficult - the rel fear of being in an accident against the reality of the upset you would cause if you refused to carry on. Is he under the influence of anything or just a very bad driver?

Can your DH offer to drive instead? Avoid offence and keep you safe?

Yes, it's awful!! I feel like I'm failing as a parent because my two babies are in the car too. I just can't bring myself to say anything.

We flew into las vegas for a family reunion and they picked us up. I had no idea he was such a bad driver. Definitely not under the influence. I think it's just age. Obviously can't say for sure, maybe he's always driven like this.

He's struggling to stay in his lane and we're going so fast. So many big lorries on the road too.

I'm texting my DH and he says anything resembling a close call and he'll insist on driving. Not very reassuring. It only takes one close call.

He's struggling with it too because he's not close to his grandparents and doesn't really know them well either.

Can you talk to or text your DH if you can’t say anything? How long to go now? I usually try to reassure myself that clearly they haven’t crashed yet so maybe it will be ok. Do you want me to distract you or keep suggesting solutions? You’re nearly half way through it now!

I can't look 😬😓

Thank you! I was just posting for the distraction. 10-15 minutes to go!

Where are you going to in the car? Hopefully once you get there you can avoid ever getting in a car with him behind the wheel again!

SunnyFawn · Yesterday 03:57

you’re still ok! Hooray! Only about ten minutes to go now, you are 2/3 through. Are ypu based in the US or just visiting to see relatives?

Back to their house. And then we're driving to a retreat for the family reunion tomorrow. Thankfully travelling separately!

Never ever ever getting in a car with his Granddad again

We just moved to Texas last month! My DH is American and I'm British. This is my first time meeting most of his family and also introducing them to our toddler and baby.

Thank you for the distraction!

Just a little longer

Ok it’s not far now. I hate situations like this. I once got a tattoo I didn’t like on my ankle because I didn’t want to upset the artist by saying it was a bit big and in the wrong place 🫣😂

Oh no! That is exactly the kind of thing I would do. I'm a terrible people pleaser

And wow! Moving to the states is a big change! Especially with little ones. Hope it is going well. Family retreat sounds either wonderful or a bit hellosh , depending on the family😬😂

Yes, back in the 90’s. £20 for the tattoo, over £600 to have it removed over the next five years. Also a people pleaser! You still alive?

SunnyFawn · Yesterday 04:08

I’m really hoping you have got there safely and not been in an accident. I hope the rest of the visit is peacefully uneventful!

ThatLoudCat · Yesterday 04:24

I am alive! We made it! Thank you so much!

Phew! Thanks for letting us know!

Take care of yourselves out there! 🤗

A tiny part of me wondered if you were just going to leave us hanging and never post again- that would have been a 10/10 wind up.

Glad you all got there safely

I had an uber driver that had horrendous BO but there was no way to report it, I tried.

I had an uber driver who swerved a lot and hit the curb a couple of times. I made him pull over and got out. Rated him zero (may have been 1 star, can't remember what the lowest you could give was). Tagged safety as a reason and explained in the comments box. Then ordered another Uber to pick me up from there. They won't rematch you with anyone you rate 3 stars or less so I knew I'd get someone else. Uber got in touch (I think email, may have been text) to apologise and ask more questions and waived the first vehicle's fee. I assume they didn't ditch the driver though, given their rep.

So sorry, OP. It's terrifying to be in that situation. Glad you got there in one piece. Hope you or DH get to drive in the morning.

LakieLady · Yesterday 08:03

That must have been horrific, OP. Glad you got there in one piece.

I have a friend who's an appalling driver, and she always wanted us to go places in her car. Thankfully, she's had to give up her car because she couldn't afford to run it any longer. She keeps suggesting that I put her on my insurance so we can share the driving when we go places. So far, I've managed to make excuses not to do that.
