Terrifying car ride 30 minutes to go

Currently in a car driving along a freeway in the dark in Nevada. My DHs Granddad is driving and it is terrifying. We're swerving all over the place.

This is making me sweat. This is my second time meeting them and I can't say anything without causing massive offense.

Just hoping we make it there in one piece.

Can you talk to or text your DH if you can’t say anything? How long to go now? I usually try to reassure myself that clearly they haven’t crashed yet so maybe it will be ok. Do you want me to distract you or keep suggesting solutions? You’re nearly half way through it now!

SunnyFawn this was very kind of you.

OP tf all is well!

OMG I am glad you and your babies made it. If you need an excuse not to get in the car with grandpa again, I would say that you got travel sick with him but were too polite to say at the time. He was making the drive a bit “bendy”.

Wotsupmog · Yesterday 09:20

Great! But don't let him drive you again even if offence is taken. Have a lovely visit.

Oh op I'd have been sick. I hate being a passenger. Hate it. You're at the mercy of someone elses driving skills. I don't even like being a passenger in my husbands car.
Hope you made it there safely x

So,he is a great grandad. How old is he? Don’t get in the car with him again.

That must have been horrific, OP. Glad you got there in one piece.

I have a friend who's an appalling driver, and she always wanted us to go places in her car. Thankfully, she's had to give up her car because she couldn't afford to run it any longer. She keeps suggesting that I put her on my insurance so we can share the driving when we go places. So far, I've managed to make excuses not to do that.

Stop lying to her! Be totally bluntly honest that she’s a shit driver and you will never let her drive your car!!!

If this post is real then i thonk you should say you're desperate to go to the bathroom, get him to pull ove. then get out and insist your husband drive. Whats worse. Insulting someone or ending up with no legs.

Thanks everyone! Very relieved we made it in one piece and could get the kids tucked up safely in bed. Although up with the baby now (it's 3am.)

Absolutely will not be getting in a car with him again. No need to worry about that!

He's late 70s so not very elderly.

There’s nothing worse than getting in a car and slowly realising that you’re trapped on a motorway with a maniac at the wheel.

I’ve had to ask several taxi drivers to slow down in the past due to them driving inches from the back of the car in front while talking on their phone. Terrifying. I don’t know who is passing these drivers but they appear to have no regard for safety.

JustSetFireToIt · Yesterday 11:31

Cross post. Glad you’re OK OP.

I’m very glad you arrived safely OP. How scary for you, especially with your young children in the car.

My grandad was an awful driver. Probably because he learned to drive in the army in WW2 and never took a formal driving test. He tailgated, never indicated and would approach too fast then slam on his brakes at roundabouts and junctions instead of slowing down and looking at what was coming.

We finally managed to persuade him to give up his licence at the age of 84 when he rolled his car and almost killed himself and my nan. Fortunately nobody else was involved.

This must be a first for MN. How refreshing!

Yes, @SunnyFawn was brilliant ❤️

Not that you are going to go with him again, but one idea for anyone in this situation would be to ask him to pull over as you feel travel sick … especially after a flight, then ask them to slow down the rest of the way to prevent you feeling sick again!

SunnyFawn · Yesterday 15:24

Aww thanks everyone, I am very relieved @ThatLoudCat and her family got there in one piece - in fact I couldn’t get back to sleep till I knew they had 😂 .

Hope the rest of the trip is fabulous, and that the baby lets you get some sleep soon 🥰

Ugh I once had this in a private transfer from a ski resort back to airport down windy airport roads at 60ph+ tailgating other cars. Terrified, and horribly travel sick. Tried telling him I was going to be sick if he carried on but it just made him drive faster. Did get my money back but still. Can’t stand being a passenger in cars!

Make some excuse to never get in car with them again. How awful.

Wow, that's awful! He was just getting a kick out of scaring you??

I’d have to say something. Why causing offence trump your safety?
