My nephews christening is coming up soon. Do you think this is ok/nice?

if so, what shoes? I need to buy a new pair either way as don’t often wear heels - black? Or should I go for something bright? Orange, red maybe? Won’t be worrying about a bag as nappy bag seems to be my
only accessory nowadays 😂

TIA.

thinking of buying this from Next - PixieGirl Petite White Polka Dot Crinkle Maxi Dress www.next.co.uk/style/SV114023/Y68694 Next Polka Dot Dress

Not if you’re not a Christian!

In which case don't go to a service where the congregation supports the child's introduction to christianity, and certainly don't use it as an excuse to frock up to the nines. It's a very sincere service.

I’ve been to about 20 family christenings because most of family are catholic. I’m not but I go and celebrate the occasion with them all. Ditto, church weddings. Are you honestly saying that’s wrong?

Im finding today on here that people will moan and find fault in literally anything.

Most people aren’t taking the Christianity bit seriously though. They’re guests at an event, the religious bit is probably of no interest to most.

Why bother then?

Oh ffs 🤣🤣

I think I’ve had enough MN today. People are beyond petty and argumentative.

I’ve been to multiple christenings. It’s not my cup of tea, I’m not really religious. But they mean a lot to the parents and I am always flattered to be asked to go. So I go, I don’t pray but just bow my head when the prayers are going on, and I enjoy dressing up because it’s an excuse to get a nice dress out!

Frazzledinmyforties · 04/07/2026 17:25

I love the dress and think it’s perfect for a christening. In my denomination of Christian church, people wear clothes similar to those for a wedding. I love the idea of bright shoes with it too.

I’m going to go against the grain and say that although it’s a lovely dress, if it’s a CofE Christening, people tend to just wear ordinary ‘nice’ clothes, rather than day at the races clothes. It’s not like a wedding, it’s a serious sacramental service to welcome a child into the Christian church. People who dress up in frock and heels always look like a bit like they’re at the wrong event or aren’t taking the Christian bit seriously.

I wouldn't think people dressing up for a Christening weren't taking the faith seriously. If anything, it's a sign of respect.

Why bother then?

To support friends or family as they celebrate their child? Honestly!

Gorgeous dress, bright shoes and bag are a must.
@TheyGrewUp need? not everyone wants bloody ballet flats, despite MN opinions most dresses look better with heels.

They do look better with heels. Ballet flats sometimes give that look of catalogues with all those orthotic support stylings, which is fine if that's what you are wanting, but if you are wanting glam, heels are the way.

I'm also not convinced by trainers with a dress. It screams perimenopause. Sorry, I know that is ageist ... but it's hot and the honesty is flowing.

Toyesrus · 04/07/2026 23:01

Since this is Mumsnet, I'm surprised no-one has suggested you can't wear white in case people mistake you for the bride baby.
It's perfect for a christening, @worrier66556 . You could also get away with something less dressy but you can absolutely wear this dress- it's charming.

bridgetreilly · 04/07/2026 23:58

Dressing up levels depend almost entirely on the nature of the party afterwards.

2chocolateoranges · 05/07/2026 09:49

Love polka dots and this dress is lovely, I’m going against the grain and would wear black strappy heels a black bag.

ForDreamyMintHare · 05/07/2026 10:17

I'd wear a smart pair of clean coloured trainers with that

Someone up thread did say you shouldn’t upstage the mum which is pretty bonkers 🤣
