Is this ok for a christening?

My nephews christening is coming up soon. Do you think this is ok/nice?

if so, what shoes? I need to buy a new pair either way as don’t often wear heels - black? Or should I go for something bright? Orange, red maybe? Won’t be worrying about a bag as nappy bag seems to be my
only accessory nowadays 😂

TIA.

thinking of buying this from Next - PixieGirl Petite White Polka Dot Crinkle Maxi Dress www.next.co.uk/style/SV114023/Y68694 Next Polka Dot Dress

I think that is a perfectly suitable dress for going to a church celebration. I love a polka dot! The idea of a pop of colour with bright shoes is a good one.

GotALionInMyPocket · 03/07/2026 17:14

It’s fine.

I think it's a beautiful dress, bright pink shoes?

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 03/07/2026 19:03

I really dislike polka dots but that dress is gorgeous!

Mosaic123 · 03/07/2026 19:11

Lovely fun dress. Neon bright yellow shoes?

Mumofsmallies · 03/07/2026 21:40

Gorgeous!

Plump82 · 03/07/2026 21:47

I love it! I've had a couple of Pixi Girl dresses and they're quite neat made so make sure you try on in plenty of time!
I think orange or pink would look fab!

worrier66556 · 03/07/2026 21:56

Oh thank you everyone, that’s reassured me! I’ll look for something nice and bright then!

I think it's perfect for a christening, it's lovely.

TheyGrewUp · 04/07/2026 08:19

I'd probably wear cream shoes. Missing the point of the thread, but why do you need to wear heels to a christening?

I think OP is well aware she doesn’t have to, but it’s her preference to do so.

Lovely dress OP and totally fine for a christening. And I agree with PP, some colourful shoes will be a lot of fun.
Love a polka dot dress. I’m wearing a cream one today with red dots. It brings me so much joy!

Don't you know that in Mumsnet Land no-one and I mean NO-ONE ever wears heels any more. Ever. So strange that there are so many heeled shoes in the shops as Mumsnet tells us constantly theyre not worn anymore, by anyone. Oh and also no-one EVER dresses up in London 🤣

I love the idea of a neon shoe OP. Id probably go for pink or green. And yes, definitely heels with that dress. Dress is perfect for a christening.

HortiGal · 04/07/2026 09:07

Gorgeous dress, bright shoes and bag are a must.
@TheyGrewUp need? not everyone wants bloody ballet flats, despite MN opinions most dresses look better with heels.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 04/07/2026 09:39

Ideal for a christening.

worrier66556 · 04/07/2026 09:45

Thanks all. I know heels aren’t a must, and I’m sure at the after party I’ll be putting flat sandals on 😂 but it feels dressier to add heels with a dress like that and as I’m not very tall either I personally think I need a little height with a dress long like this one

I’m going to go against the grain and say that although it’s a lovely dress, if it’s a CofE Christening, people tend to just wear ordinary ‘nice’ clothes, rather than day at the races clothes. It’s not like a wedding, it’s a serious sacramental service to welcome a child into the Christian church. People who dress up in frock and heels always look like a bit like they’re at the wrong event or aren’t taking the Christian bit seriously.

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 04/07/2026 10:37

Most people aren’t taking the Christianity bit seriously though. They’re guests at an event, the religious bit is probably of no interest to most.

That's a very sad stance.

Not if you’re not a Christian!

I attend church every week and there is a wide variety of what people where to a Christening. But literally no one is going to be offended by dressing up for a Christening. It’s a special day and lovely for people to celebrate that. The only no-no is to outshine the mummy. So assuming that this lady’s sister/sister-in-law is also dressing up then it’s totally fine. Lovely dress.

7238SM · 04/07/2026 10:48

Pretty dress, but personally a bit too flamboyant for a Christening.
Note that its 95% polyester so if its a hot day, you might be a sweaty mess. (I certainly would be) Also, reviews mention it being see through, so ensure your underwear is neutral/skin toned and not visible 😬
