We do this all the time, it is often dry before we go to work when the weather is warm and dry

Are your neighbour's cats doing headstands or something? Surely you have your washing raised up high enough that it's well out of squirting range?

😆

WinterFrogs · 07/07/2026 11:46

I do it. If it makes me odd my neighbours are odd too!

What on earth do you think would happen to your washing overnight? These posts baffle me.
Also the cringeworthy “darked on”and “spider willies” was never funny,

We get foxes in the garden. I worry they will take my knickers on a tour of the
neighbourhood. And they are not small lacy ones 😂

dancingdeidre · 07/07/2026 11:46

Good idea. Odd as in usual doesn't mean 'wrong'.

Nothing is going to happen, but affter reading some threads on here it sounded like i was odd for doing it.
And the darked on crap ive never heard of it until tonight, after reading an old thread.
I still dont get it.

I have done it for years, all year round.

oustedbymymate · 07/07/2026 11:53

I do much to my mother horror #embracespiderwillies

OutOfApricots · 07/07/2026 11:54

It is a good idea, especially with dark clothes which will otherwise get bleached by the sun. At this time of year it is plenty warm enough to get things dry at night.

ExplodingSmittens · 07/07/2026 11:56

One load went out last night and is now ironed and put away. I do it all of the time when the weather is warm enough.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 07/07/2026 12:04

If all the answers were ‘yes it’s very odd’ would you stop doing it? If so, why?

TabbyM · 07/07/2026 12:05

If its your own lines on you go but in a shared drying space no, don't hog the lines - had a neighbour that did this all the time, would leave stuff out for days if it rained and never take it in, so selfish!

bonkersbongo · 07/07/2026 12:26

My joints are very stiff of a morning so I peg mine out the night before while it’s easier for me. I’m off to google spider willies. If I end up on a dodgey site it’s all your fault op lol

RudolphTheReindeer · 07/07/2026 13:13

No I do this a lot in summer. Hang out overnight and it's dry by morning,

ToadRage · 07/07/2026 13:24

I noticed my neighbour doing this and thought is was odd but I have since done it myself. When needing washing to dry as leaving early on holiday the following morning. It was ideal cos clothes went straight from the line into the suitcase. However I tend to wash overnight so it goes out first thing, if hot enough it's dry before lunchtime.

GotALionInMyPocket · 07/07/2026 13:25

Nope.

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 07/07/2026 13:27

It’s something I have learned from Mumsnet. It’s efficient, especially during spells of dry weather like now.

purplecorkheart · 07/07/2026 13:30

I always do it. Put a wash on after work and put it out that night. If I left it till morning I would probably forget about it in the machine.

FoxandDuck · 07/07/2026 13:30

I do it as it’s cooler in the evenings and first thing so it’s just less effort to hang it out & then pick it in again at those times. I’m really not good in the heat though!

Bellpick · 07/07/2026 13:30

I always hang washing out before bedtime if the weather is warm .

HRHCurmudgeon · 07/07/2026 13:39

I set my timer to have the load finished for 5am. I get up then to go to the gym - hang it out and it’s practically dry by the time I get home a couple of hours later. I love this weather!

LilyBunch25 · 07/07/2026 13:45

Not at all- it'll dry and thats the aim 😊

thejelliclecats · 07/07/2026 13:46

I do it all the time, it’s dry when I get up at 7am.

KarmenPQZ · 07/07/2026 13:47

Sorry but I think the darked on is/was hilarious!

my only issue would be the longer it’s out the more likely it is to be bird pooed on from height. Hasn’t happened to my washing yet despite been left out longer than needed very regularly but occasionally we get a flock of something over and the patio gets a smattering. This is just a game of probability I guess

When I was young - a long, long, time ago - it was a social crime to leave washing out over night on the council estate we lived on. " She leaves her washing out" was a damning comment to make about someone.
I think those days are thankfully long gone and if it's helpful or convenient to have washing out over night then there is no reason not to do it.

My granny always used to say this. It was akin to killing kittens.

I have been hanging washing out both day and night for over 30 years and can honestly say I have never had a bird poo on it. This is a garden that has a large amount of birds of all sizes from sparrows to gulls.
